You are very likely not seeing the captcha because JavaScript is required for that. The same is true for the FFDL website which is also based on JavaScript, that's the reasony why you always see the "Loading...Please Wait" screen. If someone gets the page Karen mentioned in a browser it'd be great if you could save it as html and send it to me, that would be very helpful. (Preferable saved with Chrome Browser) I've tried everything but never got the captcha page. Seems like I'm very much human to them even if I download 300 chapters in a row... this behaviour is caused by the cloudflare Captcha page. Somewhere in the middle of downloading the story, the captcha page appears and is of course not solved. So no further chapters are downloaded. Not sure if it'll help if I just add a Sleep of maybe 5 sec between chapters, I need to test this. Cloudflare adds a multiple second delay to check if you are human. that'S why it takes longer if it's working compared to being faster if you are stuck at the error-page If this won't solve the issue then I'm going for plan B: It'll just stop downloading when a captcha page appears, Show you the page to resolve the captcha and continue after you've confirmed that the chapter is now visible. Simple in theory :-) But the internal structure of FFDL is not prepared for that so it'll take some time. But with this approach FFDL will behave like any human controlled browser. (Interesting finding: There are services available where you can send the captcha to and get it resolved by a human. It costs only 3$ per 1000 captchas......Something to keep in mind) I hope you are able to survive for now with retrying some downloads, I'm working on the issue Rai Am 23.12.2020 um 09:22 schrieb iiradned via groups.io: Had the same initial results downloading Harry Crow first getting only 52 chapters. Re: new ffn problem. anyone actually?
API = Applications Programming Interface This is the thing that the scripts (programs) in web pages use to talk to the database that is behind the web site. For service-hosted (people you pay to keep your data safe, and to dish it out to your users/members/employeed) web pages, an API Key is provided as a way of ensuring that the API calls (data requests) are (a) authorised and (b) routed to the correct database service. The API Key is incorporated in the scripts on the web page. -------- Having said this, you may find that clearing your browser cache will fix the problem. If your browser is using an old copy of the page, or old copies of the scripts, then there is no way in hell that you're going to get through. Alysson Rowan LinkedIn:????? Academia:??? More to the point, can it be assigned to an ip address or service, rather than an account? as in, could those at ffn grant permission based on that level? Karen On Wed, 23 Dec 2020, Raimond Eisele wrote:

Speaking personally though, when I follow your link I get the following. Please enable cookies. One more step Please complete the security check to access www.fanfiction.net Please stand by, while we are checking your browser... Please turn JavaScript on and reload the page. Please enable Cookies and reload the page. Why do I have to complete a CAPTCHA? Completing the CAPTCHA proves you are a human and gives you temporary access to the web property. What can I do to prevent this in the future? If you are on a personal connection, like at home, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware. If you are at an office or shared network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices. Cloudflare Ray ID: 605e8ae88fd13642 o Your IP: 66.172.12.120 o Performance & security by Cloudflare ...which is why I still want to reach someone at ffn. No captcha is presented at all, and many cannot solve them regardless. as stated, a downloader cannot address my issue, although I am happy it works for you. |

