Re: Rebedding old (aluminum frame) fixed ports

Hi Don, I'm in the middle of this project on my S38mkI.? I had my frames powdercoated silver and am reassembling them now.? On my early S38 the glass is 1/8" rather than 3/16".? The glazing for 1/8" glass is DR Laurence D753 rather than D752.? If your glass turns out to be 1/8" I should have enough leftover to send you some.? The glazing actually has seals on both side of the glass but the recommendation from Sabre is to trim away the outside part and put a bead of clear silicone on the outside.? That's today's project, then I'll be reinstalling with silpruf and butyl tape.

I would love to have your table on our S36. What do you think would be a fair price?

Edited

Here you go Don:
I have some of the CRL vinyl gasket left (3/16? 752), let me know how much you need, I'll send it to you.
I used clear LifeSeal to seal between the gasket, glazing and frame to cabin.
It's very messy, makes reassembly difficult, but I've been using it for (30+)years, has never leaked.
Please feel free to get back to me with any questions, I've done all 4 ports twice so I've already
made all the mistakes.

Re: Solar Panels on Bimini with Split Backstay

Cruising means you have plenty of time to think about weighty issues. This past week I noticed the Victron controllers keep track of the amount of power produced over a lifetime, this would be a good way to assess the overall impact of the radar pole and dome. The port panel on Second Star, th.e on most affected has produced 192kWh and the Starboard panel has produced 213kWh. That is an overall loss of about 10% due to the pole.?

The loss is not evenly distributed. Somedays, there is no loss or a trivial amount, on other days the loss is quite significant, with the Starboard panel producing twice as much as the port panel.

I used the windshield sealer because Butyl Tape was a challenge to find back when I did the ports some 20 years ago. (You really did deeply search the archives!). It worked well for as long as I owned the boat, however, I sold about 10 years ago.?

The color of the caulk for the outside doesn¡¯t really matter, it is seal the gap between the glass, vinyl glazing, and frame. Not sure why Sabre cut the flange off the outside and caulked instead, it might have been an aesthetic reason. Anyway, it is probably a better solution than the vinyl flange. There is a Dow product (595?) that is similar to Silpruf. These silicone caulks are different from the usual marine silicone and HW store silicone.

Re: Wetted surface

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

David,

Just finished painting Skye S34mkII. 1 gallon does a nice job. I do race the boat so I wet-sand off 90% of what I just painted on and have a diver clean the bottom every week so the amount of paint is not critical. If you want more than one coat, 1-1/2 to 2 gallons is more than enough.

Re: Wetted surface

It depends on the air temp and humidity (it will determine my how fast it starts to skim in the pan or dry on the hull). On my S38MKII I¡¯ve been able to do the whole bottom (Micron 66 - now discontinued) with a gallon and a half and sometimes it 2.25 gallons. I always buy three gallons so I¡¯m prepared. This will be the first year with CSC.?

Good luck.
