Re: SAE TALK LIST TEST
Hello everyone-
I'm having no trouble receiving the messages to my email or accessing the list. I haven't posted anything since I'm not able to be active in this hobby currently. I had a SAE 2400 amp, 8000 tuner, and a preamp/EQ (I forgot which model #) from about 1978-80, back when I lived at home and spent all my money. Shortly after moving out I sold it all and bought a new GAS Grandson and $100 apiece Cizek 3 speakers and used my Advent 300 receiver as a preamp. I still use the Grandson and Cizek's to this day (had them refoamed last year) with a GAS Thalia II preamp and a Sumo Charlie tuner. I watch the ebay auctions for SAE, GAS, Sumo, and Marantz and frequently bookmark interesting items. The Thalia and Charlie came from ebay and are great. I also bought a Denon 45 turntable on ebay. One day I'll replace the Cizek's (their vinyl cabinets and foam grills aren't pretty) but right now I can't afford anything that sounds better. They're a great match with the Grandson. I imagine they'd also work well with a XXXIB. Oh well, window shopping is fun. I'm glad to have a line on how to contact James. I picked up an Ampzilla II cheap last year with one channel out. I may need to send it to the doctor, since I can't seem to get ridof the DC offset on that channel. All for now. desertfox wrote: snip Mark, everything seem to be OK at my end. By the way, what's the most IWell that a hard one. Usually for a standard off the shelf amp, I use a Dollar per channel watt figure of merit. 100W/Channel amp is good for $100. I call this a 1:1 (One to One ratio) But consistent high demand for an poplular amp like SAE's could get a 1:1.5 ratio. 100W/Channel amp is good for $150. So I would not pay more than $600 for a 2600 in my book. I bought my 2600 for $500. It worked sort and I had to rebuild it completly. But that is a different story In the various recent EBAY auctions where the reserves are higher than $600 for a 2600 have not sold if I remember correctly. Member Status & a SAE story.
gurriesm
Hello all,
It been quite lately. The last message was sent on March 10th concerning the T101 tuner schematics. So I thought I might stir up some conversation here. Our membership stands at 28 members. Given the number of SAE bidders I see on Ebay, it seems that we should have more members. Our best method of attracting members is by word of mouth. I, in the past to kick things off had sent email to EBAY bidders directly. Thanks to Wards Web, we got a pointer to us. Myself, I have been out of town for two weeks working at Dell computer in Austin Texas on there new Inspiron 3800. A cool looking PC computer even though I am a Macintosh User. I found myself with EBAY withdrawl pains!!! I still need to do some SAE stuff in terms of repairs and upgrades as well as working with Ward Web on getting some archive SAE info out. But at the moment my focus is now on Taxes and a Model Railroad train show coming up at the end of April. I doing some presentations at the show. ------------------------------------- By the way, my 2600 I rebuilt worked just fine in the fund raising show I did March 4th. Here is the setup in case you guys are interested in see SAE in action. The main mix of my Pioneer 101 CD changer, two SAE D102 CD players, 2 Nady wireless Mics, and one fixed stage mic was handled by my EBAY repaired Yamaha MX1202 main mixer who's main output went three ways. The goal was to setup a bi-amp main stage/room setup and also support some full range setups in other adjacent rooms. The main room was a large Gymnasium. The first MIXER connection was directly to my SAE 4000 crossover that setup to be a hi-pass filter that cut off bass below 100Hz. (About the lower limit of the crossover.) The 4000 output was then split up two ways. One line went directly to my SAE MK31B (50W/chan) which handled the Midrange on up for the Front stage location. The other line went to my EBAY rebuilt SAE 2100L. I had a 2200 (100W/chan) controlled by by the 2100L to handle a set of second midrange on up speakers that where set up on the sides further out in the Audience. This allowed me to optimize the rear volume relative to the front volume. The 2100L LED meter was configure in watt mode to monitor the power output of the MK31B. The second MIXER connection was to my Ebay purchased Heathkit 1702 subwoofer crossover. The 1702 offers a butterworth 6 and 18 dB per octave slopes for both the Hi-pass and Lo-pass sections. The Lo-pass section offers independent gain control and a inverted output in case you want to drive an amp in bridge mode. The crossover points are fixed at 5 frequencies that is selectable with a rotary switch. It was set to 100Hz to match the 4000. The 1702 currently has a problem with AC line spike noises which I did not have time to fix. They noise passes right on through to the audio. The SAE 4000 is clean and just seems to sound better than the 1702. The 1702 uses some discrete transistors in the audio chain configured as several AC couple unity gain buffers. I do not think there much common mode rejection with this design. I will rebuild this crossover completely. Anyway, the 1702 drove my 2600 Amp which drove two 15" subwoofers for bass sound. The third MIXER connection fed my rebuilt Sony 2000F PreAmp. This drove one of my two MKIIICM (200W/chan) to handle 4 ohm loads in two other side rooms. This was a full range setup. The 2000F allowed me to again control the volume in the main rooms relative to the stage. I my Hafler DH200 (100W/chan) to power my monitors. All