Archaeological Laboratory Director

Gray & Pape, Inc., has a position open for an Archaeological
Laboratory Director in their Cincinnati, Ohio, office. A B.A. in
Archaeology, Anthropology or related field is required, along with two
years of laboratory experience and a minimum of two additional years of
laboratory supervisory experience. Experience in the Midwest is
preferred.
The Laboratory Director will be responsible for overseeing and managing
all operations of the laboratory, including the processing, cataloging,
analysis, reporting, and curation of artifacts; supervising laboratory
personnel; managing and developing appropriate database applications;
and
managing the collaboration between lab facilities and personnel in the
Cincinnati and Richmond, VA, offices.

This person must be able to demonstrate ability to work
effectively within constraints of project schedules and budgets.
Essential
duties will include conducting and/or scheduling the catalog and
inventory
of artifacts, historic and prehistoric; conducting or managing the
analysis of artifacts; writing the results of the analysis for inclusion

in project reports; supervising all personnel assigned to laboratory
duties; and integrating laboratory responsibilities into project
schedules
and products.

Supervisory skills, communication skills, and an ability to
effectively work in a project team are a must. Sophisticated database
and
word processing computer skills are essential. Material culture
analysis
and interpretation skills are also required. Other skills that will be
given serious consideration include floral/faunal analyzes, GIS, and
conservation of material culture.

STAFF AND FIELD ARCHAEOLOGISTS


Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA), is a company of cultural
resource and historical consultants based in Montana, with offices in
Missoula, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Since 1974, HRA has undertaken
projects for public and private clients in various regions. Archaeologists
in the Seattle and Missoula offices work in the Pacific Northwest, Northern
Rocky Mountains, and other areas. HRA seeks several archaeologists with
experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) in the Northwest/Northern
Rocky Mountains, for projects in the Seattle and Missoula offices. These
positions include approximately three staff archaeologists, two field crew
supervisors, and several field and laboratory crew members. Work starts in
January 2000.

Staff Archaeologists. One staff archaeologist is needed in HRA's Missoula
office and two in the Seattle office. The staff archaeologists would work
full-time and on contract for six months, with the possibility of converting
to regular, full-time positions. Starting salary will be appropriate to a
mid-level or junior-level, depending on qualifications and experience.
Benefits include holidays, sick leave, vacation, and health and disability
insurance.

Responsibilities include conducting background research, survey and
excavation fieldwork, and laboratory analysis; writing short reports or
portions of large reports; and coordinating with other HRA staff members.
Work tasks may involve determinations of significance, evaluation of
impacts, and design of mitigation measures. This work can include all types
of cultural resources, not just prehistoric archaeological sites. Skills
include working independently, on teams, and being able to serve as a field
crew supervisor. Periodic travel, especially for fieldwork, will be
required. Field sessions often involve 10 consecutive work days separated
by 4 days off.

Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree (this is
required for
the Missoula office position) in archaeology and two years of experience in
CRM, preferably involving Section 106 compliance projects in the
Northwest/Northern Rocky Mountains. Applicants must demonstrate ability and
experience in research, survey, excavation, analysis, and writing; have good
interpersonal and communication skills; and be willing to travel often.
Familiarity with software such as MS Word, Access, Excel, and graphics
programs is helpful.

Crew Supervisors. Two crew supervisors are needed for the Seattle office
for six-month contracts. This position supervises crew members in the
performance of archaeological survey, excavation, or laboratory work;
collects and organizes field data; coordinates crew equipment, supplies, and
logistics. Qualifications include a B.A. degree in Anthropology/Archaeology
or related discipline; three years of experience in archaeological
fieldwork; knowledge of field methods and ability to conduct fieldwork
effectively; good leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills;
familiarity with computer word processing and data base systems; physical
ability to conduct fieldwork under various environmental conditions; and
willingness to travel often. Wages and any benefits will depend on
qualifications and contract needs.

Field/Lab Crew Members. Several field/lab crew members are needed for
Seattle and Missoula office projects. This position performs various tasks
on survey and excavation crews. Qualifications include a B.A. degree in
Anthropology/Archaeology or related discipline; one year of experience in
archaeological fieldwork; knowledge of field methods; interpersonal and
communications skills; ability to operate photographic equipment;
familiarity with computer word processing and data base systems; physical

PROJECT ARCHAEOLOGIST
GENERAL CONTRACTS PROGRAM

Position: Project Archaeologist, General Contracts Program (GCP), Office of
the State Archaeologist. This is a full-time, 100 percent, benefited
appointment at the Research Assistant III level at the University of Iowa.

Basic Responsibilities: Conduct archaeological investigations for Phase I,
II, and III survey, site testing, and data recovery undertakings for local
and state units of government; federal agencies; and private sector
clients. Project Archaeologists report to and coordinate activities with
the GCP Director but are responsible for the day-to-day organization and
timely execution of field investigations, laboratory analyses, and report
preparation. Applicants must be familiar with Section 106 legislation and
be able to independently prepare high quality reports with the goal of
determining site eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places
for federal agency and SHPO review. The work primarily involves projects in
Iowa although the potential exists for project work in Missouri, Illinois,
Wisconsin, and Minnesota (typically within a 6 hour radius of Iowa City).
Extensive travel during the week required; weekend overnight stays away
from Iowa City are rare.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet or exceed the minimum
professional qualifications defined by the Secretary of the Interior's
Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36CFR61) including a
graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
(M.A./M.S. required, Ph.D. a plus); at least one year of post-graduate
degree supervisory experience in Plains/Midwest archaeology; demonstrated
ability to carry research (field, lab, and reporting) to completion in a
timely and high quality manner; experience directing archaeological crews
up to 12 persons in size; and ability to work effectively in a diverse
environment.

