Sabre 38 Mk2 rod rigging open style turnbuckles
Hi All,
?
I just had my insurance survey. Glad to say all went well, except that the surveyor identified what looks like hairline cracks on the inside of one of the ¡°open style¡± cap shroud turnbuckles and a similar line on the inside of one of the lower shroud turnbuckles. My rigger says it is unlikely to be a crack on that style of turnbuckle body, ?but he hasn¡¯t seen it yet. Since I¡¯m going to take the boat to sea, I am willing to change them all out an I am looking at Hayn ?3/8¡±-24 x 5-1/2 ?and 1/2¡±- 20 x 6-1/2¡± bodies, but don¡¯t know if these have the correct threads for the rod rigging ends on a Sabre 38 Mk2. Does anyone know exactly what the normal thread pitch is??

Need more details on the configuration of the stainless steel weld-up pls ......? is it to be a full box structure with the bottom contoured to follow? closely the curvature of the bilge? Does it extend fully across the bilge, same as the original plywood step? How will the existing? cast aluminium step be held in place on top of the SS beam? Electrolysis considerations?
I'll be doing this repair next year on my 34/1 and am planning on using white oak. Tx

Rob's reference to composite panels as an alternative to wood or G10 piqued my interest in learning more about Coosa and their products.
?
I emailed them about the suitability of their products for mast step rebuilds and received a prompt informative reply.
Their advice was to work with an engineer to determine mast step box requirements and then investigate if using Coosa panels would be a satisfactory solution.
Bottom line, white oak and G10 have significantly higher compressive strength than Coosa Bluewater 32 Series, which is their strongest panel.
?
Google-search comparison of compression strength of flat panels:
Atlas Fibre G10.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?65,000 psi? wow!
Coosa Bluewater 32 Series? ? ?1,581 psi (as stated by Coosa)
Marine Plywood? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?~5,000 psi
White Oak? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 7,440 psi
?
?
So what do they say Coosa panels are good for ...?
Coosa boards are fantastic for all kinds or marine use- especially decking, transoms, hatch lids, etcetera based on their properties of no rot, no mildew, and being dimensionally stable.
?
Full Disclosure: I am simply sharing what I learned today about Coosa Composite panels. I have no affiliation with Coosa nor do I have an experience with their products.
?
Cheers!

I've been hoping to get the mast step rebuilt this spring, but time is just not on my side, so I've been in talks with my yard to do the work.? They have looked at the issue a few times and recommend rebuilding the step with 3/8th of an inch thick stainless steel welded together and attached to the bilge.? Basically, it would be a custom-built stainless steel box cut to fit and replace where the mast step sits now. ? I've never heard of the mast step being rebuilt this way, and I'm sure there must be a reason for it. Also, should this step be left hollow with stainless steel plates perpendicular to and connecting the long stringers with a large metal plate welded on top?? Or should there be more support, like white oak filling the hallow cavities between the plates directly under the mast step? ? ? ??

Re: Rear Chainplate Pitted 362
Hello,
?
Update on this thread. I talked to Glen at Sabre and he said they originally used Nautilus Marine Fabrication in Maine to make all the chainplates.
?
Contacted Nautilus and they said they can make new chainplates so I mailed them up yesterday.? They lost all the mechanical drawings they had on file of the chainplates in a big fire unfortunately.
?
Will let you know price and how it goes once completed.

I have a 20kg Ronca Vulcan on our S362 with 50ft of 3/8 chain and 200ft of triple braid.? I love the? anchor holding and (almost) never worry about it, but the storage on the bow roller is not good.? I ended up drilling a 5/16 hole through the shank and cross pin the anchor when it is not in use.? A bit of a pain, but I'm already committed to this hardware.

The issue isn¡¯t
a swivel which
we don¡¯t have.
The Spade has a
high arch in the
shank, if it
clears the
roller too
quickly the arch
comes back and
up and rubs
agains the
bottom of the
furler. If ?I
retrieve it
slowly, the
shackle end of

low and the arch
clears the

This allows

The issue isn¡¯t a swivel which we don¡¯t have. The Spade has a high arch in the shank, if it clears the roller too quickly the arch comes back and up and rubs agains the bottom of the furler. If ?I retrieve it slowly, the shackle end of the shank stays low and
the arch clears the furler. I could probably engineer something than would force the shank down sooner, just haven¡¯t gotten around to it. Over time I¡¯ve gotten better at slower retrievals. There have been other more pressing problems to deal with.

do you use a swivel? ?We do with a section of chain between the swivel and the anchor shank. ?This allows the swivel to work and not get side-loaded (the cause of most swivel failures). We too hit the bottom of the drum and am not sure how to remedy it other
than going very slowly when the anchor is close to being all the way up. The other complication is this is happening right after the anchor self-rights, so there is a lot going on at once. ?Full disclosure, we have a Rocna 25 (55lbs) not a Spade.

?We have a 44 lbs Spade on 140¡¯ chain and 150 feet of 8 plait. Have never had a problem setting the anchor, except in conditions that no anchor would set, shallow sand over limestone, sunken canvass, sunken plastic (2x), and deep thick weeds (a borrowed fisherman¡¯s
anchor worked). The only drawback is clearance under the roller furler, when launching and retrieving it sometimes hits the bottom of the drum.

This
season I¡¯m increasing my chain to 75¡¯ from 40¡¯ plus 250¡¯ of 5/8¡± nylon 8 plait for my 38 mkii in preparation for this summer¡¯s trip to Newfoundland with its deep anchorages and frequent windy conditions. I use a 15kg Rocna anchor which in its current configuration
has never failed to set or drag in conditions with gusts exceeding 35 kts.?
Also will have a snubber for shallow anchorages with small tidal swings. All chain seems unnecessary to me unless you¡¯re in coral infested waters. All that expensive weight in the bow for what purpose?

I have the 100.? No problems handling to date, 3 or 4 seasons including a Newfoundland trip.? I have a Muir VR1000 windlass that is a good windlass but not particularly heavy duty.? My previous was a Bruce #33.
Furler is a Furlex 204S new Spring 2023.? Photo below is previous Furlex Type B MkII.
Purchased boat in 2015.? Came with 100' 5/16 chain & 200' nylon 3 strand.? Nice setup.? Rarely put out less than 100' in Maine or Canada, so basically a built in snubber.? I was gratified to read Andy Schell of 59 North endorse this exact setup in, probably,
Sail mag sometime the last couple years.

Hi Dave Short, and or anyone with a 362 and a Spade Anchor..
?
Did you get the 100 (44 lbs.) or the 80 (33 lbs.)?
?
I think you may have said the 100, and was wondering if you have issues with handling it? My previous anchor was a Delta 33lb...
?
Also do you have all chain? I'm considering 150' of 5/16" with another 100' of rode. Like you we cruise Maine for most of the summer...here in Long Island Sound depths are shallow so don't need much in the way of scope.
?
In the past we had 40' of chain and another 200' of rode.
?
Thanks..
