Ethnoscience, Inc. is a cultural resource management firm established in 1980 and based in Billings, Montana. We are seeking a staff archaeologist for field work primarily in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The position is a permanent, full-time, salaried position.

Fieldwork:

-Single occupancy rooms on most projects, which is 99.99 % of the time. There have been times in the past during periods such as hunting season where motel rooms are in short supply and we have had to double up on the motel rooms, but those events are rare.

?

-The per diem paid for all projects is no-receipts per diem of $60.00/day and is paid in cash at the beginning of each work session.

?

-On Montana state highway projects, the n0-receipts cash per diem paid for 1st and last days is $51 per day, otherwise it is $60.00/day in between the 1st and last days.

-Most longer projects tend to be 10 days on and 4 days off.

?

-Between February and April/May 2025 there will be historical research projects to be completed that will involve deed record searches and trips to the Montana Historical Society archives and local historical societies.

-A survey/testing project will start in early June 2025 and will be 6 days on and 1 day off. Overtime will be paid for the supervisor’s position at a rate of $40.50/hour. The number of overtime hours will vary week by week. Motel lodging will be provided on days off. The length of this project has not been determined yet.

-A monitoring project will start in early June 2025 and is anticipated to last from 2 to 10 weeks and will be 5 days on and 2 days off. Overtime of up to 10 hours per week will be paid for the supervisor’s position at a rate of $40.50/hour. Motel lodging will be provided on days off.

-Several of our projects in 2025 will involve Tribal Cultural Specialists from one or more of the 12 tribes in Montana. These TCSes will provide their worldview of archaeological sites and Traditional Cultural Properties encountered on the various cultural resource surveys we have scheduled. This is a full-time permanent position that reports to the ECS’ southern Colorado headquarters. Candidate?MUST have experience in the Southwest. Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree (preferred) in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related degree AND 10 years of field experience that includes 2 years of field experience in Southwest.
  • Meets the qualifications to hold permits in California, Colorado, New Mexico, and/or Wyoming.

A Cultural Resources Specialist position is available with CEMML at Bellows Air Force Station on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii.

The Cultural Resources Specialist position will support cultural resource compliance activities, prepare and evaluate National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 undertakings and documentation, coordinate and attend stakeholder meetings, and recommend cultural resource and compliance management activities to Command to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as Department of Defense policies and procedures. A high degree of analytic knowledge, initiative, and resourcefulness; proven leadership skills and team-building capabilities; and excellent oral and written communication skills are critical to success in this position.

The position includes a combination of office and field activities involving execution and oversight of cultural resources support tasks, including but not limited to, identifying, documenting, monitoring, and protecting cultural resources; preparing information and analysis in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and other historic preservation and environmental laws; managing cultural resources artifacts, records, and curation facility, in addition to geographic information; participating in historical research efforts; preparing and distributing material and assisting with consultation efforts; implementing treatment measures; developing and presenting outreach material; and facilitating safe public access to cultural resources.

Hawaiˊi is located 2,200 miles west of California and 4,000 miles east of Japan. Hawaiˊi offers endless opportunities for recreational and cultural activities, including camping, surfing, diving and snorkeling, hiking trails, museums, and parks.

Bellows AFS was initially established as Waimanalo Military Reservation in 1917, and later renamed Bellows Field, in honor of 2nd Lt. Franklin Barney Bellows, who was killed in action during World War I. This was also one of the sites involved in the December 9, 1941, attack. Bellows Field remained active throughout World War II and became a separate permanent military installation in 1948. In 1973, a portion of Bellows was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a site of archaeological significance with artifacts establishing this area as one of the oldest places of human habitation in the Hawaiian Islands. Ka’ena Point Space Force Station sits on a remote ridge 1,500 feet above Yokohama Bay. KPSFS began operations in 1958 as part of the nation’s first satellite reconnaissance program. Today, KPSFS supports more than 185 satellites, performing mission operations around the world.

PAY RATE

Annual salary range $72,000 - $95,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Relocation expenses may be available; conditions apply. This position qualifies for Hybrid work. Employees are expected to report in person/on-site on workdays.

Who You Are (Minimum Requirements):

We are seeking an individual with a minimum of 5?years’ experience who will be responsible for field surveys, recordation of archaeological resources, archival research, Native American Tribal Government consultation, resource evaluations, construction monitoring, and cultural report drafting needed to comply with both the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations. Additionally, you will have:

  • Completed an archaeological field school.
  • Completed a BA, BS, or MA in anthropology, archaeology, history, geoarchaeology, or cultural resource management.
  • 5 years of experience in cultural resource management/archaeology, preferably in California, including:
    • Archaeological Field Survey
    • Extended Phase I Presence/Absence Testing
    • Report Writing (primary author)
    • Native American Consultation
    • Historical Groups Consultation
    • Archival Research
    • GPS/GIS data collection and mapping
