Re: FS: Two Lathe Chucks 1-7/8 x 8tpi - early 10L or 13"
Hi There,
?
I know I am late to the Party but I thought I would
pass along a little knowledge about the Heavy Ten
with the 1-7/8" x? 8tpi spindle.
?
When the "Heavy Ten" first came out, it had that spindle
and was known as the 10R (Not 10L).? Now, as WWII came
about, SBL offered the Heavy Ten with a larger spindle
thread and bore (i.e. the 2-1/4" x 8tpi spindle).? This was
the 10L and it was a resounding success.? The 10R was
continued up through the 1950's but was phased out
by the early 60's.? Most of the last ones were discounted
and sold to vocational schools.
?
Now, if you look at the unit codes on various sub assemblies
(like the compound, tail stock, apron, etc.) on the 10L, most
of the assemblies have the suffix code "R".? Only those assemblies
that were specific to the larger spindle (like the headstock)
had an "L" suffix code.? In fact, the spindles are interchangeable?
between the two and some people "upgraded" their 10R's
to 10L's by swapping the spindle (and chucks, face plates,
collet assemblies, etc.).? I did this to one of mine (but in my
case, I swapped in a late model L00 spindle).
?
So, I remember the (10R) as the "Regular" spindle Heavy Ten?
and the (10L) as the "Large" spindle Heavy Ten.? They are the
same lathe except for the spindle.
?
Good Luck!

Yes, your 50 hertz 1425 rpm motor will run at 1725-1750 on 60 hertz. I think your motor will have a centrifugal starter switch wired to the start capacitor. The problem with running 50 Hz motors on 60 Hz is that the centrifugal switch will cut out before the motor is up to speed (switching off at 1425 rpm while motor is heading for 1725 rpm). This would be a problem if the motor is heavily loaded on start up, but I don't think would be a problem on a 10L which usually would use a 1/2 HP motor.
?
The theoretical rpm on 60 hertz is 1800 rpm, but motor slip yields the 1725 you are seeing. The nameplate 50 hertz of 1425 rpm is 50/60 x 1800 = 1500 rpm theoretical, 1425 rpm with slip.

开云体育Hi Mike, good suggestion, but I'm already set with chucks, I think.? The 10L came with a Buck 3 jaw, and a 4 jaw.? And I've already got another 5.5" Bison 3 jaw that is in great shape.? I need to machine a backing plate for the Bison.? Thanks, Stan?On 8/11/2024 12:30 PM, mike allen via

StanF SB Heavy 10 Lathe
I purchased a new SB 10L lathe yesterday...some history...I've had quite a bit of lathe turnover over the past 25-30 years:
?
1st: Atlas-Craftsman 12" (~1997) - worked well.? Good starter lathe.? But the small spindle hole was problematic at the time.?
?
2nd: Logan 11" (~1998-2005) - awesome, tight lathe with 5c collet closer.? I have regretted selling it for almost 20 years
?
?
no lathe from ~2006-2017 - just didn't have the space, need, etc
?
?
3rd: Import 9x20 (2017-2024) - It was bought used and was really inexpensive, and it made a few parts.? Small footprint and easy to move.? Not a joy to use by any means.? Did I mention that it was really inexpensive?
?
4th: 1945 South Bend 9A (2024) - it was disassembled and not running when purchased (it was cheap!) I did a full disassembly and paint.??
Before:
?
After many hours of work!
(I know the mobile base isn't ideal for a lathe, but it works for me!? And is great for storing tooling) ?It's amazing how much smoother and better running a 79 year old SB lathe was compared to the almost new import 9x20.??Sadly, I'll probably end up selling my 9A.??
?
5th:? (the point of this post!)
Purchased yesterday...my 1968 Heavy 10...hopefully, this will kill the regret that I still feel after selling the Logan 11".??
?
It came with a bunch of tooling - not all of it fits the 10L.? So, I'll sell off the misfits, so I can buy the missing/broken 10L parts that I need.??
I'm a big fan of 5C collets, and was lucky to get a working setup:
?
Only half of these will work with my 10L:
?
Missing bit...thread dial - the 3d print idea is interesting - thanks Rogan.
?
Sadly, I'm also missing the Steady Rest:
?
?
Broken 5C collet rack bracket - I can probably repair it.? Or find a replacement.? Or maybe not even install it - I'm not sure that it is a useful accessory.
?
As far as future plans...I'll probably end up doing a full disassembly, felts, lube and paint.? Here's the tailstock to give you an indication of some of the paint condition:

Re: FS: Two Lathe Chucks 1-7/8 x 8tpi - early 10L or 13"
In regards to your threading dial -- I made one from a 3d print pattern I found (on thingverse, I think. Mine was for a 10k, you'd want to check to get the correct version for your lathe).? I had a friend print it for me, since I don't have a 3d printer yet, and didn't want to pay the?~$30 to get a print from folks on ebay.? You could do that, or make an order from a place like shapeways. I turned & stamped / engraved a brass disk for the actual dial part, and a bit of sanding / painting later, and it looks the part and works great!? It also wasn't $300+ which seemed to be the asking price for an actual metal one. Photos attached. --Rogan On Sun, Aug 11, 2024 at 9:32?AM Stan via <sfaullin=[email protected]> wrote:

FS: 10" 4 jaw Chuck -2-1/4 x 8tpi
Update on 8-13-24: SOLD
?
This was included in a recent lathe purchase, but is too large for my 10L.? It would probably be a good fit for a SB 13", which I think is also 2-1/4 x 8tpi.??
?
No marking except for Kalamazoo.? It looks like it's a Buck casting from the backside, but again, no Mfg marking that I found with limited cleaning.? No chuck key.??
?
Email me for high resolution pictures.? $175 + shipping, but let me know if that seems out of range.? Hopefully, I can squeeze it into a priority mail flat rate box for shipping.

FS: Two Lathe Chucks 1-7/8 x 8tpi - early 10L or 13"
Two lathe chucks were included with my recent lathe purchase that don't actually fit my (1968) 10L.?
?
They are both 1-7/8 x 8tpi.? From my limited research, it appears that this is an uncommon size used on early SB 10L and 13" lathes.??
?
Both chucks are by DE Whiton, and neither has a chuck key.? They need a good cleaning, but nothing appears broken on either.??
?
5" 3 jaw - the 3 jaw requires a square socket, which is uncommon in my experience (see picture).? $125, includes flat rate priority shipping to the lower 48.??
?
The 4 jaw is a 6".? $125, includes flat rate priority mail shipping to the lower 48.
?
Message me for higher resolution pictures.? If my price seems out of range, feel free to email offers or offer constructive feedback.? I need a 10L thread dial, so a trade could be possible.? If you live in Texas, then a local pickup in Central or North Texas is also possible.??

Re: Wiring a Korean 10K switch
Thanks for all of your help I have the motor up and running as a result. I did notice that the 1425 rpm motor is running close to the 1725 rpm original. I’ll keep an eye out for any smoke or overheating but at this point it seems fine. I’ll probably pick up another motor to keep around just in case. At least I will have no problem rewiring it. Thanks again for your help.? |
