Project Description and Schedule UES is hiring multiple field technicians to help conduct an Intensive Archaeological Pedestrian Survey (Class III Inventory) in the Reno/Sparks area, Storey County, NV. This pedestrian survey is expected to be conducted in a single 8-day field session. These positions have potential for long-term, permanent employment for the driven, collaborative, and reliable archaeologist. The ideal candidate will have experience with Class III pedestrian surveys in Nevada or surrounding areas, an understanding of the prehistoric archaeological record of Nevada and/or the Great Basin, familiarity with digital data collection, and an appreciation for the importance of efficiency and teamwork in pedestrian survey workflows. This project-specific work opportunity may develop into career-trajectory placement for the right person. We are seeking a staff archaeologist for field work primarily in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The position is a permanent, full-time, salaried position. Responsible for maintaining project fieldwork schedule, leading crews in the field, and archaeological reporting at the direction of the Section Head or Senior Archaeologist. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Conducts archaeological field work to locate and identify sites Conducts archaeological monitoring during construction projects or pre-construction Collects data and field samples during archaeological investigations Analyzes historic and pre-historic artifacts Documents methodologies and findings of research and archaeological investigations Takes daily notes of field progress Schedules fieldwork based on project schedule Instructs field crews on how to use equipment, technology and field methods, as required Write archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms Uses the National Register Criteria for Evaluation to make site eligibility recommendations for the National Register of Historic Places Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet JMT and professional quality standards Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities Perform other related duties as assigned Required Experience Master’s Degree from an accredited school in archaeology Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards for Archaeologists 3+ years of experience Demonstrated experience in Phase I-III fieldwork Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Powerpoint Proficiency in ESRI FieldMaps Application or similar applications Must have valid driver’s license Preferred Experience Registered Professional Archaeologist Familiarity ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro and/or other GIS programs Working Conditions Work is performed in the field at least 50% of the time and requires the ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs as needed. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Out-of-town travel is expected, requiring driving and/or flying to project locations for extended periods of time. Office work is performed within a general office environment approximately 50% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Who You Are (Minimum Requirements): We are seeking an individual with a minimum of 5 years’ experience who will be responsible for field surveys, recordation of archaeological resources, archival research, Native American Tribal Government consultation, resource evaluations, construction monitoring, and cultural report drafting needed to comply with both the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations. Additionally, you will have: Completed an archaeological field school. Completed a BA, BS, or MA in anthropology, archaeology, history, geoarchaeology, or cultural resource management. 5 years of experience in cultural resource management/archaeology, preferably in California, including: Archaeological Field Survey Extended Phase I Presence/Absence Testing Report Writing (primary author) Native American Consultation Historical Groups Consultation Archival Research GPS/GIS data collection and mapping Strong understanding of CEQA, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and NEPA Experience with public works projects, transportation projects, and/or the Caltrans Section 106 process, is preferred. What You Will Do: Conducting literature research and record searches Coordinating Native American consultation Leading archaeological field surveys and preparing site documentation Conducting archaeological excavation (testing and data recovery) Writing cultural reports including, but not limited to, Caltrans-formatted cultural reports, as primary author Writing the cultural sections of CEQA/NEPA environmental documents Working with clients, regulatory authorities, and subconsultants Assisting with the development and implementation of mitigation and monitoring reporting programs Developing creative solutions to avoid impacts to cultural resources FLSA Status: Full-Time Exempt Compensation: Competitive salary ranging from $80,000 - $130,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
