I know there are many that want to keep their lathes as close to OEM design as possible.? For them, if it came with change gears, keep the change gears. However since I see that you might consider the expense and learning curve of a 3d printer, have you considered some customization of your lathe instead?? What I am thinking is a Electronic Lead Screw (ELS).? An ELS would eliminate the change gear setup entirely and give you infinite ratios and even change on-the-fly.? A couple of years ago, James Clough created a design for an ELS.? He even sells the critical components that you can add to the commonly available components, such as motor, sensor, pulleys.? Maybe you want to check it out.? On his YT channel, 'Clough42', he created a series of videos at the time of development, then later followed with some other videos of tweaks.?
