Re: Idle fluctuation on a Frankenmotor OBD1

Hi Wayne, How did you clean it?

Re: Idle fluctuation on a Frankenmotor OBD1

Thank you Bret. Is there a map of the vacuum hoses online somewhere?? I am new at this motor. Thanks for your patience.

Yup—a few people have responded. ?I need to test a few things on rigs we don’t build. ?

I am keeping a tally right now if interested parties. ?I will be sending out details in coming weeks for what we are looking to test,

Re: Idle fluctuation on a Frankenmotor OBD1

Cleaning the IAC fixed stalling at a stop for me. Recent YouTube vid mentioned the PCV regarding surging with a Subaru.? Agree the hoses are likely hard and leaky. An old analog multimeter with a needle works for picking up the VSS signal.Assume you used new intake manifold gaskets.

Re: Idle fluctuation on a Frankenmotor OBD1

Hi Robert.?

may be 2 different issues.?

idle fluctuations can be IAC related or vacuum leak.?

Check/clean iac. Thoroughly check for vacuum leaks and replace hoses as needed.

Stalling at light is often hall (speed) sensor related.?

Test it with wheel rotating to ensure its picking up the signal properly. Adjust as needed.?

Idle fluctuation on a Frankenmotor OBD1

Hi folks,?

I had a frankenmotor installed after my EJ22 failed.? Instead of rebuilding, we put a new EJ25 block on the existing rebuilt EJ22.
With EJ22 I had no idling issues. All the parts are the same except the block. System is an OBD1 from a 1991 Legacy.?
The idles surging is very slight. Slight up and downs, no power loss or hesitation.? Stalls sometimes coming off the freeway and stops (new speed sensor as well)
Any ideas where to start or a list of things I can go over to try and settle this issue?

Depending on the orientation of your water pump, the tiny valve on the thermostat either points towards the back of the van or up to the heavens.?

Re: Fuel Tank/System Odd Behavior

I used this from Summit. ?

I think I got in and out correct because it is stamped "Tank" right on it which is the way I set it up. ?So my bottom evap rail goes to the original hose on the passenger side firewall which goes to the unlabeled male end on the canister. ?Tank went to tank. ?

I used this fuel filter. ?If you have recommendation Austin I am all ears.?

I can mount either.? Had square for 70k miles.? Heard round are liquid filled so going for less vibration transmitted.

Also, why does the Kennedy engine carrier have different angles on the engine mounts from the natural angles of the engine such that the mounts get compressed on one side?

Morning Mark.?
I’m not clear on whether you tested voltage at the battery positive post while engine is running > 2000 rpm and alternator charging. Should be right around 14.3 volts.?
Also, here’s a bit of info from my site on the alternator light fix so you can double check yours.?

My #2 transplant is now installed and fired right up . total rebuild block heads MT + front diff? (syncro) . last issue is the alternator upgrade . I went for the Bosch?AL4330 since because i like Bosch and it is supposed to be compatible with 1995 legacy ( my transplant has the heart of a 1994 AT (OBD1) . here is the symptom .... my alternator light is dimly light and flickering ... the battery is freshly charged (trickle) to 100%? reads 12.8V on my craftsman charger.? Unfortunately the unit does not have any markings (S or L) on the plug pin assignments but the schematics for 1995 clearly have the white return to B+ on the RH side of the plug when you hold it with the lock tab up & the BW line feeds (Alt-1) supplies the indicator. I have put 100 k on the previous transplant and it worked perfectly . the harness was modified per Tom Shiels? (thanks tom) and was carefully inspected and rewrapped before the new install. Sadly there is very little online with respect to this alternator configurations since i appears that every car model on the planet has its own recipe. !! . anyway I have found no obvious shorts in my first glance today and i'm heading out into the wet night to do some more inspecting and going to hook up the old B10 scan tool.? I pulled some old files i had describing the common feed to the fridge but i think i may have already done that mod (its been 15 yrs ). It feels like there needs to be a resistor or something between post #1 on the plug and the indicator LED to keep it quiet . if anyone has some input I'd appreciate it . If i cant find something obvious i plant to put a 1/2 dead battery on board and see if the alternator is actually putting out.. Thanks . ill post pics on a day when it really rains ( we got lucky down here in san diego compared to up north . all the best to the folks north of us .?

The Subaru is designed to run hotter than a Vanagon WBX.? The high speed fan temp for some model year EJ25s is 210 which feels CRAZY.? The Subaru like it hotter than the VW.? Your biggest risk at this temperature is blowing up aftermarket water bottles.? They tend to be more sensitive than OE bottles. ?

?

Long story short, you won’t blow your motor at 205.?

?

For the T2: you temps are right where I would expect if you have great flow on the scoop.? It will run cool like that on the highway if your RPMs are kicked down with a better R&P.? If you add a condenser to your scoop you will see that come up into the 180s for AC.?

I have similar problems with my 2001 ej25 . My conversion project started spring 2022 so i am still trying to solve problems.

So i have the SCP setup with the heater return loop on the reversed manifold.

During summer months (temp up to 100)? i was running with 180to 190 after the first 10min of drive when the coolant circuit reached max pressure. Rad fan on when stoped.

Now we are on winter with temp below 50 and? when starting with cold engine and out on the motorway i have 205!! with steady 3000rpm rad fan always off.

If i start with cold engine and the van in parking i have a peak at 195 and then rad fan is on/off properly.

I use the original subaru Tstat of 188F water pump with 2 nipples and brand new OEM plastic expansion tank water pump with 2 nipples rad brand new with proper in hot? and out cold installed.

Was thinking to go with RMW TAMA Tstat of 172 F and run a pipe from my heater pipe with a T join directly to my 2nd nipple (Its just blocked now) on the water pump where my Tstat is.

Think i may blow head gaskets if running my van with 205.

I have a ‘74 Bay with a 1993 ej22. The rad is in the belly and has a scoop. I have the Tom Sheils t stat. Heater up front is Vintage Air and also have a heater under rear seat.?
Before adding the scoop my coolant temps would run 188-196 degrees and fans cycling. This is on the freeway and city driving. I added the scoop and now average around 172 degrees on the freeway and city as well. No fan cycling. If I’m in a parade or slow traffic temps will reach 198 degrees and fans cycle.?

It’s interesting to read others are having the same sort of low coolant temps. I’m now wondering if it’s worthwhile to check the oem t stat, but that’ll be my next step. It’s weird though the low coolant temp issue started after I installed the rad scoop.?
