Yuba City Map 23
Friends, Here is the final map of Yuba City. It has some problems due to gaps in my sources, so don't take it as gospel. It is only an approximation, and there is a mish-mash of eras regarding some of the track south of Bridge Street. My original sources were the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps provided by George. These were mixed with data from the 1957 WP Circular 167-E, and the 1970s WP TIP book (schematic track plans). There were several holes in my data, and I chose to follow the TIP book in the area off Plumas where the Mayflower warehouse was instead of the Rosenberg Brothers packing house. If I ever do a revision, I will put this back the way it was in 1957. I was unable to match all of the cold storage/packing houses in the yard to the Circular's listings, so they are left blank for now. There are some other industries on the Circular I couldn't find, including a Texaxo bulk plant. The spur into the Diamond Match lumber yard is conjecture. DM had two locations on either side of Bridge Street, the southern one served by the SP, so this is logical. All these picky changes proved too hard to edit, so I overlaid the information onto a blank redevelopment map I found on the Yuba City government's web site. Unfortunately, some of the streets were realigned thanks to new development south of Bridge Street. GRRR! So make of it what you will. It is not perfect, but at least helpful to understand the Yuba City industries, particularly south of the yard. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?

Sources for Reefers 7
I assume that SN often used WP reefers. Did they also sometimes deliver empty SP and ATSF reefers to their customers.

Yuba City ¡°B¡± Lead Mystery Turnouts 3
A question for all of you SN Archeologists. But first, a review of the two Yuba City Track and industry maps posted by Garth and myself. Garth¡¯s map shows the ¡°B¡± lead coming out of the yard down Plumas St. The first trailing point turnout, between ¡°A¡± and ¡°B¡± streets, leads into Mayflower and Galaxy Pipe. The next trailing point runs down. ¡°B¡± Street. The track then continues down Plumas Street ending at Del Monte Plant #14 which is on the corner of Plumas and ¡°C¡± Street. My map, Which I picked up from the SN yard office in 1977, shows the same, except it shows the¡±B¡± Lead as a facing point turnout. No other switches are shown on either map past ¡°B¡± Street And so begins the mystery. Here is a picture of 711 at plant #14. I believe the facing point turnout is the turnout for ¡°B¡± Street. Garth¡¯s map is correct. Did you notice the sun shining on the rails leading from under the box car? Two facing point Turnouts not indicated on either map. Another view looking down Plumas Street towards the yard. The two mystery turnouts to the right, I¡¯m standing on the track to plant #14 to the left. As you look farther away the barricade in the center of the construction zone is sitting on top of the ¡°B¡± Lead Turnout. Continue looking down Plumas Street at the end of the shiny section of pavement between the rails is the turnout to Mayflower and Galaxy Pipe. The question is what industries were served by these ¡°Mystery Turnouts¡±?

WP surviving car 3
It has been three years since I saw the last WP car, a white lettered insulated boxcar that was coming back from Mexico near Eagle Pass Texas. I thought all the cars were repainted or out of service. I tried to get a picture of a WP grain car I just saw in the UP yard in Lake Charles Louisiana today but it was already out of the yard when I turned a truck around on I10. It looked like the picture below but the lettering was spread out more. https://images.app.goo.gl/6LTFztHwSCk3oDyN7

16th Street Station Tour Photos 2024 in West Oakland 2
Hi Sacramento Northern fans! Though SP and not SN, I wanted to share some photos of a tour my group, Oakland Heritage Alliance, and I did yesterday of the 16th Street Station. A group called City Ventures has purchased it, with the intention of building housing around it, but leaving the station vacant. We are pushing them for a real plan to restore the station, hence the tour! In any case, I thought you all would enjoy these images. And if you feel so inclined, here is a petition we have put together to pressure the developer to actually RESTORE the station. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/bring-the-16th-street-station-back-to-life Best, Daniel Levy

List of WP/SN Industries 4
Friends, Today I stumbled onto a document hidden deep on the FRRS website. It is a 22-page spread sheet of WP/SN/TS industries. It is not as complete as the legendary Western Pacific Circular 167-E, but could be considered a supplement. It is particularly useful because it lists a number of customers who came after the Circular's supposed 1957 publication date. I am not sure who compiled the list, and cannot vouch for its completeness. It still looks like it could be useful The link is: https://www.wplives.org/wphistory_wp_documents/Industries_on_WP_ONLY_in_CA-NV-UT.pdf Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?

