W3DJS Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Image v2.0 Released

Fellow Hams and Raspberry Pi Enthusiasts,

I am pleased to announce the release of version 2 of the Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Image I've been working on. It contains extensive amount of pre-compiled, pre-installed ham radio software. (See below for an extensive program listing.)

The image will require a 32GB or larger SD or micro SD card to install. This image uses the default password for "pi" which is "raspberry". Please change it upon first launch, as the SSH server is enabled and this would be a security risk.

One more caveat: This image comes pre-installed to operate as a wireless Hotspot for field operations. If you are using this at home, and don't want to operate as a Hotspot, then open a Terminal on the Pi and type in "KillHotspot" (without the quotes) and hit return. Networking will then operate normally.

If there is too much pushback on this point, I may remove the auto-hotspot capability in a future release of the image.

I have confirmed this image starts up successfully on the Raspberry Pi Model 2 B and Model 4 B. However, some of the applications require more CPU power than the Model 2 or 3 can provide, so YMMV.

You can download it from: either??or
?. Thanks to fellow Hams Dave Bruse and Norm Schklar for hosting the image on their servers.

This is QSL-Ware. If you download and use it, I request you send me a QSL card. (My QRZ page has my current mailing?address.)

Please send me any comments or concerns here so everyone can benefit from the questions and answers.

Outstanding Dave! I noticed it is a 17GB download. Anyway to downsize it a bit more? Did you build on the full Raspbian or the desktop only?

Anyone get this to work on a RPI4 yet?

I've had no luck on the Pi4, either.? it doesn't boot.
I've written the image directly using dd,? and with balena etcher.

Out of curiosity, did you automate the build some sort of way, or is it all manual?

And would you mind if someone put it up as a Torrent?

Could you possibly list some use cases for the hotspot feature???

I use the hotspot feature on my own pi.

When on the home network, it connects to the wifi, and I use it as a typical computer in the ham shack.

When I take it on the go, it provides a hotspot so that I can continue using it via a laptop, tablet, or phone via VNC.

If you're "out in the field" like on Field Day, you may want to make a connection to your Raspberry Pi through a network, like you would at home, to SSH login, or VNC, or something like that.? Setting up a hot spot would allow you to do that.

Outstanding Dave! I noticed it is a 17GB download. Anyway to downsize it a bit more? Did you build on the full Raspbian or the desktop only?
Hi Jason,

Love your YouTube channel. I'm one of your Patreons. Yes, it is a huge download. We're putting it up on BitTorrent to help. I will downsize the next version I produce. This is based on Raspbian Buster with Desktop and recommended software.

Walter,

I created this image on a Raspberry Pi 4. How large is the image you downloaded (exact bytes please)? What software did you use to flash the image to your micro SD card? What happens during boot??

Chuck,

We are in the process of seeding a bittorrent right now. Please stay tuned.

Jeff,

I created the image on a Raspberry Pi 4. I know it works there. Then I took the exact file I uploaded and wrote it to a SD card and successfully booted on a Raspberry Pi 2 B.

How large is the image you downloaded (exact bytes please)? What software did you use to flash the image to your micro SD card? What do you observe when this fails to boot?

There are now two reports of failing to start on a Pi 4. I will investigate further.

Peter,

This was a manual creation, however I think I may use a build automation tool such as Ansible to create the next version. (This will take a good while because creating Ansible playbooks is a slow process sometimes...)

We are putting up a torrent as I write this... I will post the torrent file for download.

Doug,

We're in the process of seeding a bittorrent. In my wildest dreams I never thought this would go viral. So far the webservers have served up over 8.5 Terabytes of W3DJS Raspberry Pi Ham Radio Image 2.0.

I wrote the image using Balena Etcher (on OSX) to a 32g sandisk.? That didn't boot.
I then wrote the image using dd on linux, to a *different* 32g sandisk.? That also didn't boot.

They symptom:

When I power the Pi4 (4g, btw) up, I see the row of raspberries,? then the screen goes blank and nothing else.? No boot messages, no linux device probing, no kernel messages, no panic, etc.

Dave,

I've embarked on a similar project.. using ansible.? I'd be happy to either contribute, or add you to my project.

The goal, is to have ansible do the install (preferably, by me creating and hosting .deb packages) and have a single file that users edit..? ?which then goes and configures all of the other software such as pat winlink, and such.

email me privately if I can either help,? or add you to my project? ?jeff@...
