Steve & Chris-

Our blind ham, a Vietnam Vet, and VP of the VFW post 3115 ARC, lost his vision after Katrina. He was working oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and the evacuated him to New Orleans just before Katrina hit. While there he developed a fungus in his one eye that spread up his optic nerve to the other. He was interested in Ham radio and went from ZERO to EXTRA in 3 months. I was one of three who gave him his license test. Here in Wichita, we have 4-5-6 blind hams. The W?VFW VHF repeater is on the Blind Hams Talk Group 24x7 for everyone to enjoy. Here in Wichita, they started the Visually Inconvenienced Hams Facebook Group. Last time I? spoke with my blind friend, he got measured for a cane and was starting to learn braille. ? ?
If you read an old post on the hamviop.org forum from myself, I published directions to add a "voice menu" to any allstar node by modifying etc/asterisk/rpt.config. So that star "C" (for commands) will speak a list of common ALLSTAR commands plus I programmed in 4 "speed dials" *51-*54. (and you can do more) This way our blind ham has a quick reference to the basics once I had walked out his door. ? Maybe I should cross post that to the Blind hams group on groups.io..