Desired Qualifications: Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
Experience with Word, Excel, Access, ArcView GIS, and CorelDRAW computer
applications on PC-based platforms. Previous experience with Iowa cultural
resource management projects. Individuals with experience in lithic
analysis, geoarchaeology, or faunal analysis are especially encouraged to
apply, although other specialties will be considered. Previous experience
in contract administration, marketing, agency or tribal consultation,
supervising field schools, other teaching, or museum-related curation work
not required but considered a plus.

This is a full-time University of Iowa Professional and Scientific position
in a great work environment with an excellent benefits package (five weeks

estimated base full-time salary of $30,290 to $35,248 depending on

MAJOR DUTIES: At the full performance level the incumbent of this
position is
responsible for the inventory, evaluation, and advice on cultural
resource
management, including determination of effects of projects on cultural
resources and recommends mit
igation. This includes providing advice on identification and
management of
cultural resources; designing inventory strategies as part of the land
use
planning process; organizing, supervising, or directly performing
inventory of
areas; reviews archeol
ogical reports; determines eligibility of historical properties for the
National Register of Historic Places; provides cultural resource
management
orientation; interprets cultural resources; and develops contract
specifications for cultural resource wo
rk and acts as a Contracting Officers Representative or inspector on
these
contracts.

QUALIFICATION REQUIRED: Applicants must meet qualification requirements

specified in the Office of Personnel Management's Qualification
Standards
Handbook for the 0193 series at the GS-05 or GS-07 level. This handbook
can
be found in any Federal gover
nment personnel office or on-line at www.opm.gov/qualifications.

Specifically qualifications are:

A. 1. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree: that included three

semester hours each in the following course areas: History of
archeology;
Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa;

Regional archeology, archeologic
al cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major
geographical
area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for
professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods
include,
but are not limited to, typo
logy, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating,
and
analytical techniques); and Archeological field school, to provide a
basic
understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design

implementation, field preserva
tion techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field
work.
AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology,
or
cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology;

ental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition);
and/or

2. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in a related

Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough

knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional
archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field
experience, which may include that gained i
n an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a

combination of professional experience in archeological survey,
excavation,
laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants
with
such field experience should,
after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade
archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief,
directing
the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger
archeological
project.

Duty Location: 1 vacancy at Milford, Pennsylvania

This position is a full-time TERM position, not-to-exceed two years, on
the staff of the USDA Forest Service Northeastern Area's, State and
Private Forestry (NA) field office, located at the Grey Towers National
Historic Landmark, in Milford, Pennsylvania.

Major Duties:
The person in this position will have assignments that include the
protection and analysis of the cultural resources of a National Historic
Landmark, Grey Towers, during a major restoration/renovation program.
The incumbent is expected to perform work tasks such as cultural
resource surveys in the Delaware Valley area of Northeast Pennsylvania,
completing surveys to identify cultural resources in the path of
construction in the Grey Towers gardens, and to operate as the sole
professional archeologist at Grey Towers with direct contacts to the
Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission and the Advisory Council for
Historic Preservation for cultural resource compliance. The work
requires the incumbent to interpret available data in terms of the
variables involved and to extend and modify procedures to resolve
complex issues. The purpose of the work is to plan,carry out,and provide
advice to the Grey Towers Site Manager,including developing a Landmark
program for cultural resources management and assisting with policy
formulation, developing immediate and long range objectives, planning
for integration with resource activities, and in the establishment of
archeology priorities.

Qualifications Required:
In order to qualify for this position, all applicants must have
successfully completed both the following Basic Requirement and the
Specialized Requirement.

Basic Requirement: A degree in Archeology which includes three semester
hours in each of the following course areas: (1) History of Archeology;
(2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or
Africa; (3) Regional archeology, archeology cultures, or sites in a
specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or
develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional
development; (4) Theory and methods of archeology, and (5) Archeology
Field School - to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and
practical approaches to research design implementation/field
preservation techniques/report preparation by participation in actual
field work - AND - six semester hours of related course work in
geography/geology/cultural geography; history/historiography/historical
archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing, and/or surveying
- AND - archeological field school.

Specialized Requirement:
After meeting the above Basic Requirement, to then qualify at the GS-11
grade level, it is necessary to have 3 full years of progressively
higher level graduate education or a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree
- OR - have one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to
the GS-09 grade level. Specialized experience is considered to be
experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular
knowledges,skills,and abilities to perform successfully the duties of
the position and which is typically in, or related to, the work of the
position to be filled.

To qualify based on education, submit copy of transcript or list of
courses
with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
