1985, hull #16 sailing on Ky Lake out of Paris Landing in west Tennessee. Bought her in 1990 and she's still going strong. I'm slowing down a little bit though. Some friends took this picture a couple years ago.

S/V Carina 1986 S2-27 Hull # something over 80 (We bought her new, can’t remember actual hull #) Taking this year off. My wife & I are celebrating 30 year anniversary (got married on Carina in ‘86) by going transatlantic on the Queen Mary II from England to NYC. Take care, Frank

How many S2 27 owners are out there?
I purchased My S2 27 (hull 40) last year. She is named "Lunacy" she is my 5 boat in 30 plus years of sailing. While there were only 85 of these boats produced, I was curious about the Hull number and name of yours? I own Hull 40 with Edson steering, Traveller (Gauhuer) and a Harken Mark IV Roller Furling with a new suit of sails topped off with a Raymarine EV-1 wheel pilot. Lunacy may be the best single handling boat I ever sailed the balance is awesome. Yes the modifications are extreme but this boat jewelry is just for fun. A friend shot this little video the other night on an after work sail. Unstepping the mast
Hi all, Sadly, it is time to pull the boat for the season. This is my 1st year with the boat, so 1st time taking the mast down. It looks pretty straight forward, get the mast centered under the hoist, secure the hoist sling to the mast under the spreader, undo the stays, and up through the hull she comes. I have no idea what type of plugs are inside the base of the mast for the mast lights/VHF antenna, but I assume no surprises there either. Do any of you have advice or tricks to make this process go smoother? Anything specific to avoid doing that might cause damage/problems? Thanks in advance. Joe

Prop shaft stuffing box maintenance
6
I know this posting is old, but I am in the process of checking out an S2 27 so I am hoping someone can help. I asked the current owner how to access the stuffing box as the engine compartment is pretty tight. He wasn't sure himself, but it looks like the only access is from the starboard side cockpit locker. Am I right on this? If not, how should I get access to the stuffing box? Based on what I have read here the water I found underneath the engine could be from a leaky stuffing box. Any other thoughts on how water can get in the area directly underneath the engine? thanks, Joe

Water strainer for engine
4
I have read about in line water strainers that keep gunk out of the impeller/water pump. My boat does not have one. There is just the water line from the shut off valve to where it attaches below the impeller housing. I have the Yanmar 1GM10 diesel in my boat. Do any of you have a strainer between the shut off valve and the impeller? If so, what make/model? thanks, Joe

Rudder Klunk
5
We've finally gotten our boat ready and sailed it a few times in Galveston bay. It sails great, tosses us around a bit in choppy water, and goes fast. The problem we face right now is the rudder klunking in its mount. Has anyone found a way to eliminate that slack in the mount? I got new bushings, little plastic ones that I had to trim down to install, but I couldn't get the bottom one in place because the pivot pin was a tad too short to insert the bushing and still get the cotter pin in place. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dick

S2-27 Group still Active
6
Since it has been slow on this group how about everybody reply with their name, hull number, location and current status. I also have no issue with offering used sails or other sailing equipment for sale on this list, as long as it your personal stuff. If we get a bunch of offers to buy Chinese Rolex's I can turn it off again. Maintenance tips and tricks are always good. What do you think about allowing images to be posted ? I turned it on on another list and it has not caused problems. Mark S2-27 #15 Nashville, Old Hickory Lake, HIYC In the water....

S2 27 sailing performance in heavy weather
8
Hi, I am looking at an S2 27. I am on the western end of Lake Erie, so we occasionally get some winds 15+ Kts. and some pretty good chop to go with it. We currently own an O'day 25. I am concerned that the S2 27 may not handle much better since it is only 2 ft longer and 1000 lbs heavier. Any opinions on how the S2 handles in heavy weather is greatly appreciated. thanks, Joe

New Tack
6
From the group manager...and founder: This Spring I sold my S2 27 after 8 years of ownership. For a variety of reasons I have chosen to downsize to a smaller boat...Cape Dory 22 on trailer...easier to manage, loser cost, etc.. My 27 served as a great boat and platform for cruising and racing. But it was time for me to move on. I will keep this Group site open until the end of the year, then, if someone hasn't contacted me about taking it over I will shut it down. I am not sure I'm able to transfer ownership of a group to another person, so if someone does want to take over the files may need to be transferred over to new person, not sure the posts can be dealt with... Thanks Rick

Model variations
Does anyone have any model specific details for each year, hull number, etc. I noticed the '85 brochure (my model #11) has a different interior from the '87. What hull number made this shift? What year? What happened in '86? Is it just the difference between cruising and racing? My model is the racing (mainsheet track in cockpit) and more control lines run aft on cabin top. Thanks, Matt (pyrocrig)

Standard Horizon radio location advise
Hi All, I'm going to update my VHF radio & am thinking about the Standard Horizon GX 1600/1700. I have an '86 S2-27. I will want to mount the radio below deck in the main cabin area. I'd like to locate it on the starboard side just forward of the head, on that narrow portion of shelf just above the settee. My question is: Since the GPS antenna is built-in to the front-end of the radio unit, will the GPS functions on the GX 1700 be compromised if mounted below-deck? If I need to use an additional chart plotter or external antenna to get a good GPS signal anyway, I'd go ahead with the GX1600. Anyone with either radio like to comment before I purchase? I want to get in before the 7/31 rebate deadline. Thanks! Take care, Frank

Hull Numbers
10
I haven't seen any posts in a while, not sure the list is still active but here goes anyway. I tried to renew my state registration on line and ran into an issue with the Hull ID number format. My boat is an 85 and my hull number is SSU270150585. The state says it is an incorrect (format) number because the 9th digit should be a letter not the number zero. It has been fine for nearly 30 years but now there is a question. According to the state Hull Number Checker the 9th digit should be a letter indicating the month, A=Jan, B=Feb, etc. Using that format there would be no letter "O", but if I replace the zero with a letter it takes it. I know there was a change in the HIN's just before my boat was produced but it doesn't match the earlier convention unless the 9th and 10th digit are a numerical reference to the month, 05 = May. Has anyone else run into this issue? I can easily replace the zero with a letter "O" and it will accept it but I wonder what's correct..... Confused? me too! Mark Nashville Hull No. 15 (pretty sure)

Cockpit Cushions

Hello all. I'm new to Yahoo Groups, so forgive me if my searching technique is poor. I was wondering if anyone has ordered cockpit cushions they were happy with, and if so, where that might be. Thanks Greg
