Re: alternator smoking.. possible wiring problem?

Also, my 60A alternator from a '92 is working just?fine, including powering fans for (1) AC, and (2) radiator, just as it did in the legacy I extracted it from.

Re: alternator smoking.. possible wiring problem?

I wonder how much current is being drawn from the alternator.? ?A heavy load will cause it to (1) require much torque, and possibly (2) overheat its windings.

Re: alternator smoking.. possible wiring problem?

It¡¯s best not to run an alternator with the field wire connected without the charge wire connected to the battery.? However, it sounds like you have a bad bearing. Time for a new alternator, and I recommend at least a 90 amp made for a later model Subaru.? The ¡¯91 is only 60 amps IRRC.

Subject: [subaruvanagon] alternator smoking.. possible wiring problem?

?

?

Went to go startup my vanagon with a 91 EJ22 and I heard a squeal coming from the alternator. Sounded like the belt and when I went back to check it out the alternator appeared to have smoke coming out of it. When I unplugged the 3 pin connector (alt light, ign on, +battery), the engine started normally with no squeal. I can recreate the squeal/smoke by simply plugging the 3 pin connector in and starting the engine.

?

This is still a new install and when I initially plugged everything in I did not connect the white wire coming out of the alternator to the battery for the first ~5 miles of driving. It was only a couple days ago that I connected it to +B. Could running the alternator without the white wire connected to +B cause some sort of overload and damage the alternator?

If you're sending via Gmail, then you can also eliminate sending the
HTML cruft by clicking on the settings icon (three vertically aligned
dots) in the lower right-hand corner of the reply compose window. Then
select "Plain text mode".
Belay that - it seems Yahoo! edits emails to ADD HTML to plain-text replies. Note this email client cannot send HTML, and the original of this post contains none.

Very naughty for a third party to unilaterally edit someone's emails. :(

Nope. I know about lots of things, you'd be amazed, but sweet FA about secretarial work!

If you'd care to describe the procedure I'll try to do it - but all I see in Gmail is the message.
This link may do the trick:

This:
"If any of the other group members reading this message knows of a way to trim replied text out of a message being posted to the subaruvanagon email address, please let us know."

I just highlight and cut. I'm sure everyone already knows about that though.

In my email client I just highlight the bit I want to respond to, and hit 'Follow-up' (for newsnet and mailing lists like this) or 'Reply' (for normal emails) to open up the edit page to compose my reply.

However, I think email clients are becoming a thing of the past. A bit like Vanagon original engines - to keep this vaguely on-topic <g>.

Re: Trim Your Replies Please

Morning Jake.
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.? Just back stateside after some holiday in Mexico.
I actually have to manually trim my replies just before hitting the send button (I use gmail for an email editor and repository of the groups messages) which seems pretty archaic but the result is good.
Sorry I can't offer any technical advice to make this process easier for us.
If any of the other group members reading this message knows of a way to trim replied text out of a message being posted to the subaruvanagon email address, please let us know.

Best,
Brent

Re: non-reversed EJ22 coolant layout help please

You were asking about "Coolant Layout" if you don't use the reverse manifold...?
They make rubber coolant hoses that make 180 turn, then run the hose across the engine and tie it into the?
stainless steel tubes that go up front to the radiator..?? This is much neater then running it all the way around the engine compartment...

Re: non-reversed EJ22 coolant layout help please

"180 degree boot right across the engine to tube to the radiator."

What does that mean ?

Re: non-reversed EJ22 coolant layout help please

I used a standard manifold.. 180 degree boot right across the engine to tube to the radiator.. Doesn't look ugly to me and I maintain 185 water temp all day for the last 15k miles...

Go for it,
Bill

Re: non-reversed EJ22 coolant layout help please

Are you looking for a stock coolant manifold? Is that what you need?

I originally got the engine for my own project, but my kids rig needed it more, you probably remember me saying it. Re: non-reversed EJ22 coolant layout help please

Hi All,?
Just wanted to add that?
I insulated the by-pass coolant hose between the (passenger-end, reversed) coolant manifold
and Tom's thermostat adapter.

I'm running 1/2" heater hose, pretty thick walled.
I don't know how much it help's, but I figured it probably wouldn't hurt ;o)

My coolant now runs a steady 195.

Pix of my non-reversed installation here:

Its awesome.

I'm having a?brain block, I mostly learn visually, hands on.? On the non-rev'd coolant manifold, I find that the only outlet I can see to make use of for the Shiels T-stat solution is the one that should go to the heater core(s).? What are my options on line from heater core back into the coolant loop? Perhaps a T or Y adapter that would be for both heater and T-stat?

My non-reversed coolant system is Tom's Concept 4 with a pipe coming off the back of the manifold that goes up the driver's side of the engine and up and over the transaxle to meet the plastic pipe.

I got a local muffler shop to bend me a couple of metal pipes to go over the J-pipe and header - pretty simple if not show car worthy!? ;)
