Re: Unique Southern Pacific AC-5 Cab Forward 4-8-8-2 for sale

Bob,
Would this tender be appropriate behind his AC? We have one for sale at the museum. Can anyone tell us the original RRM price?

Got my Nimco K5 conversion kit? at 2017 S Fest. Maybe advertise in the Dispatch. Post on some of the AF groups?
Maybe get separate items, drivers, wheels, DC can motor when you can? sometimes guys start projects and don't finish them.
Just some random thoughts from a guy in S Scale since 1957.

I attend train shows at York, Timonium and Allentown twice a year.? I have not seen any Nimco chassis kits in decades.? And Bill Lane's review of Springfield said no scale S.
My intention was to see what members here could offer.? If these kits are not here, then they are either hidden in unknown collections or in a dumpster.

I'll look around the museum later this week. I'm pretty sure there's a 300? Atlantic conversion with brass spoked drivers (SSLS?) available.?

David...

According to Lee Johnson,?his?AC-5 was the?only cab-forward Jesse?built for others.? I have no doubt that yours is a Bennett-built model, however.? It may have been for his layout. It's a bit of?a mystery as to what his kids did with his models when they tore out the layout.? Your AC model may?have been the one he built for?himself.? I'd need to see more photos of it, but the model could?be anything from an AC-6 to AC-12.? No matter what, the number is incorrect, as I noted before.? Hope this helps.

Re: Converting an AF Royal Blue to scale

John
Nixon (Nimco) made conversion kits for Flyer engines in the 50s. S scale Loco also made some as I remember. These occasionally show up at shows and on eBay.

That's odd.? I had no problems with fixed pilots on my SD70 and ES44 (I secured the pilots) and 33" radius on my old layout.

Re: It's Official: No More Flyer

First of all,? I love my AF SD70Ace and ES44 units.? ?The SD70 was retrofitted with scale wheels and couplers mounted to the body.? Additionally it was converted to DCC.? ?This process rendered the ditch light function berserk.? It also threw every car attached to the loco off the rails on my 54" curves.? So, as a result I have to foist it on Bill's layout to enjoy its true potential.
The ES44 was similarly retrofitted with scale wheels and couplers but I kept the couplers mounted to the pivoting pilots.? It is also still factory AC.? It performs flawlessly.

The death of American Flyer is a devastating development for us all who love S scale.

Or was that a feature on one of the other AF modern diesels?
The SD70 was the only Flyer locomotive to have a factory fixed pilot option.? As I recall, it secures the pilot to the frame and not the body.? It is possible to secure the ES44's pilot from moving to the frame with a little drilling and tapping.? (Pictures below.)? Mounting to the body would require more work.

Springfield Train Show

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This is my little review of the Springfield train show....

There was little S "Scale" you had to look for it. Only 1 piece of S brass I saw a Sn3 caboose. I bought NO trains ¨C only a very expensive Chili Dog and soda.

?

As if the news about Lionel ending all American Flyer production was not bad enough my conversation with Shane Wilson of ScaleTrains was not much better. They have no plans on making anything brand new in S Scale for the known future. But in reality given new projects have a 3 year lead time - do the math for me at almost 63.... I have no plans on buying any of their reefers I already had 75 from various manufacturers.

?

I think other manufacturers like Atlas should be contacted to see how receptive they may be. Also there was a number of high quality HO cars there made by very small companies (2 people) I am going to contact 1 I saw maybe they are hungry for growth.

?

The best news I heard was from Matt Gaudynski of Des Plaines/Fox Valley. A number of known long dormant projects have had progress recently and?may?be seen in some form at the NASG convention. The code 137 track and turnouts should be back in stock by spring.

?

Code 100 rail is not a priority for Micro Engineering. They sell almost none in HO. They were out of stock of code 100 rail. That has been corrected an order has been placed this week but rail has a long lead time.

?

It was great hanging out with the Dwiggens family. They are great genuine people working in a family run business. Dan and I had dinner with them after the show.

?

And¡ my wedding crew was together at the show however briefly for the 2nd time since 2002. All are friends of mine for 30+ years.

?

Thank You,
Bill Lane
