Re: Stand

Hi Dave.

First, before I knew much about the 405, I screwed up the head stock and changed to a side oiler but here is how I think things work.

?

On the rear of the headstock to the left and a bit lower than the spindle is a hole.

It’s a bit dark but you can just see it in the attached picture.

When you run in reverse, a stub shaft with am idler gear is inserted into this hole and I believed Locked,

?

?

While I never actually owned on, this is what it looks like. I am not sure how it locks in place or if it just pushes in.

It appe3ars to be a 32 tooth gear. I have attached a SB document showing how to set up the 405 gears. You can see the 32 tooth gear in this document.

?

Does this answer your question?

In the files section of the home page, and I have no problem accessing them just now, there is a folder. “ SB Bench”. This will give you all the dimensions you need.?

In addition in the folder “Techinfo”?

Find the file “SBArmylathe.pdf”

Mounting dimensions are there also.?

Re: 9a gear box tight

Looks like shimming might be the only option, I can't see to fund turcite easily on the UK and the carriage kills any chance of ordering from the US

Saying that I have no idea what to do with it even if it was put in my hand.

Going to be a big job looking the amount I'd need to drop everything I think I'm going to have to drop the rack as well.

I appreciate the advice, I might swap some bits around and see what happens, not really knowing how to measure bed wear isn't helping, but the other one has a ridge on the inside of the inner rail which I have heard several times is a sign of heavy wear, saying that the "good" one might be so worn this has been worn off :)

Re: 9a gear box tight

That’s where I was going.?
Can you shim the GB ?and leadscrew or move the saddle up with Turcite

Sadly I have found the problem, seems obvious now but had me baffled when I was stood in front of it, I'm making one (good?) lathe from the bits of 2 a 9a and a 9c, the bed from the c was in better condition but the saddle was really worn, I mean to the point that the flat section has worn into it, this is throwing the position of the worm off enough to jam the lead screw up, putting the other saddle on solves the problem.

Long story short, the 9a bed is in much worse condition, most of the dings are on the tailstock rails, c bed much better but saddle is toast, so I wonder which is worst using worse bed but mathing saddle or a better bed with non matching saddle?

Due to a shortage of parts, just trying both options would mean a great deal of disassembly and reassembly

Re: 9a gear box tight

Not that many old members are hear yet. The group Transfer is still pending.
Should not be very tight. With the lead screw attached to the gearbox and at the tail stock end and theSaddle and apron in place, Does the carriage move smoothly?

9a gear box tight

Hi all, first post on groups :)

Just got the quick change on to the bed and noticed it becomes very tight after screwing everything together, on the bench all the sections turn freely, also with the leadscrew attached is fine.

I never had the chance to see it running as it arrived to me in bits, but I don't think I missed anything?

Any suggestions ?would be appreciated greatly.

Regards?

Adam
