I like to take periodic image backups too by putting the SD card in my Mac's card reader and using the to create an image, which I then compress using before filing it with today's date in the name and a brief description of what's recently changed.

The process is a little quicker if you use small capacity SD cards but 8 GB and below are getting hard to find.
