what did the MP use them for?

I ask because many were used for cement service, for which they would have been used on home rails or not far from them, due to the cement typically being a local commodity, not shipped far.??

I am interested in shipments that would have been of higher value than cement.?

Before deciding on a switching layout plan I suggest that there are some questions to be first asked; especially:
- Big city vs small town, or something in between
- What part of the country;? ?My observation is that most switching layout plans don't resemble real situations that I commonly see; namely tracks to be switched are laid out parallel to the mainline, vs most switching layouts the tracks run off at odd angles from the mainline; maybe this is common in some parts of the country???? Certainly does not resemble central USA.? ?

Agree.? That should be fine even for a lot of machining work.? Using granite cutoffs, especially sink cutouts, is certainly mentioned in amateur machining circles.

Granite cutting boards and pastry boards (kitchen items) are another alternative.

Actual small surface plates can be purchased surprisingly inexpensively (probably from China) and have a guaranteed (supposedly) flatness.? But your sample piece is really at a good price point.

I already have my pair of SMMW 70T kits (albeit from the first run with modified Athearn drive), so I am not a potential customer for more, but I'd say this was a good price, particularly with the pair of Stantons.
I can't think of any prototype 70-tonners used in Minnesota; closest might have been the FtDDM&S or SCT?? I have the owners manual for one of the SCT units.

While not railroad specific, I have had good luck with . ?They have several colors that work for boxcar reds, such as MMP-014 Red Oxide and MMP-015 Rotbraun. Their MMP-014 Panzergrey is a great replacement for Floquil Grimy Black.

You are probably going to get a lot of opinions, and it seems most brands and most methods of thinning, and most air brush needle sizes seem to work fine for somebody, and such and such air pressure is best, etc.

I suggest picking a brand that has a color selection you really like and start experimenting.

One thing that I really DO suggest is to use a commercial thinner.? Not just distilled water as recommended by some.? And not with any alcohol for thinning (there is a risk of spotting).? Of course, this or that person will swear by distilled water and/or adding a little rubbing alcohol.? Commercial thinners tend to have other things (same goes for VOC thinner) that help with drying time and such.? It seems that the Tamiya Acrylic X-20A Thinner has good comments out there.

My personal experience with water-based paints has been one of annoyance.? I found it to be too much trouble to prevent sputtering and such.? Perhaps I didn't try hard enough.? I very much prefer VOC paint (I like Tru-Color paints) but I have a good spray booth.

So, on this list, and/or other searching, you are not likely to find "this is definitely the one and only best way."? I suggest spending some time on research, but not a lot, and instead spend time on practice painting some old disposable cars or building sides or something.

Former auto body shop owner, and only uses water based paint.

Yes... by "IM" I do mean Inventive Models.? Once they have another run of the couplers done, the ebay ad will populate with the couplers that have become available.

As for a magnet... I assume you mean an uncoupling magnet?? I use the magnetic 'rod' that was once available from Sergent Engineering.. but just about any old similar magnet should work.? I would be surprised if the eBay item number 387719256923 wouldn't work.? Do an ebay search for that item number.? Or look for it locally; just about any old auto parts store should carry such an item.

When I started my DCC trip, there was a widely known retailer --Loy Spurluck who ran Loy's Toys.? for a couple of bucks he'd send out a series of newsletters, as pretty much the entire industry was just getting started.? Eventually he was sort of the master of DCC and Digitrax at the time.? He moved from California to the wilds of Arkansas and set up shop there.? He also once held a 'school'--"students" traveled (probably camped), but they experienced DCC with others around in a workshop situation.?
I could see that being applied to Engine Building in Brass 101!? Being held over a three day weekend for a hand-full of those 'highly motivated' .? Mike could conduct that class and collect a few dollars!? Graduation would be a Ops session on his layout!
