This is great! I’ve been waiting a long time for a non-brass version of this ACF hopper. This right here is probably “the future of S”, individuals using the tech available to make things for other modelers. Pieter Roos On Thursday, April 17, 2025, 12:18 AM, Mike Fyten <mike@...> wrote:

A long time ago on the prairie
I occasionally tune into a historical IO type group regarding South Dakota--home grounds here!? Occasionally I'll come across some decent RR photos and writings about them.? Last night a letter from a past lobbyist for the CNW was run.? The State Capitol was in Yankton in the far SE corner of the state--MILW territory!
The CNW was pushing for a more central part of the state and right next to their new rails!? So the CNW pushed for Pierre (pronounced pier).? They brought in a train stocked with food, booze and women; and so the legislators decided the move would be good!? Apparently lobbying hasn't changed too much! BTW, The main passenger train ended up being called the Dakota 400!? My own version is called the Dakota 300! (an E7 one coach, RPO & baggage.? Presently I'm waiting for some cash coming my way!? Perhaps I should open a prison there too! Not too political is it? Bob Werre Phototraxx |

I had bought the Hudson conversion kit
and did a few inroads but I wasn't ready for the full trip yet.? I
did a fair amount of work on the tender trucks (the kind where the

ACF 70 Ton Hopper
开云体育
Well, Guys,
Sorry for taking so long, but after months of tweaking, the ACF 70
Ton Hopper is finally at a point, that I feel comfortable this model will go together as planned. I tried painting it as a built-up model,?
but there were too many nooks and crannies that you could not get paint into. Therefore, I’m offering it up as a 3D resin kit, (trucks?
and couplers are not included). The cost is $75.00 each?and includes free shipping to the lower 48 states only. Please contact me,?
off this list, mike@..., if you are interested.

Re: Who done it?
开云体育Is that a Berkshire? John Bortz built and ran Berkshires including his large scale live steam loco. Maybe have been built and/or owned by John Bortz. ? Thank You, ? See my layout progress at:

Re: Minimum Radius List
Yes, with the coupled wheelbase and the total sideplay, you can calculate the allowable radius.? It is just geometry, if any of us still remember.
Regarding the AM Northern, haven't some members here tested them for their minimum radius?
The NMRA can recommend.? Put an engine on the track and see what it can or cannot do.? That is the real recommendation. |
Re: Who done it?
开云体育Back when the loco was still being
developed Claude put together a Circuit Letter for those who would
be building one. I don't recall how long the process took but I
bet it was a couple of years. ? It was a great idea to keep the
guys from around the country working on a single engine.? Sharing
and debating construction methods was the idea.?

While I wasn't in S scale when SSL&S was flourishing, my reading of documents suggests the first project for the idea was supposed to be a Lima Berkshire, so presumably this is one.? As to who put it together, I'd have no idea.

Can someone ID this loco, and tell us the builder? It appears to be mostly a SSLS build, with a lot of embellishments. It's a beautiful job.

I like it. After all, the Importers have a plate from their builders, usually on loco and tender frames. Tommy? On Wed, Apr 16, 2025, 4:43?PM Mike Swederska via <mikesscale=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育I can not but you have touched on a subject that I have been thinking hard about. And that is an etched plate for the bottom of my builds with a “Built by Mike Swederska”. Just for this reason.?Mike Swederska? On Apr 16, 2025, at 4:26?PM, Tom Lennon via groups.io <milepost169@...> wrote:

Re: Minimum Radius List
开云体育From:?robf06 I wrote the following in 1996 for the Bay Area S Scalers module project. The NMRA recommendation was based on the rigid wheelbase, as I recall, while ignoring pilot and trailing trucks and low-hanging appliances. ? For my home layout I settled on a 43-inch radius to operate an SP Class GS-4 4-8-4 “Daylight”.

Re: River Raisin B&A tender
The tender on the H7 is the one I have been talking about. The P&E tender on the K14 has horizontal rivet patterns, not the 13 vertical rows of the other tender.?
?
Something to keep in mind is matching the tender floor height to the cab's deck, especially when moving up or down in driver diameter.?
