Archaeology Field Director Reports to: Cultural Resources Department Manager ______________________________________________________________________ Job Summary The Markosky Engineering Group, Inc. is accepting resumes for a full-time, permanent Archaeology Field Director. The Archaeology Field Director will oversee and provide leadership and technical guidance to the Archaeological Field Crew. In addition, the successful candidate will manage the quality and accuracy of all field documentation, will perform archaeological duties in the field and occasionally in the lab. This position will work in close coordination with Archaeological Principal Investigators and will report directly to the Cultural Resources Department Manager. Responsibilities ? Regularly conduct archaeological duties in the field and occasionally in the lab. ? Oversee the completion of archaeological field investigations under the oversight of Archaeology Principal Investigators. ? Conduct Phase I, II, or III archaeological field surveys that include the preparation of detailed notes, forms, logs, mapping, GPS data, and photographs. ? Conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC reviews) of all paperwork and documentation developed in the field. ? Manage and direct field methods developed in coordination with the Principal Investigator. ? Work with the staff geomorphologist when needed, apply the results of geomorphological survey during the archaeological survey, and be able to identify natural and fill stratigraphy data when geomorphological data is not previously available. ? Must be willing to work with and oversee a field supervisor when available on selected projects. ? Oversee archaeological field members of variable crew sizes. ? Complete field investigations independently for small projects when a crew is not available. ? Provide leadership and technical guidance to members of the field team. ? Act as the Field Safety Officer, responsible for facilitating tailgate safety discussions and records, as well as maintaining and providing planning information for emergency medical evacuations. ? Must maintain crew productivity. ? Complete artifact analyses and various tasks associated with lab work and curation in the archaeology labs when fieldwork is not ongoing. ? Properly maintain archaeology equipment. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities ? Adept with the use of GPS units and survey equipment. ? Sufficient knowledge of equipment and archaeological methods to clearly and effectively train the field crew. ? Must be able to recognize historic and pre-contact artifacts when conducting fieldwork. ? Excellent communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail. ? Must possess a positive attitude and professional demeanor with the ability to work well with others. Education/Experience Requirements ? Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, or in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology. ? Must show an archaeological field school conducted in North America as part of their training. ? Archaeological coursework focused on North American archaeology is preferable. ? Minimum of five (5) years of experience leading crews as a field supervisor, crew chief, or similar capacity. ? Minimum of five (7) years of experience conducting archaeological fieldwork. ? Preferably has varied experience among different industries, including energy clients, transportation agencies, and/or federal agencies. General Requirements ? The Cultural Resource Specialist will work as part of the Restoration Team in the Habitat Protection & Restoration Program (HP&R). BCI’s cultural resource inventories also include block and linear pedestrian surveys of areas selected for wildlife habitat improvement and restoration projects. This position will also assist with other project duties, including data and photo organization, map production, conducting research, and other tasks. Your Impact Conducting field and desktop archeology investigations and preparing reports. Scheduling, managing, and conducting fieldwork and documentation associated with archaeological projects for a variety of clients throughout the southwestern United States. Responsible for contributing to the development of various levels of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)-compliant documentation. Working collaboratively with a variety of project teams and clients in the public and private sectors and handling concurrent assignments. Working with federal and state agencies to develop and implement Programmatic Agreements Will travel throughout the southwestern United States. Approximately 30% overnight travel. Who You Are Required Qualifications BA/BS degree (MS/MA preferred) in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field. 3 - 5 + years of professional level experience researching, analyzing, developing and managing archaeological and historic preservation plans, staff, and resources. Meet Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology to perform duties for NHPA Section 106 and NEPA compliance. Ability to be added to archaeological permits on state, federal, and tribal lands in the U.S. Southwest. 3 + years experience working with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Working knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 compliance, and general archeological practices is required. Knowledge of the State Historic Preservation Act (A.R.S. § 41-861 et seq), and the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. § 41-841 et seq), Title 37, Public Land statutes, and ASLD Administrative Rules and Regulations. Experience working on local, state, and federal projects. Knowledge of Southwestern archaeology, anthropology, history and historic preservation. Ability to analyze technical reports for accurate information regarding cultural resources, legal descriptions, and land ownership. Ability to apply methods, techniques and practices used to direct archaeological and historic site assessment and mitigation programs. Ability to research, analyze, develop, and manage archaeological and historic preservation plans and resources. Ability to coordinate archaeological mitigation measures for the preservation of cultural resources through avoidance or recovery of significant archaeological materials. Must be detail oriented and have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, and must be technologically proficient including experience with databases and field data collection programs (Excel, AZSITE, NMCRIS, Access, ArcGIS Field maps preferred). OR/WA Arch Field Techs (temporary full-time positions, starting at $22/hour) Harris Environmental Group
Harris Environmental Group (HEG) is seeking four Archaeological Field Technicians for two large cultural resources survey projects in Oregon and Washington. (The projects will be managed from our Portland, Oregon office, but technicians will be working on-site for the projects and can be located within reasonable travel distance anywhere in Oregon or Washington state.) Field Technicians are responsible for assisting the field supervisor in identifying and recording cultural resources in the field. This includes performing pedestrian survey, excavating shovel test probes, identifying and documenting cultural materials (artifacts and features), filling out appropriate site forms and monitoring logs, site/artifact photography, and GPS-based data collection. Pay range for this position starts at $22/hour and is dependent on experience and education. The projects will primarily operate on an 8 days on/6 days off schedule (Thursday- Thursday). Per Diem and single occupancy lodging is provided for out-of-town work that requires overnight or longer duration stays. Drive time to and from the project area is paid, as well as per diem. Position Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field (equivalent experience will also be considered) Accredited field school or previous archaeological experience highly preferred. Six months of supervised experience in cultural resource management pedestrian survey. Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in rugged terrain, and remote locations. Ability to travel out of town for work on project sites in the Northwest (including field sessions of eight days working/six days off schedules) Familiarity with Garmin and Trimble (Terrasync) GPS devices. Experience identifying and documenting the historical and pre-contact material culture of eastern Washington and Oregon.
