I've heard it called a zipper.? You just pull the pin and thread
the belt through.? Much easier than disassembling the headstock.

Hi Folks,
I've spent the last year rebuilding a 9A lathe, it's
looking good
I'm about to re-assemble the headstock and before I do I
have a question about the drive belt
It's a flat belt drive and most belts have what I believe
is called a hog ring connector to connect the ends. Am I
correct thinking those can be taken apart so they can be
installed on the lathe or does it have to be installed before
the spindle is installed?
Thanks?

Took a bit of time, didn't it! Now throw a rope over the gunwale and give a helping hand to everyone wanting to scramble aboard it'll be smooth sailing. Kind of fitting to celebrate the moving of our group on the weekend where we remember those who served and died for our great Nation, some with the support of these fine old American-made SouthBend Lathes. My little 9" SBL was first delivered December 20th, 1941, IIRC.
A blessed Memorial Weekend to all!

Thanks, Paul, for your effort!

Re: Getting away from Yahoo
We are not the first or only group to move. The Logan Lathe group left a few weeks ago. Everything seems OK there. ? You have an ?Repulsion- Induction motor. They were a very early type, dating the 1910’s, which did not use a starting capacitor. The electrolytic had not been perfected at they time. They start as a Universal, brush type, and then switch to induction. Very large compared to todays compact motors. ? I have seen them rigged with a choke cable, so you can reverse them from the operators position. ? I had a 1 HP on my Springfield shaper. ? ? ? Jim B. ?

This is really great the group is no longer with Yahoo! I signed up maybe 10 years ago, over the years I tried to access Yahoo again, but I couldn't remember my login or password, so I tried to make a new account.
Not gonna happen with Yahoo, it's MANDATORY for you to include your mobile phone number. I don't use a mobile phone, and no way to click on something to inform Yahoo of that fact. I really don't need another $40+ monthly bill just to listen to 8 telemarketing clowns a day burning my minutes!
I was on about 5 other Yahoo groups, anyone know if it's going to be a general bug out from Yahoo and to this site? I hope.
I got a 9x19 model A? It's the one with the QC gearbox and the power crossfeed, taper attachment, 2 chucks, faceplates, all kind of other stuff. Bought it from the original owner for $500; also bought his B-Port at the same time.
It came with this weird 1/2hp motor, an impulse repulsion or something like that. It has a lever on the end bell that moves the brushes on the commutator. Move the lever to one extreme and the motor spins clockwise to 1100rpm. Move the lever the other way and the motor slows and comes to a stop, then starts spinning slowly counter clockwise until at the other stop it's at 1100 again.
They quit making these in the mid 70's when the copper prices tripled; these motors used a LOT of copper. LOL -- Jim B

Paul, ?thanks for making this move. ?So far, has been far superior to yahoo groups, on the other forums I belong to. Much more efficient photo handling and search functions for old threads.
