Good observations.? But I disagree for this one aspect:? Motor Longevity.? The reason I got an EJ22?? Modern metallurgy.? Modern electronics.? Ease of obtaining parts.? Modern cooling.? And of course the fun ones:? Better fuel economy, better power, knowledgeable mechanics in any state of USA.? So I drive like your grandma most of the time, I only punch it when I need to.? Mostly, I need this motor to last; has 75K, needs to go to 300K+.

At 4200 rpm, the EJ22 is at its happiest under load. Just look at any dyno plot to see that¡¯s where it is making its peak torque. The more load, the better as it allows more throttle opening, i.e. less breathing restriction. With lower rpm at the same speeds, that means you would have taller gearing and less mechanical advantage so the engine would work harder at the same speeds all the while producing less torque at the wheels.
