Stan Stokrocki's Layout Photos

Group,

Some of you had problems downloading and/or viewing the content of Bill Lane's .zip file of photos and videos he took while visiting Stan's layout recently.

As part of yesterday's update of the NASG web site, those photos are now on the web site. I've grouped them in a manner that one would see if one were visiting the layout in person (I try to do that with all layout photos).

For some bizarre reason, I cannot get Bill's videos (which are excellent) to play in the web browsers I have tested them in (they don't recognize the file formats, while they are just mp4 files). We have no idea why that is happening, as there are 6 other layouts on the web site that have one or more videos embedded in their pages, at least one of which (Mike Berus') uses videos that Bill took. I'll continue to look into a solution for this issue.

You can find the link by going to the NASG web site:

where the home page is one of the photos of Stan's layout, and then clicking on the link in the photo description on the Welcome page.

- Peter.

For those who missed the link to Austin's video visit to American Models, it was in the opening post in this thread.? Here it is again: ?

Interesting that the fellow (Corbin, I think) assembling diesel chassis - had parts of two Rex steam locomotives on his work table...

An AM chassis runs super while keeping a straightforward mechanical approach to design and assembly.? Having experience in various scales it is refreshing to be able to take apart, strip down a mechanism and tune it up without an instruction book.? Many imported and foreign built locomotives are so complex that they can't easily be disassembled.? AM diesels seem to run just about forever, and replacement parts are easily available.? I've gone from complex DCC and extremely complex layout wiring back to simple DC so I can concentrate on the joy of building and detailing models.? American Models does support this.? Now if we could just get some locos and rolling stock based on 80's - 90's and current prototype we would have it made.

Re: Featuring American Models

As of now, Austin's video has received more than 4.1K views. His YouTube channel has 3.86K subscribers, which is considerably more than the the number of folks on this list. If even a small proportion of his viewers purchases a locomotive or other rolling stock from AM, then Austin has helped the future of this scale.?

Re: Featuring American Models

I thought it was a good video but it needs to get shared with more general model railroad sites, not just S Scale if we want to promote the scale. I did share it to the 'Budget Model Railroad' FB group and it got quite a few hits.? The general perception out there is that S has disappeared except for a few brave souls who lay their own track and machine their own wheels or collect American Flyer.

Re: Featuring American Models

Approximately 16 minutes into the video, Karen talks about an upcoming project - S Transfer Station - to be announced at S-Fest in STL (back in October). If you'd like to find out more, visit ?

Re: Featuring American Models

I'm with Charles -- let's not nit-pick the technical qualities of someone's attempt to promote our hobby and our scale.? The video wasn't put together by a commercial production crew, so we shouldn't make such comparisons.? There have been prior threads on this list encouraging each other to share videos of our modeling, and Austin has taken that a step farther with a very interesting visit to our most key manufacturer.
?
It's my understanding that Austin Birkey has recently joined the NASG, although he has had a longtime social media presence promoting S.? While he is most passionate about AF, his visit to American Models shows an openness to the other facets of S too.? So let's welcome him to the NASG and to this list.??
?
Austin, I know you've been interacting with Brooks Stover, and I hope you'll share a little more with us about your background and interests.? And through your participation on this scale-oriented list, maybe we can influence you to transition to scale modeling, as so many of us have done in the past.

Re: Featuring American Models

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Rich,? you certainly got that production correct--the first thing that bothered me was the keys in the half-open door.? I kept wondering what was behind that door.? Funny how little things can make all the difference.? Of course, a bigger thing was the roughness in the scenes, like if I was selling anything put in some spit and polish, the best you can.?

I spent the better part of my life trying to clean up the scenes that nobody saw until it was too late!? Big things, over the years were printed brown cardboard boxes (often Royal Crown) that were perched on top of computer stations!? Then we went through the girlie posters on the factory floor, and then the six-pack fireman a couple of years later!?
I once had a old time die cutter threaten to quit--He didn't want to be in the shot showing the skilled knowledgeable cutter.? So he picked his assistant who looked like he came from cleaning the gutter (apology to those who do that).? I could see it not working in a capabilities brochure.? So I selected a 60ish worker who I could be cast as a watchmaker--knowledgeable & experienced.? So the die-cutter threw a fit!? I then told him--the survival of the company depended on how things looked--a couple of the foremen understood and he finally agreed!? Then I had a time when T shirts on the factory floor and on drilling rigs either had Budweiser or ZZ Top on them.? I gave them the choice of expensive retouching or having Shell Oil not using the shot or costly re-shooting!? One of my clients ordered a bunch of coveralls with the latest company logos on them so they looked professional.? Old logos and faded coveralls caused problems.
All these things are important, just like a dragging wheel-set on that new boxcar!

Re: Engines for Christmas -- Part II

I'm not sure what these sold for originally but I'd love to have this to paint for the CNW. The problem is my budget is only about $200 which I'm sure is not going to buy this I one. But I have to try ...
