Position Details

Insignia is seeking a part-time, on-call Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator to join our team. This role involves overseeing and directing cultural resource subcontractors, providing technical advice on cultural resource management, conducting technical reviews of reports, preparing cultural assessments for projects, facilitating Section 106 compliance, and performing additional activities to ensure regulatory compliance. California-based remote applicants are encouraged to apply. Insignia is open to a fully on-call as-needed arrangement or a set minimum number of hours.

Job Description

  • Provide expert advice on avoidance and minimization strategies related to the protection of cultural resources.
  • Ensure full regulatory compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and other regulations that protect cultural resources.
  • Conduct record searches and prepare reports on occasion.
  • Perform cultural resources site visits on limited occasions.
  • Oversee and direct subconsultant cultural resource firms.
  • Provide technical review of reports.
  • Interface with Native American tribes and organizations.
  • Interface with client cultural resource subject matter experts.

Requirements

This is a full-time position located in our Prairie du Sac office with fieldwork required in Wisconsin and surrounding states. Pine Country RC&D, in coordination with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) personnel is seeking an archaeologist to serve in SE Georgia. The archaeologists will be based out of Pine Country’s RC&D office in Soperton (near Macon; Vidalia; Statesboro).

This is a field position that works collaboratively with the NRCS state technical staff (in Athens) for the consultation process (Section 106). The selectee will serve as an Affiliate (contract) Archaeologist for Area 4 (Georgia’s SE Counties) and will be responsible for assistance to field personnel and resource technical teams for conservation, protection, and enhancement of cultural resources, that include Indigenous and Historic resources, encountered in all NRCS programs and activities. The selectee’s primary responsibility is for cultural resources associated with soil, water, plant, and related conservation concerns.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The duties and responsibilities of this archaeologist position, but are not limited to, the following:

Participates in archeological field surveys including but not limited to:

o???Pedestrian Surveys, involving walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts.

o???Phase 1A/1B Archaeological Surveys, involving intensive Shovel Test Pit investigations according to Georgia State Archaeological Standards (Grid pattern, 80cm depth, 30m apart).

Records data, captures images, and writes a detailed Archaeological Short Report to be sent to the NRCS GA State Archaeologist using Microsoft Office applications.

o???Must have knowledge and expertise with Microsoft Office applications and at least one major GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, etc.).

Uses tools and equipment common to archaeological functions.

Follows priorities based on NRCS needs for allocation of time and resources to best achieve annual goals of the cultural resource program for the assigned area of responsibility.

Communicates information and maintains working relationships with NRCS GA Area Conservationist and their staff, as well as with the NRCS GA State Archaeologist and the Technical Support Staff in the NRCS GA State Office.

Enters, retrieves, and compiles data into spreadsheets and online trackers to best expedite the Section 106 process for the NRCS Area.

Works with the NRCS Area Archaeologist on projects, sometimes working independently on digs with supervision from the NRCS GA State Resource Conservationist and in collaboration with the NRCS GA Area Conservationist and the NRCS GA State Archaeologist.

·?Provides recommendations for treatment of cultural resources to field personnel in the assigned area of responsibility.

·?Responsible for technical quality of cultural resource reviews for in the assigned area of responsibility.

·?Provides technical and administrative support for activities in the assigned area of responsibility for all aspects of the cultural resource program. Performs other duties such as environmental review and various reporting efforts as assigned.

HRA is seeking to increase our qualified pool of Archaeological Technicians for work in our Eugene, Portland, Missoula, Seattle, and Spokane offices. Successful candidates must either currently reside in or be planning to relocate to states in which we primarily operate (Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Idaho). Individuals interested in working for HRA for seasonal employment will be selected only from this pool.

Pay is $20.50–36.00 per hour, based on location, education, experience, and special skills. HRA reviews wages on an ongoing basis based on technician demonstrated skills and abilities.

The Archaeological Technician – Seasonal performs archaeological fieldwork, lab work, or related office work under the direction and supervision of an HRA staff archaeologist.

?

Preferred applicants approved for the pool must have (at minimum) a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and an archaeological field school. Extensive field experience will also be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree; enrolled students nearing graduation will also be considered. The field school should preferably be university-based and completed for academic credit and must entail at least 4+ weeks of intensive, hands-on education in archaeological excavation techniques resulting in learned skills such as digging and screening, artifact and feature identification, soil recordation, mapping, and documentation, etc. Demonstrated equivalent volunteer or professional experience will also be considered in lieu of a formal field school. Preferred applicants will also have professional experience working in the field, conducting analysis of research data, and contributing to research reports.

Required skills include the ability to effectively conduct research activities, conduct fieldwork using appropriate field techniques, develop and maintain positive relationships, balance work schedules and demands, provide and receive feedback, seek to resolve conflict through communication and collaboration, and use effective verbal and written communication to listen and communicate effectively.

Applicants must be proficient in the use of computer programs and database systems and have familiarity with the operations and use of cameras, GPS, and GIS equipment and software. Candidates should assume that most of their working hours will be spent in the field.

About the opportunity


SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Cultural Resources Field Technician to join our Pittsburgh, PA office and assist with cultural resources management projects. Our office is actively involved in supporting energy development throughout the region, ensuring compliance and preservation in line with sustainable development goals.

This is a temporary field-based position under the direction of a Staff Archaeologist, expected to last through December 20, 2024. Preference will be given to candidates located in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

The selected candidate will be required to pass client specific drug and alcohol screening.


What you will accomplish

  • Perform complete archaeological surveying and field testing
  • Conduct shovel test pits and excavation units
  • Execute data recovery and associated field recording

Education and Experience.?Candidates must have either a B.A. degree in anthropology, or a Master’s degree in archaeology or cultural resources management. In both cases, the candidate must have at least three years of experience working with California prehistoric or historic-aged resources and be able to identify prehistoric and historic artifacts. Certification by the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) is a plus, but not required. Candidates must also have a good understanding of culture history relevant to California.

  • Successful candidates must have a valid CA Driver’s License with a clean driving record and be comfortable working in strenuous hiking and harsh weather conditions.

The ideal candidate would be enthusiastic, highly motivated, attentive to fine details, well organized, and comfortable working remotely via cell phone app and email exchange. This candidate would be able to transport themselves to the work site and to Aspen’s office locations.
