Re: Warren’s Conversion

Thanks! ?And thank you for moderating this forum and the wealth of information you’ve personally provided.
?
I learned so much from this forum (and the samba and YouTube) that I think it is appropriate to share the highs, lows, and how-tos of the process. When I start pulling the engine and tranny from the Vanagon I’ll photo document it as well.?

Hey Warren.
Just wanted to thank you for sharing your engine refresh pictures and writings.
I have to say…..a powder coat kit may have to make it’s way to my Christmas wish list this year!!!
Great work.
Best,
Brent

Alt light fix, 85 westy

Hi all, I’m trying to get the Alternator light working correctly as it currently stays on. I’ve looked at Weide guide but my 85 has a different style fuse panel and I have searched this group and can’t seem to find my answer.
?
Some background info:
85 westy
frankenmotor
previous owner installed solar and removed fridge.
?
Under the driver seat I found 2 blue wires (one labeled radio and the other unlabeled but screwed to the panel with a few other red wires and a wire labeled charger (one of these rant to the aux battery under the bench seat). I disconnected this blue wire and the alt light still stayed on after starting the car.?
?
I found this guide on Busaru as well as his supporting video on YouTube that might be a fix by installing a relay at the fuse panel by cutting the blue wire there (which I located on my van) but wanted to check with the group before cutting any wiring. Thanks in advance! This group has been an amazing resource!

Re: harness conversion

Ground wire to the neutral switch pin.

On mine you have to ground a terminal. I assume you have the pin out??

Hello again,
still working on my new harness conversion, 2004 Impreza AT going into a '91 MT Vanagon.
How do I tell the ECU that the vehicle is a MT now? On the ECU I/O signal sheet I can't find a pin where I should add a wire to to tell the ECU it's now manual?
Any advice?
Thanks

Re: Warren’s Conversion

I posted my issue on thesamba and got an instant answer. ?A member by the name of Go Everywhere posted this: “I believe thats the Subaru starter negative cable bracket. Part number 22442AA021.
You won't need that if you're adapting to the VW transmission.”
?
WOW thanks to Go Everywhere! ?I looked up the part number and he was correct.

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Do you have a bolt that fits it?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

The part definitely came from the Subie. I’m still driving the Vanagon (drove it to Buses by the Bridge in Lake Havasu).?

Here’s the alternator bracket. It’s very similar to the other. I’m still searching for the other bracket’s home.?

Looks like a fuel or vacuum line mounting tab ? I looked at mine and don’t have that one anywhere, assuming you mean subie part not vanagon part?

Thank you Andy. ?Although they look quite similar, I actually have the alternator bolt bracket. ?So I’m still stumped. ?I’ve looked at many of the photos I took when disassembling it, but I’m at a loss. ?

The lower bolt ?had red thread locker on it when I pulled it out so I used red again when I reinstalled it. All others got blue.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

I bought the plug wires a the Subaru dealer. I hope they work okay. They were a bit shorter than the old ones on the engine. They all went on okay but the number 3 was almost too short.?

Re: Warren’s Conversion

Shiney! That lower PS pump bracket bolt stripped out on me after taking the pump off a few times. I don't think they need Loctite. Are those OE Packard plug wires? I found the NGK blue wires worked better than stock IMO.
