Re: Upgrading points

I've had three Lumenition systems fry, and I'm not a big fan or Pertronix. I wouldn't buy another of either one... just my opinions.

My Favorite was the Crane XR700 (XR3000 is more of the same). Crane sold the product line, and it's now made by FAST (Fuel Air Spark Technology)... but it's the same bullet proof system.

The Pertronix Ignitor installs inside the distributor, where they're out of sight. That also means they get no cooling, which can lead to problems. Especially for the basic Ignitor.

The XR700/ XR3000 amplifiers are in finned aluminum housings, and are mounted outside the distributor. In my Esprit S2, I ran the wiring out of the engine bay, into the rear boot area, and mounted it on the front face of the right wheel arch. Away from all the engine heat.

I used to run a hot coil, and rev the engine high during autocross runs, and nothing I could do would botherthe XR700 amplifier one bit. If I were shopping for another electronic ignition system, it would be either another XR700, or an MSD 6AL. The Esprit's Smiths tach was fine with the XR700, but my Europa's Smiths tach doesn't work with the MSD that's currently installed. The MSD is a great system, but it's not compatible with Smiths tachs. They make a tach adapter, but it's extra cost on top of a system that's already rather expensive.

Fast makes several variations of the XR700. The link is for the one that's meant for Lucas distributors.

Later,
Tim

Thinking about upgrading my 79 S2 Lumenition ignition. Is there a consensus on what to replace it with? Or should I keep it?
