Re: River Raisin B&A tender

I kind of lost track of this topic...? Speaking of short runs though, is this the tender you all are talking about?

Re: Minimum Radius List

Sometimes I love telling banalities. Lay your radii as big as you can afford them. Many years ago I bought a german streamline steamer, a BR 06. Can be seen here: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DR-Baureihe_06. In HO it is a huge monster of an engine. Made by Brawa, it had aprons for the trailing trucks with cut out segments for the trailing trucks to handle small radii. The parts for a more prototypical appearance were added as spare parts. I installed those out of optical reasons - but the loco needed a one-meter-radius from then on. The conclusion? Being a M?rklin AC model the loco and my layout got provided the biggest C track radius M?rklin produced. What also was a benefit for trains with long cars.
In short: The closer your radii are to the real thing the less trouble they shall get you. Some day you come across a Big Boy. Or a Challenger. Or something similar in that lengh. Then you'll curse your decision of using small radii years ago. Again: Check the dimensions you have left for your layout. Think big. And enjoy our beautiful hobby now and in the years to come. No lists needed.

Re: River Raisin B&A tender

I took a look at a couple photos of the B&M's Lima-built P-4 4-6-2's (1934.) Now, I don't have dimensions of the B&A tender to compare with, so I'm only comparing the shape of the top and counting the number of rivet lines, but I'd say it has reasonable chance of being a close match to that slightly later series of locomotives. Certainly, if one models a road with similarly sized Lima built equipment from the era, it might be worth considering Rusty's tender.

Have any Pacific's with ~80" drivers ever been imported?

You are correct it will be installed on a SSL&S frame. The original AF linkage will not be used either. It will be replaced by SSL&S linkage, and new leading and trailing trucks.?

What exactly is going on here with these two boilers?
?
At first I thought?an AF boiler was being cleaned up to be detailed with free standing piping, but then I noticed that the one boiler has much of?the below walkway cast details removed... thus that boiler can no longer use AF's method of hanging the AF valving. So, it must be going onto an entirelly different (non-AF) frame?

Minimum Radius List

Has anyone compiled a list of the required minimum track radius that a particular locomotive must have? For instance an American models Pacific vs an AF/converted SSL&S Pacific? Seems like this would be good information to have before laying track.

Re: AF to scale - SSL&S Hudsons - B&A RRM tenders

Mike,?

? ? ?I have one of Claude's SSL&S Hudson conversions. Will take an inventory of the parts and send it to you over the next few days.? The key, at least in my opinion, is the time spent filing the boiler.? I recall reading years ago that he produced upwards of 150 of these kits.??

? ? ?On the subject of B&A tenders, I stumbled across a photo in Mopac Power, written by, as you well know, the late Joe Colias, patron saint of all things Missouri Pacific.? In the chapter on Mikes, there's a tender that appears to be virtually identical to Rusty's RRM tender, on Commonwealth 4-wheel passenger trucks, being pulled by an Alco-built 2-8-2.? I suspect the design was far more common than we realize.? I then consulted my file of MP Mike photos.? Yep, numerous MoPac Mike's were paired with a very similar tender.??

AF to scale

Question, I was asked if I had what it would take to convert AF Hudsons and Northerns to scale. I know that SSL&S once offered these conversions. So asking for a friend whom I don't believe is on this group. Does anyone have one of these kit for sale that I can put him in contact with? I am not doing the work, I am just helping him find parts.?
?
I have never seen one of these and don't know what they consist of. I do have one of those AF Consolidation conversion kits that I scrounged parts from. The drivers are under my Berkshire.? It came with the AF boiler but pretty much everything else was SSL&S details including the tender kit.?

Re: Finally Finished

I had a chance to take a close look at one of these Mike's, with the intention of converting it to scale. It's a beautiful model. I see that the two center axles have blind tires. Only the 1st and 4th drivers need to be replaced or turned.
A scale "conversion kit" would only need 4 tender axles, a lead and a trailing truck axle, 4 tires, and 2 adaptors for mounting scale couplers.
The only problem I have with all this is the cost of the previously owned locos.? It might be more affordable to buy a used Overland?
Tommy?

HI Steve,
Sweet! Now that is a looker!!
Some day the MP is going to have a green boiler on my line. As I just love that paint scheme. Before I get be up for it. I already check with the MPH and no MP did not have a green boiler loco.
?
Inquiring minds would like to know, did you turn the tires to scale or did you purchase them and turn the centers to fit the new centers?
