Yuba City ¡°B¡± Lead Mystery Turnouts
A question for all of you SN Archeologists.
?But first, a review of the two Yuba City Track and industry maps posted by Garth and myself. Garth¡¯s map shows the ¡°B¡± lead coming out of the yard down Plumas St. The first trailing point turnout, between ¡°A¡± and ¡°B¡± streets, leads into Mayflower and Galaxy Pipe. ?The next trailing point runs down. ¡°B¡± Street. ?The track then continues down Plumas Street ending at Del Monte Plant #14 which is on the corner of Plumas and ¡°C¡± Street. My map, Which I picked up from the SN yard office in 1977, shows the same, except it shows the¡±B¡± Lead as a facing point turnout. ?No other switches are shown on either map past ¡°B¡± Street And so begins the mystery. Here is a picture of 711 at plant #14. ?I believe the facing point turnout is the turnout for ¡°B¡± Street. ?Garth¡¯s map is correct. ?Did you notice the sun shining on the rails leading from under the box car? Two facing point Turnouts not indicated on either map. Another view looking down Plumas Street towards the yard. The two mystery turnouts to the right, I¡¯m standing on the track to plant #14 to the left. ?As you look farther away the barricade in the center of the construction zone is sitting on top of the ¡°B¡± Lead Turnout. ?Continue looking down Plumas Street at the end of the shiny section of pavement between the rails is the turnout to Mayflower and Galaxy Pipe. The question is what industries were served by these ¡°Mystery Turnouts¡±? |
Scott and friends, Wow! What a stumper. I was inclined to say that I made a colossal goof when I drew the map. I can't find any documentation in my stuff for the trailing point lead into B Street. But then we have Scott's photo of 711 which vindicates my map.? O.K. so let's think here for a second. WP 711 was transferred?to the SN in July of 1971, according to Strapac's roster in WESTERN PACIFIC DIESEL YEARS. That makes 1971 the earliest possible date on Scott's photo. Attached is a page from the WP TIP book, which is undated, but I take to be around 1975 showing the B Street track (Track B99) and the Del Monte spur (Track 318). This matches the clerk's map which Scott obtained in 1977, and reflects the final layout which is at variance with my map. That suggests that sometime between July 1971 and 1975-ish the switch was reversed. Since the Del Monte spur was a single track within their plant, the reversal would have simplified switching, allowing Del Monte cars to be stashed on B Street. As for the two mystery turnouts, perhaps we are looking at an earlier alignment of the Mayflower spur (Track 316) and Slakey Pipe (Track 317) which came off B99 through separate, but almost overlapping switches? Inquiring minds want to know. Garth Groff ?? On Thu, May 16, 2024 at 5:47?PM Scott Wiesemann via <swiesemann52=[email protected]> wrote: A question for all of you SN Archeologists. |
I would love to go visit Yuba City to familiarize myself with some of the track plan. It is been years. But I am a long ways away. On Fri, May 17, 2024 at 12:59 PM Garth Groff and Sally Sanford via <mallardlodge1000=[email protected]> wrote:
