Re: SAE Amplifier Emitter Resistors
Thanks for the follow up Mike.? Could I get the manufacturer and part number of the resistor you were referring to in your post?
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to provide your insights and information.? While researching non-inductive resistors I came across a forum thread where a Caddock high-powered film resistor was used as a replacement for these emitter resistors.? I also came upon non-inductive wirewound power resistors from China on eBay. |
Re: SAE Amplifier Emitter Resistors
开云体育Hi Everyone, The low ohmic emitter resistors used in SAE power amps and many others from the 70'/80's in this application with power transistors can be can be inductive, low inductance or non inductive types. At time of design and production cost is always a concern so usually a general use cement/sand type inductive resistor is used to keep costs under control. Here is one I found to be NON INDUCTIVE in a AXIAL case style. They are available from Mouser @ $ 1.16 if you purchase 10 or more. Hope this helps in your 3100 repair. mike Vintage Audio Labs On Oct 17, 2020, at 9:07 PM, "Michael" <mikebettinger@...> wrote:

Re: SAE Amplifier Emitter Resistors
Try KOA Speers BPR58CR22J.? It's a 5 watt .22 ohm non inductive, metal foil design.? I've used this for years,? Mouser has stock on them and they are under a buck a piece.? They are radial leads but I believe there may be an axial lead version, although I didn't look.?

开云体育Great answer Goran. That is the kind of straight forward information that solves problems. Everything is always up for debate and different theories… but I will take 99.9999% of what is used as almost 100% of the time!

SAE Amplifier Emitter Resistors
Henry Griffin:
>whether SAE used non-inductive emitter resistors in the 3100.? >Still looking for the answer. I knew the SAE agent here in Sweden. I repaired faulty SAE gear in my part of Sweden. I asked the factory via Telex about the emitter resistors and the straight answer was that they were normal inductive power resistors. Nothing fancy at all. I will say that this answer is what 99.9999% of all amplifiers at that time used. With the best power transistors having an Ft of barely 2 MHz and the closed loop unity gain at around 500 kHz to keep the amplifier from oscillation due to cumulative phase shift, Nyquist criteria,? there simply would not be any use for non-inductive resistors. Modern amps using ring emitter power transistors with an Ft of 50 MHz might use non inductive emitter resistors if the designer felt it useful. But even today most normal standard product do not use non-inductive emitter resistors for the gain is zero and total Bill Of Materials, BOM, cost must be held as low as possible to meet the target price in the street and still allow a profit.

SAE Amplifier Emitter Resistors
Does anyone know if the emitter resistors used in SAE amplifiers are of the non-inductive type?? I have a SAE 3100 that needs a new .2 ohm 5W cement resistor in the output section.? There is little information on the resistor besides its value, power rating, and its manufacturer, Micron.? Reviewing available information from the internet doesn't help answer the question.
Does anyone know for sure? |
Re: S A E 2600
hi Armin, thank you for the info, first of all i live in the u. k. and drooled over the S A E in the 70s ( 1975 ) i saw the add in the hi fi news that agents over here was gale, i think at that time the 2600 was about $1500, my wage was in $ about $40 a week at the age? of? 16 years old, the internet has made it possible to get the items i have plus a friend over in the states when they would not ship to the u. k. i have asked someone over in the u. s. and he says S A E do not come close to the krell,s , then i asked how do you compare? the 2600,s and i did not get a reply. then i asked someone over here who knows the krell,s and said the difference would be huge to the 2600, i was lucky to get a pair of? infinity rs 2bs that someone was selling over here, i use a SAE A501 for the mid/high? and? the S A E 2600 for the low end, it sounds pretty ok to me, like you as i am later in life? and money is not as tight when my children was young, but i do not chuck money at something it doe,s not justifies, i also said to the friend in the? u. s. about the rs 1b,s and he said the cost of the speakers and shipping to get them over here compared to the? rs 2b,s? i would be disappointed that is why i need input from people, thank you? regards rob ?

The threshold was a very close second but didn’t quite have the high frequencies, but still loved it. The Krell was also a very decent performer but didn’t have the mids.? I sold the Krell many years ago, I only sold the Threshold last year after many years of flawless service. The SAE, died about 25 years ago but I have still kept it. I can afford a lot more amps at this stage in life and have played with a LOT of audio gears over the years, James’ and Nelson’s modern power amps are still the ones I have. 开云体育Hello Tom,Please excuse me as I am confused. Is this the new SAE-Talk Group? The only email I received stated that the Yahoo group was being shut down soon. I just want to be sure what's what. Thanks, Mike Nye ? On 3/2/2020 9:38 AM, Tom Wilson wrote:

I hear you.?
I spoke with Ken and several of the other techs listed on the SAE forum recommended list before I opted to try him.? Biggest reason was I could deliver my equipment and meet him in person (it's a 2hr drive for me) versus shipping across the country and taking chances with FedEx or UPS.? And on the two pieces I did receive back (2400L, 1800EQ) he did a very nice job.? Chalk it up to a learning experience, I guess.? I originally wanted to use Mark Wilson at Absolute Sound Labs, but he stopped working on the big amps (2400 and above.)? Who have you worked with? |

开云体育Sorry to hear about your problems with that technician. I don’t want it to sound like I’m schooling you on this but there’s only a couple of people in the country that I would even consider sending my valued equipment to. He isn’t one of them.On Jan 28, 2020, at 9:53 AM, Tom Wilson <tomwilson2@...> wrote:

Looking for Feedback on Stereo Surgeons and Ken Bernacky - East Hartford, CT
Good morning!? I’m looking for feedback on Stereo Surgeons and Ken Bernacky, up in East Hartford, CT.? They are listed in the group directory as an SAE service center.? ? I chose to have my SAE line serviced by Ken at Stereo Surgeons because he was within reasonable driving distance.? It took 7 months for him to complete a service and restoration of my 2400L/2100L/1800 and when I went to pick them up the 2100L had mysteriously developed intermittent issues that had not previously shown up.? And Ken couldn’t/wouldn’t even show me the unit, even though I had already paid for the servicing.? The 2400L and 1800 appear to work okay, but I’m now out a preamp which severely limits their utility.? And, through a continuing series of calamities (literally, a car drove through into the front of his shop!) my 2400L now appears to be “missing” or “destroyed” – unfortunately I think it had gone missing long before the car crash incident. ? So, as I started, looking for anyone else who has had an experience – good or bad – with Ken and Stereo Surgeons.? I’d also like to recommend that he be removed from the SAE repair database.? Although I believe he is a really solid technician and does quality work, he is far too unreliable and probably untrustworthy. ? Best regards, Tom Wilson ? |
