Navy still using WYSE terminals for some things as of early 2000's.?
Instead of trying to learn and bridge Win3.1 to an older system, had to try to dust off old and unused Win3.1 knowledge in order to figure out to tell some POS equipment to do some other POS job. Lot's of "Hey! What was the cmd to get it to do this again?".?
It did help cement an attitude of awe at our amazing skills that we could get the old fossils to do things that the younger guys didn't know it could do... or possibly derision that we were fossils too... I prefer to think of it as awe.
Of course not. They want to be sure all the bugs are out of the system!
No, I couldn't type that with a straight face. Cheap bastards.
I was in the Navy when Win3.1 was rolled out. And, ohhh the bitching that was to be had.? Mostly, that was because the majority of the computer systems were OLD unix based monstrosities with platter drives and reel to reel backups and dumb terminals.
So, we went from dumb terminals to having to bridge networks with 386 based systems. That was NOT FUN AT ALL! -coughs- sorry. I still get flashbacks of that miasma. Did it work? No, not really... Who got the blame for that? People like yours truly. Am I bitter?
You're GD right!? -coughs-
I may be jaded.... a bit. Possibly.
maybe...