the sound sources that where not mics, went through my Bessinger UltraBass synthesizer and Hafler Equalizer. The UltraBass is not an equalizer. It takes any frequency it see in the source below a cutoff frequency you choose, and add a frequency one octave down (1/2 the source frequency) back into the source. So if you set the crossover to 120Hz, it will start to add some 60Hz sound. It cool when used properly. It great for adding some bottom end that seem to get lost in older recordings from Big Band Era. The PIONEER 101 CD was set to random and will not repeat a song until all of the tracks of all the CD have been played once. Not all CD players can do that. Loaded with about 20 greatest hits CD of many era's of music, I did not have to play DJ all the time. Compared to $300 rented Peavy system and the Prerecorded tapes they played in the past, I blew them away in quality of sound and sound coverage. All my stuff is RETMA (19") rack mounted in professional cases just like the professionals use. Why did I do all this on my own dollar? The primary goal was to help the Private school that I send my kids to raise money. But the real reason is that I love to set up high quality sound systems for dances and such using SAE equipment. This includes the fun of rebuilding and upgrading the equipment. I used to do this in high school for school dances. I got lots of people come up and ask about the system. A lot of them who were into stereo stuff back then remember SAE. It's a lot of fun. I get to do this one night show annually and another annual 3 day show in October. The first is for the school and the second is for the church. 2 shows a year for the next nine years. My next move is to get a better mixer with more configuration flexibility and compressor limiters for the microphones for less feedback and better voice clarity. I also need to buy some wireless mics since I rented those. I need to electrically modify and rebuild the Heathkit 1702. I also have to check out my 4000 since I never really looked at since I bought it back in the late 70's. I also have to go through my 5000A and pull out my old 45lb Dennon turntable along with some records too!! I need to get the voltage drive 2600 transistors replaced with the right ones as soon as I know what they are. I need to play with the 2100L and get the dim level a little dimmer. I replaced all the good and bad red LED's with all new Green, Yel, Red LED that are naturally are brighter. I knew this would be an issue since someone warned me about it. Bright is bright!! The 3 colors look cool although even though is not true SAE of this time period. But if SAE could of put 3 color LED's back then, they would have. The 2100L rebuild also involved replacing all the 2100L op-amps with LT1122 equivalent, the voltage noise went down to about 1/2 of the level of the NE5534 parts. I also pulled all ceramic caps above 100pF and replaced them with 5% polystyrene. The Big bulk DC ripple filter caps were just about dead. Lot of 60 Hz ripple on the 5V logic supply which was passed onto the LED display making them always flicker. Found a large burned and blown open ground trace on the back panel jack board. Someone ran some serious ground current through this PreAmp and where talking like 20Amps or more!!!. Replaced a blown 4558 dual opamp in the LED analog section. The negative op-amp supply rail was running at -10V while the positive was running at the +18 as it should be. Something was wrong here since the Zener Diodes that set the reference voltage where the same!! I replaced all the discrete regulators with LM7815 and a LM7915 regulators. So now everything runs at +/-15V. Had to pop off all the dust seals on the 17 accessible push button switches to chemically clean them since many were noisy or would drop a channel out when activated. Popping the seals off and putting them on was not easy. It was made extra hard since the 2100L goes together as a set of interlocking PCB's. To get inside, you have to break many board apart carefully. It designed to do this, but it is time consuming if you discount the 20+ screws to remove just to get inside!! Cleaned up all the panels and cosmetically covered up all the scratches. All this on a EBAY buy in which the guy said that only the LED display was partially working. I concur, if it works, don't worry. If it's shorted you'll know it, it
doesn't work. The information in the tech section is for rebuilding blown amps
and gives insight into such an endeavor. It is by no means the complete
process.

I wouldn't worry about the components in your 2200. Either the unit works or it doesn't. There is no grey area here. The only thing for you to consider is upgrading and modernizing your unit. This is an old unit (about 20 years old) and electronic products do age like everything else in life. Upgrading can restore life to these old products mainly because virtually ALL of the active parts get replaced with new modern components. If you are interested, please contact me at <jamesbongiorno@...> and I'll e-mail you my schedule. James Bongiorno tonyscimemiavms@... wrote: From: tonyscimemiavms@... |

SAE 5000 & 5000A Impulse Noise Reduction Unit
desertfox
Does any one know if the model 5000A Impulse Noise Reduction unit is an
up grade of the model 5000 unit or do they contain the same the exact same circuitry. The model 5000 was made between 1976-80, and the model 5000A was made between 1980-85. Rumor has it that KLH made a better unit than SAE. Is this true? Your comments please. Bob Ludka |
