Re: ECU vs block

I want to get in touch with the guy who did the conversion to discuss; hopefully he can shed some light on it if he remembers or kept records but we don’t speak each other’s language so it needs to be when I have a bilingual person handy.?
I expect to cross paths in June but meanwhile, how different might a 2.5 and a 2.0 ECU be?
Like would it be “works not too bad, let’s roll with it” or more like “not a chance, this ECU must be reprogrammed”?

Maybe? non-turbo ECU and intake for the 2003 2.5, with a swapped JDM 2.0 short/long block?

Re: Looking for a motor

A couple hundred for shipping (and sales tax if your delivery state charges days tax).

I bought my here a few years ago and picked up while in a road trip to OR, no tax no shipping.

Re: Looking for a motor

I have a 09 2.5 w 80K miles with COMPLETE SC Vanagon installation--motor mount, wiring all tagged, intake--bolt in. New heads, T Belt, SS head gaskets with ARP studs, etc. It was removed from my van in favor of an upgrade. Located in CA.

If anyone interested, please contact

I live in the PNW and I’m hunting for a motor to replace the 2002 SOHC in my Vanagon. Anyone have one that is a good runner that they’d like to sell??

Re: ECU vs block

I do not have a turbo. When I looked up the ECU number it indicated it's for a 2.5 but I may have misquoted the year in my original post.?
(I got the filter sorted; I've ordered a Baldwin B1400 which crosses to the 15208AA100 Subaru number.)

ECU vs block

Hi there,
Last fall we took possession of an 85 bus but it was late in the year and we barely drove it, or even got familiar with it. So now I’m poking around because I want to buy an oil filter, and:
The ECU s/n indicates an ‘03 WRX, 2.5, but I’m seeing EJ20 on the block. Is this a usual arrangement?
I know there are many variables; I’m just starting down the path of deciphering what I’ve got here. (Can an EJ20 be bored out to make it a 2.5? Might the ECU have been reflashed to suit an EJ20? Does it matter very little? &tc….)
Tx,
Jim

Re: EJ251 SOHC Timing

When I installed my oil pump I squirted it full of Lucas assembly lube, which is pretty viscous. However, it’s now been sitting for some time so I’m sure it has drained down by now.?

Re: EJ251 SOHC Timing

Yes, this also relieves some of the head pressure from the pump, especially if you pre-filled the filter with oil. I couldn't get the pump to prime with the filter installed despite many attempts. It primed right away after a long crank without the filter.??

Re: EJ251 SOHC Timing

I was planning on removing the plugs and spinning it over a bit, but by removing the filter you can confirm that’s it’s pumping. Thats a great idea.?

Re: EJ251 SOHC Timing

I got this thing all timed up and running again. Close call! Compression checked out on all cylinders. Everything lined up perfectly with the new belt.
?
Just a tip for anyone trying to prime a new oil pump. I took the filter off and gave it a good 20 seconds of constant cranking with the spark plugs removed and fuel cut off to get oil to start flowing from the filter housing.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Engine Bay

I just bought a 2KW diesel heater and was wondering where to install it and especially where to install the tank. Great idea. The tank that came with mine is one of those large flat ones but I’m sure I can find one that will fit perfectly in that spot.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Engine Bay

Good idea on the battery. I’ve also seen people put their diesel heater tanks there too to keep it out of the interior of the van.

Re: Warren’s Conversion - Engine Bay

Check out this thread for sizing.?

I have had one in there since that post and working well so you can see it installed if helpful
