Eccentric Housing ID
I have a new eccentric hub for the cam belt tensioner and find its OD greater than the ID of a crank seal housing of unknown origin. Any insights? Thanks Steve

Inner Tie Rod Ends 9
After years of fun, trouble free driving in my 1977 S1 Esprit, I have my first real issue. The passenger side inner tie rod end has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Anyone know what car this part originally came from? Is it something I will be able to order from a typical auto parts store in the USA or do I need to look at one of the Lotus parts sources? Has anyone done this recently that wont mind passing along some helpful tips? Thanks for the help -Skip

S1 tire choices 8
Can you tell me which tires you are using on your S1s and what you think of them? I need to get tires and expect to use the car as a driver with only an occasional track day. Thanks, Mark

Fuse values 5
Can someone supply me with the fuse values used in an S1 Esprit? I have found the two blocks in the glovebox and their representation on the schematic but have not found the actual values. Looked through the parts manual and the workshop manual. Maybe there is a users manual with this info?

I have the wiring diagram as my car had luminition installed. For the fuel sender, I have the wires isolated, but in the photo ill show, theres a black one which will need to rebuilt which ill assume is a ground wire. Does it matter which connector these go on the fuel sender, or will either spade connector work? Theres also a 4th wire in that part of the harness I have no clue so if anyone has any wirting harness photos they can send me to help me that would be incredible as the entire wiring harnness is mostly black it seems and its a totall mess, I want to clean it up,. Info on how to assemble sjs sportscar new radiator and shroud 6
Hey all, my radiator, shroud and parts are finally here and im stumped. So i have here my old radiator and shroud. A complete prepared by claudious radiaor/fan/shroud setup ( that didnt fit after buying, so now its sueless as the radiator was too long to fit under the car. Due to this i orderted a new radiator, shroud, and upper and lower mounting brackets as well as foam from sjssportscars. Sadly it has no assembly insctructions. Im using the old one as a templater. The shroud has holes has dimples you can see where to drill the new mounting holes so that s no issue. The issue I am having is how do you attatch the bottom bracket to the radiator itself. Its the same size as the bracket on the bottom of the radiator. The bottom bracket has 2 bolt holes so you can mount the radiator to the shroud and besides the top that mounts it to the car, this is all that holds it on. I cannot see how the bracket goes on. I assumed it would slide in but it appears it does not. Has anyone bought and installed or done one of these? photos for reference

Engine Rebuild - Update
Folks, Since I have been reading of others on the group climbing the same learning curve as myself in terms of sorting out engine problems I thought I would update the situation with my car. You might recall the original issue was a seized exhaust camshaft. My best guess is that it was caused by oil starvation due to both a clogged oil pickup screen and what seemed to be a very loose fastener holding the pickup pipe into the oil pump housing. I got very lucky in that the rest of the engine looked good so I installed all new bearings seals and gaskets. I purchased a used cam carrier and a used replacement camshaft and installed the engine in the car. When I tried to start it I had serious trouble getting it to run. Eventually, by mistake, I mis-timed the exhaust camshaft by one sprocket tooth and the car started. That was when I learned Lotus had a wide variety of camshafts for the 907 engine. DUH! After some considerable searching I found a suitable "red dot" 110 degree pulley for my "C" exhaust camshaft and got it installed last week. While the car "ran" with the mis-timed camshaft, it was very anemic. With the proper timing the engine is now running better than ever! Tim E. has advised that I could swap the "C" cam on the exhaust with the "E" cam on the intake and possibly gain even more high-end punch - and I may yet try that but for now the resulting compromise seems really enjoyable to me. My thanks to all who offered guidance and advice during my rebuild. It looks like this car is good to go for many more years to come. Given the support of this group and the various parts vendors we have access to I would say if I can manage this work almost anyone could - so don't be too intimidated by the prospect if/when trouble comes your way. Retard Timing Question 11
Quick question. I went to tweak my timing, had to loosen the pinch plate again, wound up getting it all out of whack, and now I've gotten myself a little confused. You twist the distributor clockwise to advance and counterclockwise to retard, yes? Or do I have it backwards? -- Toaph (yes the subject line was wryly ambiguous)

