<MDM810@...> or <info@...> www.msdsinc.com He makes a complete "Range Panzer" kit to convert a T25 Syncro to 911 engine & G50 trans; will fit nonSyncro. He doesn't like selling a trans kit separately, just a full engine/trans kit, but did say he'd sell me a trans-only setup. If enoughSubaruvanagoneers bothered him he might begin to sell "half" kits willingly (the Half Marty?). KEP makes adaptor kits for Subaru to 915 and G50 (flywheel, adaptor plate). You need to provide the clutch, starter etc. As far as fitting trans to van, npbody makes a kit for a 915 trans, which is far weaker than the Getrag G50 anyway, and a little prone to syncro and bearing wear; its clutch mechanism needs adapting to hydraulic. The G50 also has a normal 5-speed gate and good shift-action, unlike the Vanagon-style gate & action of the 915. The old 901 trans is far too weak to consider. To fit a Porsche trans you will need the complete gearshift mechanism from the car the trans came from (or an identical car). The VW shifter won't work. The 915 trans will fit your 100mm VW CVs, and stock T25 axle length may be correct. The G50 takes 108mm CVs; normally Porsche 930 CVs are used, but are extremaly expensive new or used (PartsHeaven in San Francisco says $124US new complete, $175 per pair on axle used). Beware, the US places do not offer a complete CV at the advertised prices; $50-odd covers only the inner parts ie balls and cage, NOT the boot or base/flange. I am trying to find out whether the Type 44 Audi 100 (=5000 in USA) 108mm CVs will fit the 930 axles ie is the spline the same, length ditto. I'm waiting for a fax from a wrecker who was going to measure up a T44 CV for me. Sway-a-Way adaptor axles are needed, also Weddle 108mm stubaxles (outer flanges) . In USA a good used G50 generally costs $1800. In Germany I am buying one for DM2700 (about $1291US) including release mechanism and slave cylinder. Starter DM280, complete used clutch & ringgear DM1100, shifter complete from shifter knob to trans DM450, FAR cheaper than US prices. No 930 CVs available. Even with shipping the total cost saving over USA is big enough. The difference is over $2000NZ (@$0.42US); shipping about the same either way. Compare to US prices: trans 1800 clutch new 695 ringgear 60 release mechanism 150 slave cylinder new 57 starter 125 shift lever, coupler, linkage 550 Warren Chapman, vanagon.com member, has an Audi V6/G50 in his; Jurgen Gembler (runs www.bulli-forum, Germany) has a VR6/G50. Hope this helps. Maybe my SVX/G50 T25 will be on the road this half of the century... Oil Pan, Big Tires
I would be happy to shorten oil pans and pickup tubes for any one
that is interested. I recently finished one for a customer of mine that I cut just below where the dipstick goes in so that I did'nt have to mess with the dipstick position. reshaped the bottom slightly,welded together with 110v mig then brazed over the weld to fill any possible pinholes. no leaks, holds 3 quarts. I lenghtened the syncro skid plate and bolted it to the original engine hanger which was moved to just behind subie engine and also incorpoates a heat shield for the cat/muffler. Also installed the 235/15 tires and after cutting off a very small portion of the rear lower front wheel well trim have had no problems. van is an '87 syncro westy. This is a great list! As most of you know, I have just finished my conversion and ....as I
have stated, I am mostly very happy.... except for how LOW the header and muffler hang down. Now with KEP's shortened oil pan soon to arrive, this will be my next project on the way to getting my skid plate re-installed. I have posted a photo in the "Files" section which shows my converted van next to my other (stock) Syncro. Here's the link. The next photo shows what's going on. The engine in the Syncro sits 2 inches lower in the chassis than on a 2wd van. KEP's header was designed for 2wd vans. Therefore, the WHOLE HEADER AND MUFFLER SYSTEM hangs down 2" lower on Syncro. Not the direction we want to go. This photo shows how there's 2" of clearance left between the muffler and the VW heat shield which would allow the muffler to be raised up to create more clearance. http:/www.egroups.com/files/subaruvanagon/Syncro_Muffler_clearance.jpg Compare the first photo with one taken from Ron Bernstein's site of his 2wd van with KEP cat and muffler installed. Spoke with Hobert this AM about this problem and he's just beginning to work on a solution. Go Hobert!! In the meantime, I'm looking for a (more)immediate solution. I received this virus twice in the last 24 hours. Thank God I just
installed Norton Antivirus about a week ago, which alerted me to the danger. Norton AV could not fix it but "Quaranteened" the file. The next time it arrived I deleted the email immediately. Still Overheating
Hello,
I took a break fom working on my conversion for the last few weeks. So far all the wiring look s fine and I think I am getting the correct error codes but I still have not tried to take it in to to pass smog. Even though the engine is purring like a kitten, I am still overheating. I am pretty sure I am not getting any coolant to flow to the engine. I have looked back at previous emails and pressurized the engine per the instructions given to previous emailers. I even went as far as to have my VW mechanic come over to make sure i was doing it properly. But still know coolant flow to the engine. Any suggestions? If I do not put in a resistor in will the gauge continue to climb? If there quite a few bends in my copper tubing will this inhibit coolant frm flowing to the engine. This is what my mechanic thinks but my set up looks similar to Ron's. Thanks for the input. If this gets fized then it's off to the smog station. Sudeep |

