Re: Puzzle - Searching Idle (Only with headlights on)

Great problem solving Wayne. I’ll run a jumper as soon as I won’t get into trouble for working on the van during the holiday!!!
I was pondering the alternator as a source of the problem as well.
Headlights turn on, increasing demand from alternator.
Alternator puts additional drag on engine, causing stumble at stop.
Just enough additional load in combination with drag caused by torque converter.
Will let you know.
Best,
Brent

Could it be the alternator. I seem to recall some engine weirdness with a faulty alternator. Edit: Fault in your alt to post in black box to Subaru harness? Try running a jumper from alt post to post in black box to see if any change. Loose post connection in black box?

Re: EG33 Hard Start

Hi Todd, That's my vote too. Fuel pressure regulator. It is letting the fuel pressure bleed off in the manifold to injectors. Paul?

Fuel pressure regulator?

I have had the same issue on my 05 Chevy Suburban. I know apples and oranges but hear me out.?
My fuel pump was bad. It had a small leak in the internal diaphragm that would slowly leak the fuel pressure were it was difficult to start at first but once going it ran flawlessly unless it sat for about 6 hours, then it would act up again. Once I replaced the pump, no more problems starting at first key turn with almost instantaneous starting.?
I hope this helps.?

I ?can also let the fuel pump cycle a few times and, no difference. It seems more like an ignition problem than a fuel one though it runs perfectly once it has started. I have read where someone else with a EG33/Impreza swap had the same problem and everyone suggested the coolant sensor but it made no difference to him. The coolant doesn’t warm up without the engine running… Mine sounds like exactly the same problem. Has anyone experienced this?

翱濒驳别濒濒别谤…..
If you’re wondering where the brake booster nipple is on your suby engine I’ve got a picture to reference.
Take a look at this….

Just above the pointing finger is a nipple with a hose connected, secured with a stainless steel hose clamp. ?
That’s the brake booster vacuum source. ?Tap into that line for a good vacuum source for your locker(s).

I have had to drill and tap in the past as there was only one for the brakes.

Re: Puzzle - Searching Idle (Only with headlights on)

Thanks Wayne and Sean. I’ll check my vss wiring to be sure it’s behaving. I’ve converted my headlights to led so there shouldn’t be much current draw BUT I did remove my dash last year (to replace heater fan motor) so wiring in that area is suspect.?
Will keep you all posted on what I find.?

I should clarify. This only ever happens when the auto tranny is in drive or reverse, never in neutral or park.
Good advice on checking the grounds Sean. ?I’ll do that. ?Thanks.

I've got a problem with idle that is easily reproducible.? With engine warm (or cold), transmission in drive, vehicle stationary, headlights off, the idle is smooth and right around 750.? Life is good.
Same conditions as above but now I turn on my headlights.? Idle begins to cycle, it surges to around 1500 and slowly tapers off to around 700 or so where it again surges.? Over and over.? This is uncomfortable as the vehicle is trying to leap forward with the surge and it just ain't right.

I've got a smallcar vss on the cv but have not tested it recently.? Doesn't make sense to me that it's faulty as the only thing that's changing that causes the surging is more alternator draw because of the headlights being on.
Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting?

With very limited knowledge of anything related to drivetrain on a syncro I hesitate to answer your question.
But I am bumping this conversation in order to get the attention of everyone on the group that has a converted syncro.....how are your locker switch hoses fed?

Another suggestion is to take the question over to thesamba or the syncro site.? Thats a syncro specific crowd and they should be knowledgeable enough to answer your question.??/g/Syncro

Where does vacuum for air lockers tie into Subaru?

Hi, I have been a member for years but never used the forum so I don’t know how to do this but I have had a lot of different people with their hands in my van and am realizing I need to do it myself.
I found the thick plastic air / vacuum hose that runs from my locker switches to engine bay just laying against the firewall and I don’t see anywhere obviousthat they should attach on my Subaru motor ?
