question on 818 settings
2
I have a new Shari 3U set up and running. It¡¯s quite impressive and was very easy to set up. The next step here is configuring better audio settings. I have the recommended settings for the Allstar side but before changing levels there, are there recommended initial settings for the Shari radio itself? The 818-prog program asks for squelch, volume, enable pre-emphasis, enable high pass filter, and enable low pass filter. I looked through the documentation but didn¡¯t find any mention of those 818 settings. Can anyone share a pointer to a document or share recommended settings? Thanks. 73 Jim KY2D

USB connection
7
I am looking forward to receiving my SHARI. In the meantime, I have been thinking of ways to reduce the footprint of the rpi and the SHARI. My thought is to hardware 2 usb cables in place of the usb connectors and flip the board so it sits over the rpi. Has anyone done this or can think of a reason not to? Thanks.

Is it possible to know where one is on the list to purchase a Shari node? If so, how, or what does one do to obtain this information? TIA

COS LED mapping

Hello once again, I am following the COS LED instructions and have done what I thought was correct by writing the proper lines to each rpt.conf and simpleusb.conf areas. I must be missing something because the light does not come on...see attached images. Paul W4END

SHARI CW vs. Voice ID
2
Hello all, I am trying to go back to using CW as an ID instead of Voice as an ID. Can someone please walk me thru how to do that without having to reload the MicroSD card. From what I have read, and compared to my other nodes, it should already be transmitting CW for the ID....but it is definitely voice. Below is the lines from rpt.conf line 220+ ID SETTINGS ; ID recording files must have extension gsm, ulaw, pcm, ; or wav. No file extension is used. ; All ID recording files should be sampled at 8KH ;idrecording=/etc/asterisk/local/node-id ; Main ID voice ;idrecording=|iDE W4END/L ; Main ID CW ;idtalkover=|iDE W4END/L ; ID when signal present idrecording=/etc/asterisk/local/node-id

New Install Node 2064
I wanted to thank SHARI for a cool ASL hotspot. I group at the Yuma Hamfest was showing it off. I have it on a Pi2 running WB6NIL's ASL img. (allstalink.org) Install went easy. I needed to change the freq on the SHARI. Downloaded the shari-pixx-prog and install python-serial. Works great Thanks, David KE6UPI

[arm-allstar] Email from Allstar Folks
FYI, this may affect us all ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: "George via ARM-allstar" <arm-allstar@...> Date: Thu, May 14, 2020 at 8:36 PM Subject: [arm-allstar] Email from Allstar Folks To: ARM Allstar <arm-allstar@...> Cc: George <nj3h@...> Just received the message below from Allstar. Is their any impact to those on Hamvoip? Thanks, George, NJ3H Msg follows: This is Tim, WD6AWP one of the AllStarLink admins. We are going to decommission the old AllStar server. More on that later. For now, you need to make a simple change to one configuration file. On your node, please change the register line in /etc/asterisk/iax.conf to read: register = 50640:pppppp@... ;where pppppp is your node's password Please make this change asap. Once we decommission the old server your node will no longer be able connect to other nodes on the AllStar network unless you make the change. For more information please visit http://community.allstarlink.org (prefered) or reply to this email. 73 Tim WD6AWP _______________________________________________ ARM-allstar mailing list ARM-allstar@... http://lists.hamvoip.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/arm-allstar Visit the BBB and RPi2/3/4 web page - http://hamvoip.org -- Darrell Black (517) 917-2226 GigaHacker@... http://www.linkedin.com/in/darrellblack 73 de W8DSB "In God we trust, all others we monitor" GMRS WRDE739

Voice vs. CW
3
Hi Paul, I was able to power cycle my Allstar 10 times and out of those 10 reboots I was able to connect to my iPhone twice. This is sad but normal for the new IOS. Apple made changes to the network driver to support the new watches and airpods that has caused issues for ham radio. If you check the ham forums this problem is widespread. When you do get a good connection the raspberry PI connects / disconnects / reconnects so allstar does not always read the IP aloud. Things to check... No special characters in the SSID (Cell phone name) or Password - make sure you use only letters and numbers! Make sure your cell phone is not named "Paul's iPhone" or "Paul's" as this will not work in Linux There are a few things to make the connection percentage go up. Make sure you're on the hotspot screen Make sure your phone is not connected to another wifi source https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/03/21/apple-warns-support-teams-of-ios-13-personal-hotspot-issues This problem is not limited to raspberry PI however they seem to have a bigger issue then other devices. If you have a TP-Link travel router, try programming that to log into your phone and plug that into your PI ethernet. My club is using over 200 PI-STAR devices and those users with IOS devices had to abandon the idea of connecting via the iphone and went to cell hotspot until Apple fixes the issue. -- Darrell Black (517) 917-2226 GigaHacker@... http://www.linkedin.com/in/darrellblack 73 de W8DSB "In God we trust, all others we monitor" GMRS WRDE739

