What you will accomplish


  • Conducts fieldwork under the supervision of the Field Director, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensures quality and completeness of data collected.
  • Communicates regularly with their supervisor to ensure that a project’s budgetary and timetable needs are met.
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • In coordination with their supervisor, assists with data QAQC and report writing and production effort.
  • Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Work closely with the Cultural Resource Team Lead as well as project managers, directors, and leaders throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherences to its mission, vision, and values

Experience and qualifications for success


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • 1 year of experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports preferred.
  • Experience leading crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions and agencies preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and to work well with others as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to use industry standard word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical reports
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Trimble GPS, ArcPad/Terrasync, Android devices, and digital field data collection is preferred
  • Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Field Crew Chief

The seeks a full-time field archaeologist to serve as crew chief to support the Principal Investigators on a colonial period Massachusetts excavation from June to early November. Housing may be offered for a strong non-local candidate. We plan to hire for this position as soon as possible.

Duties:

  • Open and close archaeological site five to six days a week (some flexibility in workdays and hours possible).
  • Manage and train a small crew of students and volunteers.
  • Lead excavations when P.I.s are not on site.
  • Carefully document the excavation via field notes, photography, mapping, etc.
  • Other related archaeological and organizational tasks.

Qualifications:

  • MA+ or Enrollment in a PhD or MA program.

About the Bradstreet Project:

The Bradstreet Project, located in North Andover, MA and established in 2019, has re-discovered the two 17th?century homes of foundational American poet Anne Bradstreet and her husband Simon Bradstreet (later governor of Massachusetts). After using dendrochronology to positively identify the still-standing partial remnants of the Bradstreet’s 1667/1668 home, the project set its sights on locating the archaeological remains of their earlier home that was memorialized in Anne’s poem?. Succeeding in this mission in the fall of 2023, excavations will continue in 2024 to further document the site. Learn more about our research from our conversation with the .

POSTION SUMMARY

Multiple Project Archaeologist/Field Director positions are available at Schofield Barracks and Pohakuloa Training Area, and involve a combination of office and field activities. This position functions as part of a team to support the Army’s cultural resources management and compliance tasks.? The Archaeological Collections Manager position is duty-stationed at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) and functions as part of a team to support the Army’s cultural resources management and compliance tasks.? Hawaiˊi is located 2,200 miles west of California and 4,000 miles east of Japan. Hawaiˊi offers endless opportunities for recreational and cultural activities, including camping, surfing, diving and snorkeling, hiking trails, museums, and parks.

Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawaii in the Saddle region between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and the Hualalai Volcanic Mountains. It extends up the lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet in elevation and to about 9,000 feet on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo (pop. 50,000) on the east coast and Kawaihae Harbor to the west with approximately 50 minute commute times. PTA is the largest DoD installation in Hawaii. USAG-HI provides installation management service and support for three Army installations on Hawaii Island including PTA, Kilauea Military Camp, and Kawaihae Harbor.

Schofield Barracks is located on the Island of Oahu, nestled at the foot of the Waianae Mountain range and is approximately 18 miles north of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Title – Field Archeologist
Location: West Mojave Desert

Nonprofit organizations requires a part-time Field Archeological (average 30 hours per week) to assist with off-highway vehicle restoration projects on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the West Mojave Desert.

Friends of Jawbone (FOJ) and Friends of El Mirage (FOEM) are non-profit organizations in support of off-highway vehicle recreation in the West Mojave Desert. Among our activities are restoration projects on public lands managed by the BLM. Each year we restore 20-30 miles of motorized routes that are designated closed, with current projects in the Jawbone, Rand Mountains, El Paso Mountains, El Mirage, and Stoddard Valley regions. Rate of pay is based upon experience.