Photo Plan Pak SN 650-54? 3
Hi all, Do any of you happen to have a copy of the SN 650-54 "Photo Plan Pak" shown in the first attachment? If so, is there any way you could send me a readable scan (or even photo) of the page shown in the second attachment, with the actual plans of SN 654? I'm trying to determine the dimensions and details of the 3rd-rail shoe housings that were attached to the frames (not the trucks) of these locomotives that are seen so prominently in many photos before they were removed in the 1950s. Thanks in advance for any help! Cheers, James

SF-S 104 2
Friends, A friend in Italy sent me the attached image of San Francisco-Sacramento 104, aka SNRY 604. The photo was taken at the 40th & Shafter yard during the early 1920s. The SF-S existed for only nine years, from 1920 when it succeeded the OA&E until its merger with the SNRY in 1929. This was well before the golden age of railfan photography. I suspect from the "suits" posing on the motor that this was a professional photo taken at the behest of the company. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?

OA&E Badge on Ebay 2
Folks: Just now discovered an "OA&E Employe" badge on Ebay. Please be advised this is a reproduction item made in the 1990s. I traded for this badge at Winterail in the 1990s from the gentleman who had them manufactured. In no way am I insinuating the poster is trying to defraud anyone, just pointing out that it is a reproduction and not an authentic badge. ~Bill

Libby Cannery, Sacramento
Friends, In discussing the SN in Sacramento with Andrew Phillips, I did some scrounging around to find out more about the Libby, McNeill & Libby cannery. This massive factory was located on a triangle bounded by Alhambra Boulevard, Stockton Boulevard and R Street. It was served by the SP from R Street, and the SN by Alhambra. The SN had three spurs into the plant. There was a passing siding on Alhambra, I think to the north of the plant, which facilitated switching. I am not sure how the SN reached the plant, especially in later times, though it likely was via the X-Street line, and possibly via the R-Street line after X-Street was abandoned. You will note that the SN track in the street is not indicated. The Sanborn Map people did not include "trolley lines" after about 1910, no matter how much freight they moved. SP street trackage is shown. Some of the buildings are still there, now an office park, but much of the old plant was destroyed when the cannery closed in the 1980s. Please enjoy the map and photos. If you can contribute more information on the SN operations to the cannery, please share it with us. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?

SN 661 11
Friends, Recently I snapped up this photo of SN 661 in what appears to be dire straits. It appears to have been crunched (note the bowed frame above the right truck). The location is the Mulberry Shops in Chico (from the round vents above the doors). Putting a date on it is harder. The earliest dated photo I have in my collection of a motor with tiger stripes is on a Will Whittaker shot of sister 660 dated 13 August 1948. He noted on the negative sleeve that this was "new paint". Mulberry Shops closed in 1951, so this puts a three-year window on the photo, 1948-1951. Ah! What mysteries we find on our favorite line. ?Last SN freight west of Walnut Creek? 3
Wikipedia states that the last freight ran from Oakland to Lafayette on March 1, 1957. It also states that overhead wire and tracks were removed and the Shepherd Canyon tunnel sealed. My question is if any service continued, if only for a short time, to any points west of Walnut Creek, such as Lafayette and or Moraga. Wikipedia states that the following year (1958?), freight service only extended from Walnut Creek to Sacramento. This made me think that there was some service west of Walnut Creek from March 1957 until sometime in 1958.