Successful Build
2
Hi, New to the group, to SHARI and to Allstar nodes. I bought the Pi4V in kit form and am very happy. I assembled it in 15 minutes, configured it in 5 minutes and it (almost) worked first try. When I keyed the mic, COS LED would stay on for 5 minutes until timing out. I remembered seeing an option to invert the COR line so I went after that - fixed. Maybe I missed something in the instructions or maybe I am a bit dim. I thought that I'd mention this fix in case someone else finds this behavior with a new node. I used the latest hamvoip image on a Pi3B. (the USB arrangement didn't matter Pi3 vs. Pi4 because I used 2 x 6" USB extensions to put the SHARI on top of the Pi) So 40 minutes from opening to box to complete functionality. Great fun. Thank you to N8AR for a nice design and a fun kit Tony KB8MVP

Did I Buy the Wrong Units?
9
#SHARI_PiXX_Differences
I bought, and am very happy with, two pre-built nodes, one each for VHf and UHF, and they appear to be specifically for the Pi 3. I own a Pi 4. While both units work perfectly, did I buy the wrong ones, or is it only the configuration and location of the USB ports that differentiate the two units, if indeed there actually *are* two units--one for the 3 and one for the 4?

What does it mean if the SHARI web page cannot find status information about my node? The node itself seems to be connecting and otherwise functioning properly? Thanks & 73, Ralph AA8RK

SD Card
2
#construction
#Allstar_Setup
I propose a change to the document 'SHARI Allstar Node Setup and Configuration Guide'. on page 2 the required hardware list suggests a SD Card 16G or larger. this should be changed to 4G required and larger is optional. from the Allstar Handbook (found here http://texomarepeatergroup.com/allstarhandbook.pdf and other places) on page 8... SD Cards The information below is from Arm Allstar by Doug Crompton. Just a reminder though that the read/write performance of the SD cards in a Linux application like Asterisk Allstar is immaterial after boot. So using a faster card is not going to make your system run faster. It would allow faster creation of the initial image and possibly faster boots (measured in a few seconds) but in most cases it would not be practical economically to purchase a super fast SD card. The speed which a card writes is also heavily effected by the type of writer (usb2/3) and the SW used to write. So while the relative differences in these tests might be valid the absolute values of these tests could differ greatly based on the hardware and SW used to write. Tried and true my choice is still the SanDisk Ultra but I am sure there are other cards in it's class that could be used. Also as I mentioned on the web page unless you have a compelling reason it is NOT a good idea to expand the filesystem on these cards after installing the image. Doing so makes total image backup a time consuming process especially on 16GB and larger cards and does nothing to improve performance or longevity ----------- furthermore, the image from the current repository at hamvoip.org expands to less than 4G. it does not auto expand on your SD Card leaving anything above 4G unused anyway. -NH7IT

SHARI Disappeared off WiFi network
11
I went to a friend's place as I only have a mobile phone for Internet and used his router to set up my new SHARI and got it all working perfectly. Then I set it up using my phone's WiFi hotspot and brought it home working fine. Now the next day it has dropped the connection and I have tried to restart it using *B6 with no success it will not recconnect via the WiFi. Does anyone have any suggestions, I cannot keep going back to my friend's house to use his router to reconfigure the SHARI. -- 73 de Simon, VK3XEM.

Two Days In And Almost Ready To Sell It
11
How do I get to a prompt to edit files? I have to figure out how to get the tones to decode and how to set the clock somehow. It won't decode DTMF 3 from any of my radios so I haven't been able to test it as far as connecting to another node. Then it thinks some random time is the top of the hour. I've got everything set up according the instructions, in the files section, but it's far from working correctly. I'm beginning to think this thing is going to end up on the QRZ classifieds. From what I'm seeing so far Hamvoip assumes that if you want to set up an All-Star node then you must have already earned a college degree in Linux. My MMDVM runs on Linux too but the person who wrote Pi-Star at least made it to where all you have to is fill in the correct information on the correct line. It worked right out of the box. Absolutely no previous Linux experience required. (I tested my DTMF keypad, on one of our local repeaters, and it decoded all of them on both radios, so the problem isn't on my end)