Responsibilities Include:

? Self-navigating backcountry roads to specific proposed restoration worksites; vehicle provided
? Perform cultural clearance surveys
? Report and coordinate results to BLM cultural staff
? Ability to work independently but as a member of a team

SWCA is seeking an?Assistant Project Manager/Data Manager?– Cultural Resources?to support the Great Basin geography. Under the supervision of a Project Manager, an Assistant Project Manager/Data Manager – Cultural Resources performs field and office tasks while working with and supervising crew members. This is a regular (with benefits), hourly position that will report to a Project Manager.? The position will be based in Salt Lake City, UT, but remote locations in Utah and Idaho will also be considered for highly qualified candidates. If remote, the candidate should be willing to travel to the Salt Lake City office up to 25% of the time, for laboratory and curation needs.

What you will accomplish

  • Manage Salt Lake City’s internal databases and manage the Salt Lake City agency permits
    • Responsible for tracking and revising all archaeological and curation permits/agreements
    • Responsible for coordinating staff resume updates for permit renewals and modifications
  • Mentor and train newer employees on working on database and cultural resource reports
  • Work independently to manage and resolve database issues with SWCA’s Technology Solutions Team
  • Ensures?that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are ready for fieldwork.
  • Supervises staff, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensures quality and completeness of data collected.? More specifically:
    • Interviewing, selecting and onboarding new hires
    • Providing direction, training, coaching, performance management and feedback to direct-line supervisees, as well as all field crew members while under deployment
    • Provide corrective actions with staff members, working with HR as needed on discipline and/or discharge
    • Complete field skills assessments on all crew members, providing feedback to ensure team members are learning and advancing skills while work is being performed on time and on budget
    • Complete performance reviews with regular status supervisees, ensuring employee engagement is high and career development plans are actioned
    • Participate with Project Managers, Team Leads and Program Director on overall talent management of the Cultural Resources Program including evaluating staffing levels, scheduling, retaining/continuing/exiting employees, assigning work, determining promotional/status opportunities, making compensation decisions, etc.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project Managers,?Associate Project Managers, and field crews?to ensure that a project’s budgetary and timetable needs are met.
    • Provide quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) between fieldwork and reporting tasks
    • Provide feedback on QA/QC to field crews and project managers
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
    • Contribute to SWCA’s technical programs and suggest improvements to the Salt Lake and SWCA programs
  • In coordination with the project manager and principal investigators to?organize report writing and production effort and prepare technical reports.
  • Supervise all lab work to ensure that the project goals, schedule, and correct curation methods are being met in coordination with the Project Managers, Principal Investigators, and Program Director.
    • Complete QA/QC tasks for artifacts collected from the field
    • Coordinate laboratory data entry following fieldwork.
    • Track and order lab equipment. Ensure that equipment is maintained properly. Assist with management of field equipment as necessary.
    • Ensure that samples for out-of-house analysis are properly prepared. Track and follow up on the status of all samples sent out for analysis.
    • Coordinate regular revisions to SLC CR lab procedures materials (artifact analysis guides, curation instructions, etc.).
    • Coordinate schedule for use of the lab space between natural resources and cultural resources staff.
  • Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.


Experience and qualifications for success

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in cultural resources management on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year?of experience in laboratory methods and/or artifact analysis is preferred. Hands-on experience with artifact types common to the Great Basin and Intermountain West is also preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of databases, as well as Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability is required. Management or leadership experience in any aspect of cultural resource management is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Understands or has a willingness to learn agency-specific permitting guidelines and repository-specific curation guidelines.
  • Ability to multi-task and retain good organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Adapt rapidly to changes in project needs, agency requests, etc.
  • Able to prioritize workloads and meet schedules.
  • Continuously and proactively participate in improving the program through initiatives and operational tools.
  • Experience with implementing the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Sections 106 and 110, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) permitting processes is preferred.

ARCHEOLOGY CREW - DEVIL'S POSTPILE NATIONAL MONUMENT - MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIFORNIA

 

, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two and half decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or advancing their academic standing. In partnership with Devils Postpile National Monument (DEPO), GBI seeks an Archaeology crew.?

