Just installed shari node. Issues with dtmf codes

I am running a yaesu ftd5 and have used the method documented on this site to attempt and set dtmf tones. Everyone of the codes except the 'A' tone work. I have adjusted the receive volume. Any suggestions. I can live with out the 'A' tone, but would like to get it working.

John

I had the same problem with the “A” DTMF tone not being recognized. I reduced the audio level. I disabled pre-emphasis de-emphasis, high pass filter, and low pass filter in the sa818-menu.

In the asl-menu under node settings, 8 interface tune CLI?
Set transmit A level to 700
Set transmit B level to 800
RX boost disabled?
Pre-emphasis disabled
De-emphasis disabled?
Echo mode disabled?
PL filter enabled
CTCSS no

Before these changes, the “A” DTMF key never decoded. Some of the macros use the “A” DTMF tone. After the changes, including reducing the transmit audio a little bit, the “A” DTMF always decodes properly. When I had this problem, it was only the “A” key that did not work.

Following this as well. So far my 5d and 70d have the same issue. My cheap Chinese radios don't have that issue though. Have done the same and turned off DTMF muting in the config file, made no difference. RX levels have been anywhere from 30-75%.

You are lucky,? I can't get any of mine to work.

You are not alone in this. The Kenwood TH-D7x's suffer this anomalous behavior as well. Believe me when I tell you that it's not you, it's not your settings, it's the Shari radio module itself. I also know this from others I know who have built Shari systems that don't have anything in them with the Shari name on it--in other words, they took a Pi, installed ASL or HamVOIP software, and connected said Pi to a real radio via one of the USB ports and a suitable digital-to-audio interface, and there's no problem with the "A" digit on any radio they use to talk with it..

Also looking for a solution to this issue, i am running a TH-D75 and only DTMF that wont work is A. adjusted and tested RX audio levels as well.

Running ASL3 here and have the same challenge with my FT-5. Using a FTM-500 ‘A’ is decoded correctly. I adjusted audio levels as well, and have not yet found a configuration to make it work.

On my FT-70 and I am guessing some of the other Yaesu models presenting the same problem of SHARI decoding an "A", I found by examining the waveform on a HP modulation analyzer and? oscilloscope with other test equipment that the high tone of 1633 Hz is too low in relation to the low tone of 697 Hz. ?This excessive twist is causing the decoding problem.
?
There is a fix. ?The following is from a message by David, K4FXC.
?
Yes, the DTMF decode tolerances can be "loosened up" in chan_simpleusb, on HamVoIP. ?In the simpleusb.conf file stanza for the node that needs adjustment, simply set:
?
dtmf_relax=1
?
...Then, restart asterisk. ?Note that changing this setting will probably
also lead to false DTMF decodes. ?I've never had a node where I needed to enable dtmf_relax, I've always found be carefully adjusting the input?
audio, etc., I could persuade decoding to work. ?I don't recommend?
enabling this setting, unless there is no other alternative.
?
I am using the settting for the SA818 and simpleUSB filter and pre/de-emphasis that I recommend in this document.

I have a Kenwood TH-D74 that is happily decoded on all digits by all three SHARIs and another SA-818 board I own.

I've found that, especially with the DTMF A character, that it's almost always that the RX gain is too high, or the SHARI's radio volume is too high, which causes distortion even before the channel driver hears it, or something is wrong with the pre-emphasis/de-emphasis settings on the radio and/or the channel driver, be that simpleusb in HamVoIP, or either Simpleusb or usbradio in ASL3.

N8AR now recommends setting the SHARI's volume to 6, which has worked well for me. He previously recommended using a radio volume of 8, but volume 6 yields a cleaner input to the sound fob.

To test, since I can't see the bar graph on the input gain, I just go to the Asterisk CLI on one console, then open the tune interface in another, then when not connected to any node, bash all the tones from the radio to see which are being decoded in real time with verbosity set to 3, then adjusting the RX gain in the other window if needed.

I have many, many HT's, and I've yet to find a combination of radios I couldn't get to decode all digits with a good initial rarget RX level and output from the? SHARI itself.

I have a Shari and five radios: a Kenwood TH-D75, a Yaesu FT-70D, a TYT MD-UV380, and two Kenwood TMV-71A’s. My Shari decodes every digit including A and 3 on every single radio. No problems. I had to get very particular about the levels.

Adjust the Pre-Emphasis and De-Emphasis in the Simple USB / CLI settings to the opposite of what they are now and see if it makes a difference. It works sometimes, ?not always, but sometimes.

These settings worked for me to get "A" to be recognized. All 16 characters are decoded properly now. thank you.

Your suggestion, relaxing dtmf in the config file.

I always thought TX-B wasn't used... unless something's changed in the last few years..?

You are correct.? In a SHARI node, the transmit (TX) audio comes from pin 30 of the CM108B (Line Out Left or LOL).? This is commonly called Transmit A Level, TXA or TX-A.?
?
Pin 32 - Line Out Right (LOR) commonly called Transmit B Level, TXB or TX-B? is not connected to anything.

Hi?
?
If you talking about number 4 on? tx b? no it's not use just tx a I'm belive?

Download the ASL3 appliance image and flash the card with the raspberry pi imager.? Don’t forget to set the username and wifi and enable ssh in the imager.? It’s debian 12.7