I know this tweet, an api would be really great but let's wait until we know the conditions /limitations/agb they will set before we celebrate. I think the best case we could expect would be an api that is free for individual access with a limitation of requests done per hour/day (maybe also an api key that is connected to an individual fanfiction account) . But we'll see. Keep your fingers crossed. Implementing such an api shouldn't take more than a few hours. Rai Am 23. Re: new ffn problem.
Had the same initial results downloading Harry Crow first getting only 52 chapters. Tried again this time got only 102.
Restarted ffdl and tried Harry Crow again. This time instead of clicking "Check & Download", I clicked "Check" first, looked at the UI and saw it finding 106 chapters then clicked "Download fanfiction" and got all 106. Tried a different fic () with 102 chapters got all 102. One thing I did notice is that ffdl gets about 1 chapter per second of a fic when downloading correctly, if the chapter count goes faster than that it is only getting that chapter titles. All of the above was done without being logged in to ff.net |
Re: new ffn problem. ATTN Rai
Downloaded the 32-bit version.
My Avast anti-virus gave me the only hiccup, as the program is so new they had to examine it first before I could install it. Disabled the anti-virus for the install and that went without a hitch. Re-enabled the anit-virus and ran ffdl, it checked for malware and found none. It works fine now. |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi @all, a 32-Bit version of FFDL 0.9.2 is now online and ready for
download, that should address most complaints. I've tested it on a freshly installed Win 7 32 Bit and everything
seems to be working well. One of my testers reported that he/she
wasn't able to start the application on win 7 but for now I don't
know if thats a general problem or just a special case. @ArielSchnee & other XP users: Since the build system is now
finally fully working I'll try to build a version that's also
running on your old machine. We'll see what happens if I configure
the build tomorrow to run with such an old setting. I've never
imagined that there are still so many XP users out there So, it's time for bed now - I hope that I don't wake up to a ton of bug-mails again, that's not a fun way to start a day ;-) Rai Am 21.12.2020 um 17:22 schrieb Harley

Navy still using WYSE terminals for some things as of early 2000's.?
Instead of trying to learn and bridge Win3.1 to an older system, had to try to dust off old and unused Win3.1 knowledge in order to figure out to tell some POS equipment to do some other POS job. Lot's of "Hey! What was the cmd to get it to do this again?".?
It did help cement an attitude of awe at our amazing skills that we could get the old fossils to do things that the younger guys didn't know it could do... or possibly derision that we were fossils too... I prefer to think of it as awe.

Of course not. They want to be sure all the bugs are out of the system!
No, I couldn't type that with a straight face. Cheap bastards. I was in the Navy when Win3.1 was rolled out. And, ohhh the bitching that was to be had.? Mostly, that was because the majority of the computer systems were OLD unix based monstrosities with platter drives and reel to reel backups and dumb terminals. So, we went from dumb terminals to having to bridge networks with 386 based systems. That was NOT FUN AT ALL! -coughs- sorry. I still get flashbacks of that miasma. Did it work? No, not really... Who got the blame for that? People like yours truly. Am I bitter? You're GD right!? -coughs- I may be jaded.... a bit. OK, the conversion of TV failed with an 'Error 1' overnight.
Other fics seems to be coming out OK and converting with no problems.
I think the problems with FFD skipping chapters may have just been hiccups on FFN's end.

I'm testing with Taylor Varga (FFN Version) with 393 chapters and over 1 Million words.
Note that the SV version is at 580 chapters with 1.9 Million words.
I am testing with TV while logged in, but I will also do a test while logged out using a smaller fic to see if there is any difference in number of chapters grabbed.
The FFD version I downloaded today shows the correct number of chapters (1 to 393) in the boxes.
OK, the download itself took about 10 minutes and the HTML file shows all the indicated chapters.
One thing I have noted is that the conversion to PDF does takes exponentially longer as the size of the fic increases.
That might just be down to problems in whatever converter process/plugin is being used.
For example, a single large chapter will normally take about 30-60 seconds to convert while TV's 393 chapters has taken over three hours so far and is still going.

As I usually prefer Linux, I tried the Windows port on my only remaining Win10 machine. I got a captcha when going from an author page to a story, but not when going directly to a story (from Google). They stopped after I logged in.
As far as long stories go, I used RobSt's Harry Crow () at 737k words as an experiment. When not logged in, it only grabbed 52/106 chapters. Trying again (after logging in) it got 104/106 chapters. I don't know if logging made a difference or not. I'll try to bring another Windows box up tomorrow to see if the difference is in the login and will try the Linux port when available. Mike |

XP is great, but I prefer 7. Mind you, I only just managed to get a hold of an XP-64 install for one of my XP machines. Now it hums along, and handles the extra RAM.
