Fired up my new frankenmotor today. My first one. Most of you know I build 50 or so Subaru motors a year. All types and sizes and have a turbo and racing specialty. This first frankenmotor was the first time I¡¯ve been nervous for a long time.
The recipe was a 1999 2.2 donor engine build out. 1999 2.5 short block from DOHC outback with square top pistons. Also used the 1.5 mil thickness 2.5 DOHC head gaskets.
The heads are single port exhaust, single overhead cam. Heads and block are all phase two.
The customer had requested a bunch of silly internal upgrades on a normally aspirated 2.2. Rather than waste a bunch of money I suggested this recipe for a nice power upgrade from 2.2 to 2.5.
In order to accomplish this successfully in your Vanagon, you must avoid valve to piston contact. What you see above is now a proven recipe to upgrade your 2.2 Vanagon swapped motor.
The customer has promised quantified results in the near future for hp and tq.
Completely rebuilt heads and block. 9 oil pump.
I suggested the frankenmotor for the first time I was responsible for the advice I¡¯ve been giving about the frankenmotor. This unserious name is a good simple upgrade.
If you have a curiosity about the hp and torque improvement I suggest this route for the DIY Vanagon guys.
I don¡¯t have any dyno numbers but the customer has agreed to report on anything he can quantify.
I think this is my first thread post also. Lol
