Bill, this was done in the 60’s by Walter Graeff of Ace Model Railroad. He agreed to purchase a “Days” run of the injection molding machine, which I think Josh Seltzer told me was 5,000 units. The AF boxcar (PRR X29) with non-opening doors and the 3 bay offset open top hopper were run. Ace then sold these unlettered shells or as kits. Seltzers purchased over a 1,000 of these shells and using Champ decals, CDS dry transfers, and any other letting they could cobble, offered RTR scale and AF compatible cards. They included assembled Ace trucks, bolsters or underframes. AF compatible couplers (I’m thinking Harry Gordon’s) or KD#5s. Josh told me the project manager had not cleared this deal with the higher ups and lost his job over it….

To" section there is also a dedicated page for "kit-bashing":
Sometimes I just get a photo, and sometimes I get multiple photos and
texts. If I get more of a how-to article's worth of content, I'll make a
dedicated page. If it is just a photo or two of the completed model with
a caption, then I'll add it to the "various" pages, as an additional
example. That section may also contain links to external web sites, if
the author has captured a kit-bashing project on their own web site.

I would bet that the molds/tooling?for the pieces under discussion reside in China. It’s possible that Lionel doesn’t even “own” them, or that they were destroyed after the last run, although not highly probable.
A more likely approach for us would be using CAD-CAM and 3D printing to make very short run or make-on-demand models. The results would not be cheap, probably brass-model prices, but could fill the needs of existing and future S scalers (after 50 years I expect the idea of “growing” S into a major scale is one to forget). People are already making the 3D printed shells, it is more about machining the mechanism parts.
A first step might be to work with AM to design 3D printed shells and maybe frame parts to extend their line (if they are willing - but it?would mean they could focus on marketing and shipping, maybe painting and pad-printing an extended line with only mechanical parts being in inventory).?The line could then be filled out with newer models and more unusual units from the transition era.
Meanwhile someone with the skills could work on producing a mechanism or mechanisms using?the CAM technology.
BTW, Hans, any HO produced since the 1970s should run on code 70. Before that it was only a few European based companies that used the NEM standards which required code 100 track.

It's a wonderful portal for all who are interested in trains, farm modeling, diecast vehicles, etc. Your "news" and "product gallery" are especially comprehensive, capturing part-time makers, 3D-printed models, and many obscure niches with our hobby.

I changed my S Fine Scale Model Railroading group to private maybe 2 years ago. There was a lot of SPAM and fake profiles applying. Changing to private stopped all that. ? I mostly post things to both to cover all possible. But FB allows video to be posted that I/O SHOULD be doing so I am a bit more active on FB. ? Thank You,

Thank you, Dan., I calculated that the train would be over 8 feet long! I’m searching for a place to fit it in full view. It would have to be a “helicopter” shot. Before that, I need to strip and add details to my two C&NW F units before painting them in red and gray. Might take some time at my current snail’s pace. Roger ?

I do hope all the deck chairs have been
lined up correctly for all the ACs.? I can just see it now, an AC
is about to attack the Western slopes of the Sierra with it's
consist ending with a proper caboose.? With all the SP modelers in
mind, the BBB still has one painted model of the sloped coupla
wood caboose.? This is the Gold Coast model of the C-30-1 that has
been custom painted but not lettered.? It does have a pair of
lanterns and it includes several packages of Champ HO decals,
although I suspect the the correct size is now available.? It's in
the factory box with a gold label.? It's never been run with
excellent paint.?
Probably the last model around!?

of the responses interesting. I believe it's important to
remember where the works of art from our early and very talented
S scale modelers went/are. Not just Jesse, either.? It's Worth a
page or two on the NASG website.? We both?know who sent me the
AC-5 and I remain most appreciative.? It took a lot of effort to
get it back to running plus up to date with Dan's brass
castings.? There's probably?a good story as to how Arden ended
up with those models.? He once told me the family wanted to keep
them.? Also, I wonder who the guy is with the podcast (you tube)
showing the Yellowstone and unpainted brass
