??? ??? You can turn a 9B into a 9A much easier that a 9C to a B or A . The C does not have the keyway cut in the lead screw? & I? think there may be a difference on the left side of the leadscrew also ,

??? ??? but don't quote me on that . You might search the files section & get a copy of HTRAL or How to run a lathe if no one has mentioned before .

??? Theres also some folks worth checking out on youtube? , mrpete22 , Joe Pie , Blondihacks just to mention a few .

The 10K is almost the same lathe only adds 3/4" to the swing and it take a 5/8" collet.?

Re: New Guy

Yes I agree,I've looked at some 10" Atlas lately& almost bought one but decided to wait I really feel that I want something more hefty.ive been really happy & somewhat surprised at what that little 6" Atlas has been capable of.That being said I have nothing against the atlas' but south bend just seems better.?

Re: New Guy

Speaking as a guy who owns an Atlas TH42 and a South Bend Heavy 10L in need of a great deal of restoration after spending at least 5 years in a leaky barn, and having used South Bend 9" lathes in a high school class about 50 years ago, get the South Bend if you can, but an Atlas will be better than nothing if you can't find a South Bend. ;) I like my Atlas! I'm absolutely certain I'll love my Heavy 10L. The Atlas is about 267lbs. The 10L is 1067lbs. The extra weight helps a lot with stiffness and dampening vibration. I've not even seen a 9" South Bend since that high school class, but even they are heavier than the Atlas lathes, so unless it's a real wreck, you'd probably be better off with a 9" South Bend.?

It all depends on what's available in your area. I spent 34 years looking for any old lathe. Finally settled for a Harbor Freight 93212 Mini-Lathe in 2008. Found my TH42 in 2015, and got the Heavy 10L from Bill Hinkle in 2018, and it's been sitting on hold since 2020...?

Fortunately, I have the Atlas to help me with stuff I might need to make for the 10L.?

Re: 9" countershaft mods

I had a bench 9A .
I used a DC motor and Grove the large pully for v belt directly to the motor to head stock.?
The DC motor gave me 100 to speed and 1 hp to keep torque up at lower speed.?

Today I have a 9A UMD?

Re: 9" countershaft mods

That's interesting. Thanks

South Bend 9 and 10k UMD AS2607NK2 Bracket

I am in the process of doing a rebuild on a SB 9 UMD. There is a bracket behind the upper part of the UMD unit. My bracket is broken and the broken piece is gone. Mine has a hole in it that has a return spring of some sort. Where the hole is where mine is broken. SB parts catalog shows it as AS2607NK2 part number. I found one on ebay but the seller states it is the later style with no hole. Can anyone tell me what that bracket is for? Also, does anyone have one of those? Much appreciate if someone can help with this. Thanks,? Larry

SB milling attachment wanted

This is the second time I have posted this request for a milling attachment and the replies were posted on a different email address that I didn't check.? So I'll try again with the other email address. dogbreath312@....? If anybody has a nice milling attachment for a reasonable price email me along with a picture of the attachment.? If it is at all rough looking please don't bother. I don't want any mills that have been hit by tooling or torn up.

Re: 9in. Milling attachment

Did you find your milling attachment?

Re: 9in. Milling attachment

You can use your Aloris tool post for milling keys ways. It can do other milling to the dovetail and be adjusted up and down for milling.??

Dave?
