I have recently purchased a 9" Lathe, model A, with gearbox.
It has flat belt drive.

The casting number is W35NK5 and the serial number is 46817NCR10.

The threading dial is missing, perhaps someone could point me to a
replacement.

I'd like to purchase a quick change tool post, maybe a steady rest and
other accessories.
All advice welcome.

Thanks for any help, in anticipation.

Steve

Haven’t done a serious threading job with it yet, just a little playing around, but it looks like it’s going to work fairly well.?

I did a write up on it over on ?under the thread titled?

If you want to check it out.

Re: New Owner

I made my own thread dial for my 1937 9 inch.? I ordered a gear from Grizzly that was the right pitch and made the thread dial around it.? It aint fancy, but it works just fine.

Welcome to the group.?
Your lathe dates from December 1960.?
As will be mentioned, accessories are often found on eBay.?
Get acquainted with prices first.?
Also note that you have a 9” Workshop lathe.?
Southbend made at least 4 different 9” Lathe’s.?
Parts don’t interchange between models.?
Make sure it says Workshop.?

Newbie introduction

I am the new owner of a Junior 8, Model 408 A.? I am also new to metal machine work.? I am a hobby woodworker and wood turner.? I also restore old woodworking machines.? My interest in the Junior, beside the fact that it appears to be a fairly rare machine, is that I may be able to use it in aid of my restoration work, once I learn how.

My only other Yahoo! group is mitsubishitractors.? ?I have an MT 2201D, which is a 4WD, four cylinder compact diesel always in need of attention.? I suppose a metal lathe might be useful there, too.? I'm a member of some online woodworking and machine restoration groups, but I'll check the forum rules before I post any links.

My metal shop now consists of several HF tools, including their 20 ton press, 36" brake and 30" shear/press brake/slip roller.? I have a couple old Canedy Otto drill presses: a working bench top and a Royal 18 floor model still to be restored and in need of parts which I may try to fabricate if I can't locate them.? I also have a small oxy-acetylene torch set up and a little Hobart MIG welder.

I live in the Colorado Springs area.? I was a lawyer and and insurance adjuster before that, but I've been retired for quite awhile.? I own a few rental houses which keep me busy, but mostly like to travel and dink around in the shops.

That's all, I guess.? I look forward to reading your posts and learning.

Re: traveling steady for 16" lathe

Thanks for the pics Lance. I’m going to keep looking out for a correct SB rest.

Re: traveling steady for 16" lathe

I took dimensions from my original South Bend telescopic follow rest.

Holes on the saddle are drilled exactly in line with original holes on the right side of the saddle.

Frame was cut on a CNC plasma cutter and then rectified on a belt sander. Water jet cutter would probably do a better job.

Cylindrical parts were made out of CRS. Alignment holes were drilled . A small alignment jig was manufactured in order to weld components at 120 degrees apart.

The difficult parts to manufacture are the fingers because of the internal 3/8-10 LH thread. I don’t have the tap.

I will send pictures tonight when I come back from work.

Prototype 1 has a small defect. It is too much to the left and forces the QCTP to be overhanging too much on the left, inducing risk of chatter.

I have plans to manufacture one for my 12 in atlas as well.

Nice job. Looks good. Great idea. Would you please discuss how you made this? I am especially interested on how you got everything lined up, parts, and dimentions.
Thanks,
Steven

Here is my homemade version for my 10K. Telescopic jaws basically have same design as the original SB follow rest. The difference, it bolts down on the left side of the saddle. It is adapted to the use of a QCTP. I want to manufacture a variant with a small offset of the head to the right.

Traveling steady rest

Eric,

I didn’t get your email, but the steady is a third party rest.
It attaches to two holes I drilled and tapped in the arms of the carriage.
I’ll send a picture tomorrow of the unit attached to my lathe .