The NPS is responsible for protecting and managing over 420 individual “units”, including 63 National Parks, 74 National Historic Sites, and other designated areas such as battlefields, monuments, nature preserves, and more.

The project will begin in June conducting background research and developing the technical approach for the project. Once the park opens, the crew will serve as the on-site park archeologist.?
Duties include conducting archeological site assessments, drafting determinations of eligibility, supervising others in the field and lab, and providing archeological site monitoring as needed to accomplish project goals.?


Additional Duties:?

  • Research and compile information on history of work and content of known sites within DEPO.
  • Work closely with DEPO superintendent, YOSE CR staff, and other NPS staff as needed. Support the superintendent’s consultation with traditionally associated tribes during all phases of the project, providing opportunities as appropriate for project input, participation, and guidance from interested tribal members.
  • Develop and implement a work?plan for archeological evaluation of approximately ten (10) archeological sites known at the park, supervising others in the field and?lab work needed to accomplish goals.
  • Develop information to make Determinations of Eligibility under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) for each site and for the archaeological landscape.
  • Construct a technical report needed to document work performed, analysis of data collected, and support arguments of significance as appropriate. Follow standards for archeology as per the State of California and NPS-28. Work in this project will provide experience needed to meet qualifications under the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Archeology.


During the off-season (typically November-June), this position will focus on report writing and collections management.? Most off-season work may be done remotely from an off-site location, but travel to curation facilities or to the park offices may be required during the off-season to fulfill project goals and park needs.


The necessary skills are as follows:

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Good communication abilities, both written and oral.
  • An interest in cultural history and/or archeology and the management of information pertaining to these fields.
  • Database management and/or GIS knowledge and experience.
  • Cultural history research and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and complete archeological research (through to reporting)

The town of Mammoth Lakes is in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain range and hosts only 8,000 year-round residents. During peak seasons, this town hosts over 20,000 tourists. Devils Postpile National Monument is located approximately 12 miles from the town of Mammoth Lakes, a 30-minute drive with stunning views. Mammoth Lakes is a small resort town that attracts skiers in the winter, and activities like fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and climbing in the summer. Housing: On-site housing within Devils Postpile National Monument may be available for these positions during the peak season of June to October. Housing within the park consists of small, single furnished canvas tents. Electricity is available within these housing units, but other amenities are available in the Employee Facility. The Employee Facility includes a shared kitchen, restrooms and shower rooms. It also has a shared lounge area with satellite TV. Internet and television use satellite connections that may not have consistent reception. Canvas tents are located on plywood platforms and are furnished with bed(s) and electricity, but they have no water nor kitchen facilities.

Inexpensive camping options and off-site dormitory housing may also be available. No on-site park housing will be available outside of the peak season (typically June-October). However, off-site dormitory housing may be available for rent at Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining, or Mono City on a case-by-case basis.

Vehicle Access Restrictions: Reds Meadow Road is the only vehicle access to Devils Postpile National Monument.? This road is not maintained in winter and only opens when road conditions are safe for public travel.? Due to road construction Reds Meadow Road will not open for public access before June 7, 2024 and will only be open to the public Friday mornings at 9:00 AM until Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM. Reds Meadow Road will be closed 24 hours per day for construction work Sunday at 11:00 PM through Friday morning at 9:00 AM.? When the road is not open to the public, employee and park resident’s vehicles will only be permitted in and out of Reds Meadow twice a day in scheduled caravans that guide them through the construction The park is scheduled to close to the public on October 27, if snow storms or other weather events do not cause it to be closed for the season at an earlier date.? No in-park housing is available when the park is closed for the season. It is recommended that applicants bring their own personal vehicle but it is not required. Government vehicles are available to car-pool between the NPS offices in the town of Mammoth Lakes and the park.? Once in town, there is bus service within Mammoth Lakes, but there is much to explore in the surrounding area.
