Pine Country RC&D, in coordination with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) personnel is seeking an archaeologist to serve in SE Georgia. The archaeologists will be based out of Pine Country¡¯s RC&D office in Soperton (near Macon; Vidalia; Statesboro).

This is a field position that works collaboratively with the NRCS state technical staff (in Athens) for the consultation process (Section 106). The selectee will serve as an Affiliate (contract) Archaeologist for Area 4 (Georgia¡¯s SE Counties) and will be responsible for assistance to field personnel and resource technical teams for conservation, protection, and enhancement of cultural resources, that include Indigenous and Historic resources, encountered in all NRCS programs and activities. The selectee¡¯s primary responsibility is for cultural resources associated with soil, water, plant, and related conservation concerns.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The duties and responsibilities of this archaeologist position, but are not limited to, the following:

Participates in archeological field surveys including but not limited to:

o???Pedestrian Surveys, involving walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts.

o???Phase 1A/1B Archaeological Surveys, involving intensive Shovel Test Pit investigations according to Georgia State Archaeological Standards (Grid pattern, 80cm depth, 30m apart).

Records data, captures images, and writes a detailed Archaeological Short Report to be sent to the NRCS GA State Archaeologist using Microsoft Office applications.

o???Must have knowledge and expertise with Microsoft Office applications and at least one major GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, etc.).

Uses tools and equipment common to archaeological functions.

Follows priorities based on NRCS needs for allocation of time and resources to best achieve annual goals of the cultural resource program for the assigned area of responsibility.

Communicates information and maintains working relationships with NRCS GA Area Conservationist and their staff, as well as with the NRCS GA State Archaeologist and the Technical Support Staff in the NRCS GA State Office.

Enters, retrieves, and compiles data into spreadsheets and online trackers to best expedite the Section 106 process for the NRCS Area.

Works with the NRCS Area Archaeologist on projects, sometimes working independently on digs with supervision from the NRCS GA State Resource Conservationist and in collaboration with the NRCS GA Area Conservationist and the NRCS GA State Archaeologist.

¡¤?Provides recommendations for treatment of cultural resources to field personnel in the assigned area of responsibility.

¡¤?Responsible for technical quality of cultural resource reviews for in the assigned area of responsibility.

¡¤?Provides technical and administrative support for activities in the assigned area of responsibility for all aspects of the cultural resource program. Performs other duties such as environmental review and various reporting efforts as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:?Bachelor¡¯s Degree in?anthropology, or?archaeology?from an accredited university/college.?Understanding/familiarity of the laws behind archaeology, completing tasks designed to develop familiarity with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and entering inventory and site data into various geospatial databases is highly recommended.

EXTRA:?Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) is based on:?1) class standing, 2) grade-point average, or 3) honor society membership. Specific requirements are: 1) Class Standing: Upper third of graduating class based on completed courses; 2) Grade Point Average: a) 3.0 or higher as recorded on official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education; b) based on courses completed during the final full 2 years of curriculum.

EXTRA:?Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA), Registered Archaeologist (RA), or Secretary of the Interior (SOI) Qualified archaeologists are?not required but?will be awarded extra points in the hiring process.

EXPERIENCE:?Must have completed at LEAST one full field school or archaeological internship experience where you completed Phase 1A and Phase 1B Archaeological Investigations in North America, preferably in the Southeast. Must include a concise description of your accomplishments and the geographical location of the field school in your CV.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver¡¯s license for the type of vehicle(s) operated to perform the duties of this position. This will require the operation of a motor vehicle on both public and private roads during daylight hours and occasionally after dark.

?Must agree to and pass a background check.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

¡¤?Knowledge of archaeological and historical cultural resources in order to maintain liaison with the NRCS GA State Archaeologist

¡¤?Ability to evaluate the significance of archaeological, historical, and traditional cultural properties in order to provide guidance and assistance to field personnel in their area.

¡¤?Knowledge of federal and state statutes and national policies regarding cultural resource management, conservation, protection, and enhancement, including Section 106 regulations.

¡¤?Knowledge of the theory and methods of archaeological survey, excavation, documentation, mapping, data collection, research design, analysis, and field identification and preservation of cultural resources.

¡¤?Knowledge of archaeology in the assigned area of responsibility, including ethnography and ethnohistory of Native American groups.

¡¤?Ability to work and communicate with others in order to provide information and coordinate cultural resource activity.

¡¤?Knowledge of /or willingness to learn NRCS conservation practices and programs in order to effectively integrate cultural resources issues into a total resource management system.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work will involve both an office environment and a field environment. Field work requires?regular and recurring physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, crossing rivers and?creeks, excavating sampling sites and performing shovel tests, and walking across farmland,?rangeland, or forested terrain for periods of several hours' duration carrying loads of up to 20?pounds. Physical fitness and common-sense precautions typical for both office and field settings are required.

The work environment is variable, ranging from a traditional office setting to field work.??In the field, the environment varies depending on season and location.??Conditions may include extreme cold or heat, all forms of precipitation, as well as the possibility of hazardous flora and fauna; special protective measures may be required.??Experience working in these conditions, especially hot, humid climates is a MUST.?
