Autosparks Harness replacement
2
Hi all, Does anyone have experience with Autosparks harnesses? From what I can find online, the quality seems good and they appear to be a supplier for a lot of other harness sellers in the British classic car world. I wanted to check with the folks here to see if anyone had personal experience with them as a replacement harness for a vehicle. How "apart" does the car need to be for a harness replacement? Thanks! For Sale.? White Lotus Esprit S1 207H Project. 770 03 0207H.
For Sale. White Lotus Esprit S1 207H Project. This is a very original Esprit, white with original tartan interior, that has not been on the road since 1980, it has been under cover since then, with an original 24,031 miles on the clock. When collected the left wheel wobbled when the car was pushed. The cause of the car being left off the road appears to be a broken rear right wheel bearing. Bought as a rolling barn find, I took the body off the chassis at the end of last year (following Bill Galbraith¡¯s process) to reveal that the chassis is in almost perfect condition, light rust only, as seen in the images. Soon after the car arrived, I attached a battery and checked that all the electrics were working which they are save for the head lamp lift motor and reverse lights, as seen in a video I have. The chassis is complete with engine and gearbox in place, radiator, fuel lines and coolant lines all untouched. Project needs a new home as we are selling up and moving back to the UK very soon. Some of you may have noticed that my red Lotus 228H has recently sold on BAT. All smaller parts from the car are labeled in ziplock bags and are boxed, included are several Esprit manuals, parts manual, folders, new suspension parts front and rear and a 907 Healey engine. The body (ready for spraying0 and chassis are currently separated but can be reattached. Car had MA title I have recently applied for a NY title and have a receipt for the application. Asking - $12,000 of BO History Signed off production line 26th March 1977. Invoiced to Lotus East, Millertown, NY. 6th out of 39 White cars sold in Lotus East. 770 03 0207H. White in the body color, S01. This car is the last serial number made pin white in gel body. Eng - AC7 7703 13563. Gearbox - 0271. Manufactured - 26th March, 1977 Sold - Lotus East, Millerton, NY. 9/8/79 - Boston parking ticket found under drivers seat. 01 - code = parking within 10 feet of fire hydrant. Original paper service tags attached to door shut. Purchased as a rolling car - 24,031 miles. Along with 907 Jensen Healey Engine. Sept 12th - Car picked up from seller in covered trailer. Spark plugs removed - Marvel oil put into each cylinder. Sept 14th - 17th first images taken. Cleaned interior, and all chrome exterior pieces taken off and cleaned. 2015 7/23/15 Alternator professionally renovated. $145. Was working but corroded. 2020 10//20 - Started cleaning exterior. Light rubbing compound. 11/1/20 - Cleaned fuses. 11/2/20 - Fitted battery to test electrics ¡ª All lights worked (interior, dash rheostat, indicators, sidelights, dip/full beams), fans worked, windows worked. Only reverse light not tested. Headlight pods did not come up but lights both worked. Windscreen wipers, both speeds and washer motor. Dash and interior lights worked. Radio also light up but speakers not connected. Dials - fuel, water temp flickered and battery flickered. 11/20/20 - Took out both seats, capping rails & tunnel cover. Started cleaning. Harness improvements
7
So I have been working on getting the S2 roadworthy again and wanted to bring back up the subject of harnesses. The more I dig deeper into this car, the less confidence I have about the wiring decisions of previous owners. The car drove fine when I put it in storage but I have never been this deep into the underpinnings of the car. There are frayed wires, random open wires throughout the engine bay, poor quality connections and wiring work, and general untidiness to the whole harness. All of which scares me quite a lot. I am swapping out the old MSD setup, removing the 1990s alarm system, and cleaning things up generally, so I wanted to hear what the experts here had to say about the following: If you were to undertake a full harness refresh on an early Esprit, what would you consider the gold standard in updates to the wiring? Pretend this is a thought experiment in what should be done. I already have stuff to put in relays for the windows, new Spal fans, and headlights, but want to hear what you have done or would do. A modern fusebox like the ones they put in hotrods? Anything specific?

Rear tailgate glass
I was wandering through SJ¡¯s catalog, and saw that they reproduce the rear tailgate glass, if anyone is interested. It¡¯s almost $600, and I¡¯m sure it¡¯s going to be pricey to get it shipped, but at least it¡¯s available now. Bill Virus-free.www.avg.com

Brake Light Switch?

The brake lights went out on my S1. Where is the switch? I couldn't find anything in the manual. Do the leads that connect to the brake fluid reservoir cap have anything to do with the lights? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. -- Toaph

Ideal wheel configuration
22
I did some digging in the search here but I couldn¡¯t find an exact answer for this. Has anyone ever evaluated what the best tire/rim combination for handling on these early Esprits? I know the tire availability for the 14s are pretty bad, but what would be the best rim widths and offsets (front and back) in both 15-inch and 16-inch (or even staggered) configurations. I love the Speedlines and the BBS-style on the Turbos, but I was curious if anyone had ever played around with different setups to see what was best for handling and tire availability. I would like to find some nice three piece 15-inch wheels but not entirely sure what offset and width would be best. Thanks, Shah

Front suspension lower link inner bushing
7
Hello all, I'm replacing all front suspension bushings, ball joints, springs and shocks on my 1977 Esprit S1. All was going well until I came upon the front lower link inner bushing. Apparently, there was a design change after 1978. I have the rubber bushings for post 1978 links, which of course do not fit. A solution is to send the links to England and have them resleaved to fit the bushings. Since that process might take over a month or two, has anyone resolved this issue locally or diy? If so, please let me know details. Added a pic to show original link (bottom) and new bushing (top). No, the new bushing will not slide into existing sleeve. Thanks, Jeff

Wiring Nightmare...?
27
So I've got my 77 S1 with a good mechanic who was recommended to my by local Lotus folk. It seems I'm in good hands with him. He was able to track down my coolant leak(s), and much to our relief, it was not the head gasket. However, when he started digging into some electrical issues I have with the popup headlamps, things turned very bleak very quickly. The wires behind the left side binnacle panel practically made him faint. It looked like they'd actually been on fire at some point (see toaph.com/esprit). He said that if I wanted to fix this up right, we should replace the entire wiring harness. So this leads me to a couple obvious questions: 1) Are wiring looms even available? RD Enterprises didn't think so, except maybe from SJ in England, and even then it's probably a long-shot. 2) How unrealistic is a job like this? Does the body have to come off? How many hundreds of hours would be involved? The guy said he could probably improv his way out of it, but couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be another melt-down somewhere in the future. We figured the first step was to get the above questions answered. Thoughts????? -- Toaph

Smog equipment
7
Does anyone have a good source for the smog equipment for a ¡®79 S2? Mine has none of that equipment and I will have to go through that I have also read that folks have passed CA smog with Dellortos if they have the air pump and air injection rail intact, airbox and catalytic converter in place. Does anyone know more details on that?
