Re: Where to get parts for South Bend Lathes

Best way I know of to figure that out is to adjust wrap some rope or twine about the thickness of your belt material around the shafts/pulleys three or four times. Pin or clamp the ends so they don't shift after you give it all the slack your adjuster will allow. Then wrap a soft tape measure, like the seamstress/tailor will use, and measure the circumference. That will give you very close to the smallest length you could possibly need, and allow all the adjustment available for the belt stretching in use. If you can't find/don't have a soft tape measure, cut the string, and use one of the inner coils to measure against a normal steel-tape or yard/meter stick. Haven't done this to my lathe yet, since it's not that close to being together yet, but it works fine on the industrial laundry machines I used to work on that use flat belt. One of the belts was a 120' woven wire belt, which was some fun to get measured, cut, and the ends spliced. ;) The smaller belts that vacuumed lint of the mats were a bit under a yard long, and we used the crimp-type alligator splices on those.?

A skinny steel-tape might work, depending on radius of the pulleys/shafts. One that will flex easily in either direction.?

I have looked at the belts I measured the old one hard to get a true measurement. The old one was? 59 3/4 length ? but it was stretched out. My adjustment was at the longest setting. The old one is 1/4 inch thick the new leather is 1/8.
If I order one 2 inches shorter would that be right? Hate to just guess and not be right.
Stamped numbers at the tail stock is CL8187RB on the plate on head is 210 46 R.?

I've got a Heavy 10L restoration project sitting here on hold for other reasons, but I tripped over this source of custom belts for SB lathes on a link from another forum and totally different subject. These may be the folks who sell on ebay, but I don't know for sure. They also mention Atlas lathes. I've not seen an Atlas that uses flat belts, but not by any means an Atlas expert, either. HTH!

Those are the same as they sell on eBay. I have one on my SB13. I think they are excellent.?
