You are absolutely right and, in fact i am looking for a set of wheels off
Audi 5000 turbo at local junkyards.Found one set at $200 but may find better
price, have time...

You may wish to consider some taller tires. When my Westy had the Jetta
engine, it still had the diesel gearbox. I changed to 15" wheels and
235/75-15 tires, and it helped a lot. I still had great acceleration,
and the engine didn't have to do 5000rpm at cruise.
If you put on some 27.5/14's, you'll see about an 8% taller gearing
overall. The 4.57 r&p is only good for just over 5%. Tires are a little
cheaper than a trans rebuild, and if you don't like the result, it's
easy to adjust next time you buy tires. That size tire will also get
your oilpan an inch further from the ground.