It tends to arrive in an email addressed from [saving your reverence] <hahaha@...>. *This Address Is A Fake.* I have become rather concerned about this one over the last several weeks; I'm right now engaged in trying to help several people around the country recover from it; I've received at least a dozen copies during this time. It has been around since 25 September, and it has an astonishing technical ability to adapt itself which in my humble opinion makes it exceedingly dangerous, even though it has not created *much* actual damage to date. I say much -- I know of at least two instances where people's systems have been quickly rendered unusable, and more where the infection has been difficult to eradicate. It is technically by far the most advanced such program yet written, and its comparatively benign behavior until now is no indicator of its potential. It also appears to have advanced methods of discovering addresses to send itself to, and may make a concerted effort to prevent itself being removed from an infected system. mate a six cylinder Subaru to a Porsche tranny when the time comes.? The
tranny could easily handle the power and having the ratio choices and a limited
slip would make for a great way to get the power to the
road.

I did get to put the heater hose bypass in today.? Bleeding the rear heater was a breeze once I used the bleeder valve (thank you John S., I'd forgotten it was there).? In order to get most of the air out of the front heater core, I loosened the hose clamp and squeezed it a bit until I had too much coming out to catch with a rag (thanks for the idea, John C.).? I know there is probably air in the lines still, but I am able to drive without the engine getting hot.? I had installed a 22 ohm resistor from Radio Shack ($.49 for a pack) for the thermostat and the needle sits just a smidge to the right of dead center.? I think it is pretty accurate because once I started to overheat the other day (water boiling on head), the needle went up to 3/4 and the led started flashing.? I'll double check the temperatures with an infrared thermometer.

Anyway, I did drive to work and back today and didn't seem to have any problems.? By the grace of God it looks as though I am going to make it.? Thanks to all on this egroup.

Anyway, I saw the recent (and past) posts about a putting Subie in air 911 conversions are quite "common" in the States, and apparently work well. 911 engines are reliable. But the bigger ones (over 2.7 liters) will unduly stress your trans. Fit a Porsche 915 or G50 trans. Corvair? Why bother? I know someone who has had pushrod Subaru 1.8s in Bays, running a radiator on each side of the engine compartment, set-up in series, and reports good results. It's gut having der radiator out of sight. I sold him a decamperized engineless 75 Bay, once fitted with a Toyota V8, which he's recamperizing, derusting and fitting a turbo 1.8 Subie pushrod to, with this radiator setup. Or else bite the bullet and convert to stock watercooled Vanagon plumbing. But take advantage of the opportunity to avoid including air traps. In your place this is what I'd do, and use a Subaru engine, preferably a 3.3 six, as I'm doing. Staying aircooled means no decent heater, and dusty air from what attempts to pass as one.
