??? That kiddie train is bad ass ! I live a few miles from the Western Pacific Railroad Museum . They have @ 160 pieces of engines & rolling stock , but everything there is a 2 track , no mono's here . Sounds like they have the cow to market all figured out . I'm amazed at just how many people, chickens guys with machine guns or the such they manage to fit on one motorcycle in that part of the world . I think I may have seen a pic with a guy & his cow on a motorcycle .

Re: More train talk
开云体育On the subject of monorails, don't forget the Patiala state railway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDKDY6SVHxg and Listowel & Ballybunion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-_5YOHa0sg. On the latter, if you wanted to take a cow to market, you put it in one side of a wagon, and 2 half size cows or big calves the other side. On removing the big cow at its destination, you moved one of the smaller ones to the other side to achieve balance on the return "empty" journey. (It's Ireland.) Eddie

Photo received! Looks great. But more importantly, how about that garage full of old mopars???? I used to race 1963-1964 426 max wedge cars.

Re: Dial indicator crystals (new rabbit hole for me!)
Recently been down this road.? I inherited a bunch of crystal install tools that my Dad made and been using them.? He also gave me all the math to figure out how big to make them for the proper crown, but it's over my head.? Of course he only had a formal education to 12 years old, and I'm a degreed engineer, but that's another story.......? I just wing it, and make them 0.020" +/- bigger than the bezel, depending on the size of the crystal.
I tried many of the materials available on Amazon.? Much of it is not what it is advertised to be.? I wish I knew what my Dad was using for materrial, but I don't know.? I have a little left and am saving it, no idea for what.? I settled on polycarbonate, roughly 0.025" +/- (from memory) thick.? I found that that if I put too much crown in the polycarbonate it cracks after a period of time.? Keep the crown reasonable and no issues.? The problem with other materials that I bought on Amazon was that it dented the plastic during installation because it was too soft.? Tried plexiglas and that that was a no go - will not bend without heat, just breaks. The crystals can be made on a lathe, but I make them on a CNC mill.? I use a small tapered end mill (forget the taper, but probably 60 degree) and interpolate the circle.? Works well as it gives me the bevel I need on the edge and is really easy and quick for me to make. I do it for fun and for practicality.? Doing them myself custom I don't need to worry about the ones I order if they would fit, and my stuff is old so no idea if the ones available are even an option.? I clean and calibrate my own indicators so I don't rely on anyone for them. This is an example of a crystal that I made and installed. -- 1969 16" x 6' South Bend Lathe Garage full of old Mopars........ |
Re: Dial indicator crystals (new rabbit hole for me!)
开云体育This is not cutting crystals,? but it is a cheap and easy way to remove/install curved crystals already the correct size. It is a lathe group after all. Those are PVC plumbing fittings. I will be listing some mineral glass crystals on Ebay soon for Federal indicators if anyone needs one, let me know. I have some other sizes as well.On 12/19/2023 10:57 AM, George

开云体育I cannot vouch for the quality as it came from Amazon although it has worked for a couple of years. Several sellers have what appears to be the same unit. Here is a link, but it may not be the best deal:On 12/22/2023 9:17 PM, mike allen

For my 1942 single lever Heavy 10L I didn’t want to muck up the gear cover so I pressed a rare earth magnet into the opposite end of the bearing clamp hole and then put a small TO-92 size hall sensor in a plastic tube shoved into a bracket.? One pulse per revolution is fine for my Electronic Lead Screw which shows spindle RPM or if the tool tip is calibrated from the centerline it’s possible to read SFM. ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]
On Behalf Of Gary Johnson via groups.io ? This is for a heavy 10L, but maybe it will give you some ideas. I used 1/8" dia rare earth magnets (four), mounted in 3/8" dia aluminum pucks epoxied to the gear. They are sized so that the magnets would pass very close to the Hall-effect
sensor. The sensor was mounted on an aluminum tee bracket affixed to a spot I flattened off and added a tapped hole. This sensor was part of the accessories offered with the old MachTach kit which unfortunately is no longer made. |
