Re: Ports and hatches

The original opening port lights were probably Beckson. Screens and other parts are available. Installing the screens is a PITA.?

The hatches on my S32 are Bowmar.? If you search the list archives there should be quite a few threads on maintaining and replacing these hatches. ?

Phil & Andy, Depending on the thickness of my glass I may take you up on your generous offers and owe you guys a few beers. ?In your case Phil, I may consider investing in a micro-brewery.

Elizabeth & Andy, Do you mind indicating the cost of the frame powder coating? ?And, Elizabeth how long ago did you do the job, and how is it holding up?
?
Dave, ?Thanks for your insights as well. ?Your willing to share your considerable knowledge and experience is always appreciated

?
Also, does anyone have an opinion as to the width/thickness of the glass to frame caulk. ?As previously stated the existing caulk is around 3/8-1/2” sloping to the glass from the frame. ?It’s gray, frayed, and unsightly. ?I’d

Re: Cleaning out the closet

I don't think I have had the pleasure of communicating with you as of this post.? However, please allow me to give you some brief background.? I have recently purchased my 4th sailboat.? A 1985 Sabre 32.? Awesome boat!? ?I had prior this one a Catalina 30 (X wife got it 25 yrs ago) , a Catalina 36 (Katrina took it from me) and a Pearson 367 Cutter rig, (had to give her up to support my son in a private college prep school for ADHD / OCD and that was just the right thing to do at the time).? After owning 3 sailboats, even living in Mobile, AL, I've never been in the Gulf of Mexico, or Gulf of America now?? Ergo, my 4th boat.? I am retired, 70, and rapidly running out of time.? That's when I found this Sabre 32, named, "About Time" I thought, yea.? One more chance.....
?
I don't know if your cockpit table will fit a Sabre 32, don't see why not.? But I do know, they are not valued used at $100.00.? That, I thought, was a bit inappropriate an offer.? I don't see ANY new for less that around $700 to $1200 dollars.? I'm a retired musician living on social security.? I don't have $700 for a cockpit table, but I sure would relish one.?
?
My goal 25 plus years ago was to sail down to the Keyes or to the Dry Tortugas. I am going to achieve this goal, or die in route.? Regardless, a cock[it table sure would make life easier for me vs not having one. I am prepared to make any reasonable offer to secure this if you feel confident it will fit on my Sabre 32.? It looks as if it is brand new !!!
?
I will pay for UPS or USPS shipping and mail you a check in advance of shipment !? Please let me know what you had in mind for a mutually agreeable fair price for an old retired trumpet player.? I would be honored to install it on my boat, and toast you on the seas in route.? Please allow me to try to acquire this if at all possible.

Re: Rebedding old (aluminum frame) fixed ports

Hi Don, I'm in the middle of this project on my S38mkI.? I had my frames powdercoated silver and am reassembling them now.? On my early S38 the glass is 1/8" rather than 3/16".? The glazing for 1/8" glass is DR Laurence D753 rather than D752.? If your glass turns out to be 1/8" I should have enough leftover to send you some.? The glazing actually has seals on both side of the glass but the recommendation from Sabre is to trim away the outside part and put a bead of clear silicone on the outside.? That's today's project, then I'll be reinstalling with silpruf and butyl tape.

Edited

Here you go Don:
I have some of the CRL vinyl gasket left (3/16? 752), let me know how much you need, I'll send it to you.
I used clear LifeSeal to seal between the gasket, glazing and frame to cabin.
It's very messy, makes reassembly difficult, but I've been using it for (30+)years, has never leaked.
Please feel free to get back to me with any questions, I've done all 4 ports twice so I've already
made all the mistakes.

Re: Solar Panels on Bimini with Split Backstay

Cruising means you have plenty of time to think about weighty issues. This past week I noticed the Victron controllers keep track of the amount of power produced over a lifetime, this would be a good way to assess the overall impact of the radar pole and dome. The port panel on Second Star, th.e on most affected has produced 192kWh and the Starboard panel has produced 213kWh. That is an overall loss of about 10% due to the pole.?

The loss is not evenly distributed. Somedays, there is no loss or a trivial amount, on other days the loss is quite significant, with the Starboard panel producing twice as much as the port panel.

I used the windshield sealer because Butyl Tape was a challenge to find back when I did the ports some 20 years ago. (You really did deeply search the archives!). It worked well for as long as I owned the boat, however, I sold about 10 years ago.?

The color of the caulk for the outside doesn’t really matter, it is seal the gap between the glass, vinyl glazing, and frame. Not sure why Sabre cut the flange off the outside and caulked instead, it might have been an aesthetic reason. Anyway, it is probably a better solution than the vinyl flange. There is a Dow product (595?) that is similar to Silpruf. These silicone caulks are different from the usual marine silicone and HW store silicone.

David,

Just finished painting Skye S34mkII. 1 gallon does a nice job. I do race the boat so I wet-sand off 90% of what I just painted on and have a diver clean the bottom every week so the amount of paint is not critical. If you want more than one coat, 1-1/2 to 2 gallons is more than enough.

It depends on the air temp and humidity (it will determine my how fast it starts to skim in the pan or dry on the hull). On my S38MKII I’ve been able to do the whole bottom (Micron 66 - now discontinued) with a gallon and a half and sometimes it 2.25 gallons. I always buy three gallons so I’m prepared. This will be the first year with CSC.?

Good luck.
