Re: SN Bidwell observation platform colors
Hi Garth,
?
I've never (ever) forgotten anything I've written over the past 40 years. Yeah, right :-)
?
While we're on the subject, I wonder what happened to that exquisite model of the Sacramento that Don Olsen built. Any ideas as to its whereabouts?
?
Cheers,
?

Re: SN Bidwell observation platform colors
Friends, I get a big "duh" for missing that one. That said, SN On-line has been the property of the WPHS/FRRS for eight or so years, and I have forgotten a lot of what I wrote. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?? On Tue, Aug 27, 2024 at 9:35?PM rrmaven via <dan.shirleylee=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: SN Bidwell observation platform colors
Hi Dan and Garth,
?
Garth, did you forget your excellent article about Don Olsen's O scale model of the Sacramento? :-) In that article
?
?
you explained that after some detective work, Don found that the awning colors for the Sacramento were actually green and orange separated by white. Definitely not the colors I had been expecting based on B&W photos! I would assume that the awnings on the Bidwell were made from the same material. Unless we could say that the color rendering of the film WW used in that third photo you just posted would be able to distinguish between green and orange, in which case green on white seems like as good a choice as any.
?
Thanks again for writing that original article. It, and all of the other informative articles you wrote for the original site!
?
Cheers,
?

Re: SN Bidwell observation platform colors
Garth,
?
Thanks for the fast response and the pictures;? you confirmed what I suspected.
?
I plan to complete Bidwell in Sept and will include?
o? ?a drumhead sign by Tomar.
o? ?"wicker" chairs for the obs platform;? I found chairs that are close which will simulate
? ? ? wicker when painted.
o? ?a few seated figures?
o? ?correct trucks as shown in your pix
o? ?paint as per your note; I have some good color photos from the WRM
?
I have a 2nd hand 1005 which I will repower with a Stanton drive and add a sound
decoder in October if my recovery from heart surgery permits.
?
So, stay tuned for results.? ?

Thanks again

Re: SN Bidwell observation platform colors
Dan, Good questions. I don't know about the awnings. I suspect a pale green on white. You might check with the WRM. The attached color photo of 1005 might be a good guide, but I would use caution as I think the motor had been repainted by the BAERA at some point. As you can see, the body is Pullman green with a faded black tar paper roof, and black metal work, but the trucks are wrong. They should?be moss green. That is yours truly at the age of 12 hanging out the door. Tsk, tsk. Photo by my father, Glenn Groff. The two Will Whittaker shots from my collection should be helpful when compared with 1005. I would say pretty much everything on the platform was Pullman?green except the polished brass posts. Hope this helps. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?? Scott, Can you imagine trying to hand-lay those four crossings for a layout in HO scale? Just the thought is enough to make me want to model Sutter or something else simple. The accidental, but appropriately named, Diamond?Match facility would be to the left and behind where Will was standing. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?? Re: Yuba City Map
I hope it does stir the pot. I have a ton of fantastic pictures and documents that I want to share with everyone in hopes they start digging up and sharing with everyone. One I just found is the tower at the SP crossing at Live Oak. Awesome!

Bill, Thanks much. It may solve a mystery or two, but probably will provoke more. Yours Aye, Garth Groff ?? On Tue, Jul 2, 2024 at 12:16?PM Bill Shippen via <pitstopharold=[email protected]> wrote: I bought the slide. When I get it I'll post it along with my others of this excursion.? |
Re: Yuba City Map
Scott, I wish I had seen that photo, (Sigh!) but I rarely look at eBay these days. The Diamond Match spur in Yuba City remains a mystery to me. Did anybody on this board snag a copy of this photo that they could share here? Attached is a photo from my collection taken by Will Whittaker of that excursion. He dated the photo as 26 March 1960. It is the only photo of this excursion among the negatives I bought from Will, but I am sure there were others. A view of the trip at the Yuba City depot by Stan Snook is on page 84 of Jim Harrison's SACRAMENTO NORTHERN GALLERY, and there is a similar unattributed shot on page 362 of ?John Ryczkowski's?WESTERN PACIFIC PICTORIAL, but both are beyond the Diamond Match spur. ? Re: Yuba City Map
Garth ,
a photo taken around 1958 was just sold on ebay.? It shows SN 653 & WP 376, RDC, coming off of the Feather River Bridge into Yuba City.? They are? passing by the Diamond Match Companies retail lumber yard location shown on your map.? What is more surprising to me is the two main tracks that lead up to the eastbound block signal protecting the bridge.? Single track begins just east of the signal.? ? ? Scott ? |

Re: Sources for Reefers
Ken, Ah, that is a different kettle of fish. The WP joined Fruit Growers Express on 1 July 1967. WP operated FGE-painted cars with WP reporting marks, as well as having FGEX and other affiliate cars as frequent visitors. See Jim Eager's Western Pacific Color Guide to Freight and Passenger equipment, pages 54 and 56 for WP examples. I have a picture of an obviously repainted FGEX RBI as WP 96093, with odd plug doors offset to the left. I believe it dates to around 1976 when I was shooting mostly slides. I photographed honeydew melons being loaded and iced by truck at Woodland about 1967 or 1968. These were FHIX/FGE and affiliated WHIX/GN cars, the last time I ever saw iced refrigerators in service. Re: Sources for Reefers
When I hiired out in 1977, WP had FGEX reefer car service. FEGX or FGEX, I can't remeber which, but thwen UP came along in 1983? FGEX was kicked out and UPFE moved in to tracks 37 and 38, the reefer tracks in Stockton. On Mon, Jun 17, 2024 at 2:21?PM Bill Shippen via <pitstopharold=[email protected]> wrote: Hello All? |
Re: Sources for Reefers
Hello All?
Garth, SFRD mechanical reefers were common on the Chico Local in the early 1970s. They were used for outbound loads of high-end valued Almonds from Continental Nut Company which was at the end of the Vecino line besides the Esplanade. Many times as a kid I would see SFRD cars at CNCo until around the mid-1970s. ~Bill Shippen? |