Update - Timing Better; carbs okay...? 7
I wanted to give folks here an update. After poring over all the carburetor documentation I could dig up, I finally got a buddy to come over and help me set the timing. It was way off. Waaaaay off. When I got the distributor back in, I had no idea where to position it, and I missed by a pretty wide margin. I advanced it as far as I could with the stud, but it still wasn't enough. I loosened the pinch plate, and based on my previous experience was able to do that without the distributor popping back out again. I advanced it a little too far, and then clamped down the pinch plate so I can pull it back and do the fine adjustment with the stud. It's already running better even than when I got it back from the mechanic. My guess is they actually did do a pretty good job on the carbs, and it was the timing all along that was holding it back. I didn't take it out for a drive because it's raining here and I've got somewhere else to be, but I think I'm on the right track. I'll do a little more fine tuning when the weather and my schedule align, and hopefully I'll get it truly up to snuff. I expect I'll be checking back here on carb tuning, but it will be from a more theoretical, diagnostic, cause/effect perspective after I've done some more book studying. Thanks again to everyone for the help and encouragement, and to those who have given me a hard time here, thank you for the kick in the butt I needed to motivate me to get out of my own way and perform up to my potential. The way things are going, I might actually be able to give this temperamental old classic the care and attention that it needs. -- Toaph

Redline 3
I have a question I’m hoping someone can help with. When I purchased my federal Esprit S2 the original gauges were missing and the owner had supplied some speedhut gauges ( I should also note that it came with dellorto carbs ). I wanted to set the redline indicator on the Tach. Can someone please advise what the redline should be set at? Thanks Murray

Distributor Won't Clamp Down 23
Okay, so I learned the hard way what my mechanic meant when he said that he can't adjust the timing or the distributor will pop out. Please see the quick video linked below. When I first tried to adjust the distributor, it was pretty well stuck, but as soon as I unstuck it, it slipped out and I can't get it secured again. If seems as if I can't push it in all the way, and even if I could it looks like there's too much of a gap in the plate for it to be able to be able to clamp down on it even though I have it as tight as I can get it. I don't know what this is supposed to be like. Any tips appreciated. -- Toaph : Esprit S1 Distributor fit Esprit S1 Distributor fit

Setting the Timing? 9
I am checking the timing on my federal S1, and I need some tutoring. I know how to use a timing light, but I don't have any practical experience with it. The attached image shows where it's currently set. My understanding is that this is about 8 degrees before top dead center (as opposed to 8 degrees AFTER top dead center). My manual says it should be 9 degrees BTDC static and 25 degrees BTDC above 2500RPM. Next time I go out I'll disconnect the vacuum advance and rev it up to see where it goes. At this point I just want to confirm that I'm properly interpreting what I'm seeing, and that I know what I should be looking for. Thanks for any help/advice. -- Toaph

Cam pulley upgrade performance tests 4
Gents, I plan on doing a cam pulley upgrade soon. I think I can just flip the exhaust cam, and I have a C pulley from a JH for the intake, and have 115 MOP for both intake and exhaust. I thought I’d do some before and after performance tests, just to document the improvements. I don’t have a dynamometer or rolling road available to me. I thought I’d try to get an app for my phone to measure 0-60 times, and try to run the tests on similar days. I’ll also record video of engine response, and of course engine noise. Anyone think of anything else that I should record? Bill Virus-free.www.avg.com

Coil for Lumination Magnatronic 3
I’m trying to help someone out with what sounds like an ignition issue. Stumbling and misfire under load, and on hills and acceleration once the car is hot. He has a Lumination Magnatronic, which I know nothing about, but I don’t think it’s magic. Should operate like the Pertronix. He has a Lucas 12 volt coil without internal ballast, and has an external resistor (pink/white wire). It was working fine until he was forced to replace the coil, and possibly didn’t get the correct one. (Old one fried when shorted). I can’t get him to read voltages and let me know what they are. It could be another from the fans kicking on, drawing the 65 amp alternator down that maybe isn’t outputting 65 amps. I had a similar problem in 2008, when my alternator was outputting 40 volts, which was probably cooking the coil. Is this the correct coil? If not, what is the correct coil? I have an opinion, but thought I’d wait to see what you guys say. Bill Virus-free. www.avg.com
