Re: Finescale wheelsets resource question

Hello Felix
I have some available out here in our "good old" European Union....
Will cost you way .... less than having them shipped from Los Gatos CA...
below pic of what I have.
Note all are 36", pointed axle, weathered, and most are Proto64 (ie XS flanges for top realism, but need proper track code for smooth operations)

Re: Tomalco

Well, as I stated on Facebook, the sale is not final, yet. The paperwork is in the works but NO, Tomalco Track IS NOT YET owned by Micro Engineering. So please stop sharing news that you are not 100% certain of.

I would buy Code 83 as I already have 50 sections of Code 83.? 20 I bought from Larry and 30 I bought from Shane.

SMMW ribbed boxcar-update

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I've made a moderate bit of progress on the MILW boxcar kit--not in a big rush here! But I have to mention one failure? ...four eye rings are included to help with the roof laterals.? Bent brass wire and with the eye ring form that corner grab.? Those eye rings IMHO are too fragile to survive long or even be durable during construction.. So that attempt has been scratched.? Someplace I once had some formed brass lift rings, that I can't find, so I finally chose door #3 and have resorted to some old NE eyepins--they'll work.? That hopefully will happen this evening!?

Since these are brass/copper I should be able to use solder to create a little bead, letting the corners have a bit of a finished final.?

John et al.,

Pardon me for chiming in, but both the BL-2 in the foreground and the F Unit behind it were painted for Bert by me in 2005.? I also did a series of passenger cars and an E8 set for him.? A good guy.? We were both C&O fans.
?
I used to do custom painting for folks, but when Floquil quit making their paints, I also quit.? It was fun while it lasted, but it wasn't exactly a very lucrative endeavor.?

Felix,

?

What brand of trucks are they? American Models wheelsets will not fit in S Helper or Pacific Rail Shops trucks. You need the correct Northwest Short Line wheelsets or S Helper Service. Part of the fun of S scale is the hunt for compatible wheels and track!

Subject: [S-Scale] Finescale wheelsets resource question

?

Hi all,

?

S scale looks fun. After 15y experience with modelling OO gauge to a British prototype, I dabbed my toes into S scale and spend the last 3 month importing some stock for a planned oyster cannery themed exhibition layout.

Both OO/4mm and S?scales are quite obscure here in Germany. They are both bigger than H0 but smaller than O scale, but still worlds apart either.

Attached is a quick photo of my stock on a board that is meant to be turned into a OO gauge layout this year. It is 12" wide, and as I still need to get a feeling for the scale I got the impression that I should go for 16" width for S scale.

?

However, some of these cars I bought second hand have hi-rail wheelsets. Where can I get replacement scale wheelsets from?

?

The AF car needs new trucks too. Suggestions welcome.

?

Best,

Felix Moehring

Hello Ed
I see quite a few listed on eBay.
May or may not your favorite source?!?!
Rarely any Hi Rail!!!!
So scale is favored!!!
You might put my name somewhere for when the Hi Rail Wheelsets are removed from the cars?
Not sure if I want to pay $12 per car though?!?!

Hello Felixx.......Regarding scale wheelsets, I have quite a few surplus to my needs.? They are NWSL scale wheelsets which can replace the hi-rail wheelsets on most freight cars.? My price is $3 per axle + postage with immediate delivery compared to buying them direct from NWSL for $4 per axle plus a few weeks waiting time for to actually make them.? Mine are brand new and unused.? See photos below.? Dimensional details are available on the NWSL web site.??

Re: Any future S efforts....

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I think "if we're talking about the future" as the title indicates--it's all the super toys or just buy HO that already is running OOB--out of box!?

When the SHS F units arrived, I popped in the soundboards (mine were test boards that had been in Dallas before I received them).? Just a couple of adjustments had me running.? Now I did some traditional non-sound and maybe a couple of sound decoders earlier, but it sure was nice to just remove that shorting plug and plug in, blow the horn at the crossing--never to turn back.?

Now after a dozen + years I've added sound boards to a couple of older units, but I'm not in a hurry either.?
Since I'm nearly as old as dirt, I can't image anybody younger trying to re-invent the wheel at this point.? If they go further, they'll fight over a newer decoder generation, types of speakers and then ditch lights etc.? If they finally get to a semi complete layout you can operate, a few engines, and a few years of pleasure actually operating.? If you like to tear into stuff--have at it, but don't expect too many to ask for a SSL&S kit either--let Mike do that.?

I'd like to witness, a couple of SD's (newer than what I have) pulling some well weathered freight cars thundering along the rails into the sunset!? Those units could be sold specifically with unique add-on appliances (after all we have to keep our hands still doing some detail work).

Lionel finally committed to DCC compatibility for the high end Legacy S stuff in 2012.? We see how well that worked out.? MTH forced their DCS (with DCC compatibility) upon S and then left the building.
?
Simple may be better.? Leave it to the individual.? That's how AM is doing it.

Re: Any future S efforts....

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Jeff, I do appreciate your pioneer attitude, as you well know, our families have a lot in common, but I don't think we will ever go back to the simple engines.? Rex engines with a single wire, or Nord/Midgage/Nimco/SSLS with enough interest or sales to make a nickel for the manufacturer.?
For one who has gone from the usual AC powered AF unit's to DC with diodes, to PFM sound, then to Dynatrol, then DCC then sound then this, then that--I don't want to chase technology either, but in the greater world you gotta sell with all the extras now.? The new entrants and the demand for more technology has changed nearly everything.?

I bought a little Jeep with a medium $ up-grade from my Daughter (moved to UK) but this guy, is instruction manual deficient, I'm still finding things I didn't know--a grabbed the steering wheel in a new way and changed the radio station!? If you have a really newish Iphone it will connect--but mine is getting old, so no go!?

We've been having several days of very spring like weather, so I'll sit outside with my coffee and listen to my Latino neighbors who have a few chickens= eggs!? With that being said, I'm running out to BK for some breakfast--after I run to the bank for a loan for the eggs!?

Bob Werre
PhotoTraxx

Well since everything is a preorder nowadays anyway it seems Lionel could open it up for preorders stating that the project will only go forward if ¡°X¡± number of locomotives are ordered and then if enough interest is reached require a 50% deposit from those people to assure the sales and make the run.?

My only gripe is that I don¡¯t want or need all the junk they have in those locomotives. They could save money by selling a stripped version rid of all the electronics and simply supply it with scale wheels, lights and motor. We¡¯re S scalers, so we can do the rest!!! If they want to release with hirail wheels for those folks that would be fine to increase the run numbers, but offering a stripped version saving some money would be great. That¡¯s basically what American Models sells with their DC versions. I ended up stripping those down too and starting over anyway. I suppose if they wanted to make it DCC ready that would be fine too with the harness built in and then purchasers could choose their own control system.?

Just my two cents.?
